I was just wondering if it's gotten any better? I ordered the phone today hopefully it should be here this week from www.plemix.com. Or should i cancel my order? Thanks in advance.

this post hurt my head. why did you spend 650+ on a phone that you think is bad? they are calling this phone the smart phone of all smart phones? yea, it might have a few early clitches, but nothing a firmware update or two wont fix.

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonP990i/R100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Symbian OS; 306) Opera 8.60 [en])

it is a great phone with all its potentials but also spoilted by teething problem. if you has not purchase the phone or can cancel the order, it may be better to wait.

who knows SE may do a P910 over P900 again and launch a better uiq 3 phone soon

Maybe ur right...

800 + 100 = 900 (aka MAJOR upgrade)
900 + 10 = 910 (aka MINOR upgrade)
910 + 80 = 990 (aka DOWNPAYMENT of MAJOR upgrade)
990 + 10 = 1000 (aka MINOR upgrade)

A P1000 would make perfect sense in terms of model numbers. Probably sharing the form-factor of the P990, with maybe something different done to the flap only, again? But of course, with better software.

I don't think it'll happen this year though.

heard that P910 was released 9 months after P900. bascially a sterioded P900, added stability and face lift.

It's an excellent Smart Phone. Sure, its got a few early glitches but, as of day 2, they don't seem to be as bad as say the problems that the Treo 650 had when it was new. Or even as bad as the early P900 problems.

None of the glitches that I have come across, so far, are show-stoppers.

My feeling right now is that, for me, it was a good purchase.

Comparing with my Treo 650, I like the 990's:
- inbult apps are usuable (650 had to use a lot of 3rd party)
- camera is good
- sound quality is better
- WiFi is wonderful
- screen is readable
- fast dial is great
- jog wheel is handy
- writing recognition and word completion is fast and very useful

My few dislikes (compared with 650) are:
- need to use the stylus more often
- no Mac OS X sync (probably coming soon)
- no eReader app (probably coming later)
- look forward to firmware upgrade to fix some of the glitches.

Regards
Peter

Yes, I have just today switched to MobiPocket. I used MobiPocket a couple of years ago when I had a P900 for a while.

But I found that the range of available books was somewhat less than in the eReader format. Maybe that has changed now.

Also, how do you get a good font for MobiPocket? The standard download only includes one font and its a bit raggedy.

Peter

I bought it for the 3G which does work like a charm. The WiFi is nice too. There are some improvements in the interface. The camera is greatly improved. The thumboard is much better. It's basically a good phone but there are three problems:

1. Instability. The software is still very buggy -- frequent crashes and hangs. It seems to me that it is even less stable than the original P800. Poor memory management seems to be behind much of the instability (just like the P800 problems), and there isn't really enough of it for the bigger operating system at only 64 megs, just like the P910. The handwriting recognition, for some reason, works much worse even than the P800.

2. A number of weird functional things which seem to be the result of the op system being not fully developed.

3. Much worse battery life with higher power consumption in 3G mode and a smaller battery. Hard to understand why SE put in a smaller battery.

My recommendation: Stick to the P910 so far unless you need 3G or WiFi or the upgraded camera or you are a heavy thumboard user. The P910 is rock solid stable.

By the way -- the P990 has a business card scanner -- a little gimmick but truly useful -- works like a charm and i use it all the time.

Guys, you must read this discussion before even consider buying p990i. Even SE Representative had responded for this discussion.

Its wise to continue with your P910i until SE fixes the major problems.

I just switched to a Cing 8525 (HTC Hermes). The p990i's just not business ready. I'm using this as a replacement for a Blackberry, and I can't really have it spontaneously rebooting, missing e-mails, bugs with the calendar, etc. All the stuff without which I might as well have a w810 or something (just a phone).

If you don't make a lot of demands on the unit, it's great. I've owned p800, p910a, etc. and loved 'em all.

Until SE releases some FW fixes for the memory issues (which I think is causing alot of the other problems), I can't 100% rely on it - I don't need my boss telling me to go back to my crappy-arse blackberry.

It's a shame. I'm in quite a bit of hot water with the spouse over it since I got the p990i just a few months ago...

take care,
paul

hehe....teething problems. I like that.
That being said, I just hope that they don't wait TOO long before the phone stops drooling. =)~

There's only ONE thing I'd REALLY like for SE to fix. My phone stops taking calls every so often. And it's becoming more and more frequent! ARGH!

The P910 seems to be alot better in my oponion as a few of my friends have 990's and they never seem to stop complaining and the lack of the 5 way jog dial control is not good either. My 910 gever gives me any problems it is the perfect phone I think that the 990 is like what the 900 used to be in the early days, it would not surprise me if SE was to come out with a p1000i or something like that in the very near future. Bottom line "don't waste your $$$ on a 990".

I personally never used a P990, but I had a P910a, It was awesome, Loved it, only thing was that software choice for the UIQ sucks a big one. I then sold it and got a T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard)... I don't use the MDA anymore, only as a pda.

Now I have an SE m600i (weird huh) I use it as a phone only cuz again, the software selection for UIQ sucks a big one.
