Just Got My P990i

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

One word that i can say is wow. This phone is sick, so far so good, it synced with my computer easily no hick ups, I didn't even have to disable any antivirus or firewalls. Very imprssed with the new UI. I had a P900, P910 before and this one blows it out of the water. I text a lot and this phone seems to be great at it. The ony thing i am concerned about is the batt life. Only had the phone for a few hours. Just trying to get use to Symbian again. I am so use to Windows (which i still love) but i think i can say that Symbian has caught up. Wow. Lets hope it stays this way? Where do you get the new firmwares from? I also have pics, i'll try to answer any questions that I can if you have any.

Thanks in advance

congrates
looks like you couldn't wait
could you compare how you like it with respect to the wizard?
i may get this later on
mind if i also ask where and how much?
pm me if you don't want to say it in this thread

I got it from www.plemix.com for $649, cmpared to when i bought my k jam, or even the P900 that is cheap. But no i couldn't wait HP has been screwing around too much, but that doesn't mean that i wont get it down the line? If i miss windows that much. But i was going to sell my k jam but i knew that it is (well to me) the best PPC phone i have ever owned. So as i see it i get the best of both worlds. But hinestly this phone is sweet. And not only on the eyes, but the OS is comparable too Windows.

I just got my P990i last week and was also concern with the battery life but if you disable the 3g and after you charge it a couple of times, the battery is actually good. I can go 2 days with out charging . It also restarted like 7 times the first day after i upgraded the firmware but I have 4 days with out restarting itself. I love the phone by the way. The camera is really good and the keyboard is good after a few days getting used to it. I am using it with Tmobile in NYC

the battery door was so hard to remove at first.

Questions for P990i users:

I want to know some answer before purchasing

How does it compare to the P910i in regards to the O/S speed, used to own an P910i and the O/S speed lags so much it bothers me.

1. Has the speed of the O/S been improved ?

2. Is the CPU still the same since the P800-era ? If not how much faster ?

3. How does it compare to the P910i ?

Thank you all in advance.

1. Yes it has especially with that latest firmware, multitasking is not a pain anymore. I use to own a P900, and a P910. I can say that it's about 30%-40% faster depending on what your doing.

2. No it is a brand new CPU that they added that is clocked at 208MhZ, the P800-910 was clock at 159Mhz. So that makes it about 20% more faster annd trust you do see it.

3.To tell you the truth it doesn't, the P990i is a phone all by it's self. I think only a few and I mean few that can compare to it. Only one comes to mind (HTC Tytn), in size and power. It's like they have re-written the whole OS from when I used it, but i like it. They added features that i never thought i would see in a Symbian phone. I love the P910 it was the most stable phone ever. But the P990i is something to be wreken with. I would say buy it, the price is pretty decent now, compared o when the other were released. So i say go for it.

Hope this helps anymore questions just ask.

1.) How much did your total come to if you don't mine me asking. I'm more concerned with the duties/taxes/brokerage fees.

2.) How is the screen in daylight ?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Canadian Studen for your kind and prompt reply, I couldn't wait that I my P990i today (a side story: I sold my brand new HP HW6828 today which I got free from work and add a few bills and got myself a P990i) Man I must say its a much better phone then the P910i , and I needed 3G non-M$ PDA smart phone (working in HK now and I am on a 3G plan which is dirt cheap and unlimited intra-web session)

But two problems thou

1. O/S speed is still not up to my expectation (scrolling speed is still slow) but much faster then P9xx

2. The darn thing reboots on me when trying to connect in WLAN and gives me white screen of death.

note: mine was a water-product English phone made in France (about $4780 HKD = under $700 CAD BTW )

Does your phone gives to problem when connecting or using in WLAN mode ?

Thanks

Litespeed, what firmware version do you have ?

Posted by: JwY

so i take it is better than the wizard as a phone right?

I haven't has any problems or resets, the only buug that i had was i got a text message and it wouldn't delete. (reminds me of the treo 650, where i got a message and after i read it, and went back to the today screen it showed that i had a new message). The worst thing that they could have done was made the scroll wheel 3D. But I was just comparing it to the older ones and it is much faster then the old P series.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

As a phone yes, with the flip up, it's like a regular cell phone, it is still better with the flip open (because of the static keyboard). In total i would say that they are about even. Windows does have way more programs (free ones) the UIQ. One does one thing better then the other. So in the end i would say equal for right now. But once programs become avaiable for the P990 then it may be the king of all smart phones. That's what most people are saying now anyway. But only time will tell. As long as they keep the firmware updates coming this phone does have what it takes to be called that.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

well I paid $649us for it, and $38us for shipping, and a freaking crazy that pissed me off $71 brokerage/tax fees for it.

well today when the sun came out, I was able to read the screen perfectly. So you don't have to worry about it not showing properly in sunlight.

Hope this helps?

Sorry to hear about your brokerage fees.

It's a relief to hear about your screen.
Thanks yet again for answering all the questions!

actually $71 is already cheap isn't it? You're buying a $700+ phone here. 14% GST/PST in Ontario and that's already $96. There weren't any brokerage fees for me, and I was happy to have paid anything less than $96.

Every store I've purchased cellphones from the GTA (which would be like 4) have never charged me PST.

well if you pay cash you don't have to pay tax at a lot of places ~ assuming they don't issue you a receipt for ur phones ~

how's the 1900 only reception?

i'm still held back by the stability right now and the lack of apps at the moment
some say it's been having problems with wifi (browser takes up too much memory?)
i never had a P-series but i am really considering it

Well I live in Barrie just outside of Toronto and the reception up here is great. I have always had good reception with the P series that i have owned. The only phone that gave me bad reception was the Motorola MPx200 (for GSM) the Audiovox 6600 (from telus). So having only a tri band phone is not an issue for me. Don't get me wrong i would still prefer a quad band, just for a peace of mind. But i will not hesitate to buy a tri band phone ever.

Actually JwY, I'd say 90%+ of the users that had problems with Opera before are able to use the browser and multitask to some extent (with R3B firmware).

I too would like to see one more firmware update (according to MR, it's on the way) to improve stability/speed/optimize memory management more before I make the plunge. I'm leaning more and more towards the P990i over the 69XX.

I'd like the price to drop as well (GTA retailers!) -

Hey Canadian Studen:

Another issue I found with my P990 is that my VJ Singh Golf game won't launch at all ... plus any idea how to install or find language pack (Chinese language pack that I am looking for) in HK they wanna charge me $600 HKD for it !!!

I will post my O/S ver tmr ... switching back to my K800i for now ...

And setting/using Wi-Fi is so unfriendly .... any tips ?

Thank you

thanks, me too. so you're planning on buying locally instead of online?
so far i really like wm5, but i'm still finding devices a bit lacking as a phone
and i love SE, so i want to get something that's the best of both worlds

this is more of a symbian/uiq question, but what is (is there?) a substitute for the today screen from ppc?

I had that issue too, what I did was I stopped all programs, and then launched it and it worked. Or you can cycle your phone, and make that game the first program that you lanch. Annoying I know but mine worked, and it's a pretty kewl game. Amazing graphics for a "cell phone game". Is your connection PW protected. Cause mine is not (even though i know i should make it) But all you have to do is (this is for FO mode)

click on the tab, the one right beside your signal strength, hit connections, click Wireless LAN, Now at the Top there should be an arrow hit that and click enable WLAN, or if you haven't set it up hit new account. Then hi scan, and then the two arrows pointing towards easch other is the connection tab. Hit that and you should be good to go.

Let me know if this helps for you?

oh yeah, another question, how long is the boot time from a reset to fully loaded?

Yes there is, this is one of the main reason why i bought this phone, if it didn't have this "today screen" then I would have passed on it. I like the fact that you can see, your missed calls, how many text/email/mms messages you have new. Also new Appointments, and tasks that you have. There is also a second tab that is called shortcuts, where you can put your fave programs to launch them quicker. Very helpful tool, it's available in FO, and FC modes.
I will try to post a pick of it.

First off the most annoying thing when you turn the phone on, there is a sub screen asking you to power the phone on, or power it on for flight mode only. It takes about 25 seconds. Now if you have ever used a K Jam, and you shut it down fully, it takes about 45-55 seconds depending on what you have loaded on your today screen. So it's pretty fast if you ask me, especially knowing all of the software that it has to load.

Hope this helps?

yes, it helps a lot, thanks. it's so much slower on the k-jam (one of the biggest annoyances for me). i'm getting more and more convinced to get the p990 hehe.

so if you had to list things that the SE has as disadvantages compared to the k-jam, what would you say they are (besides the current lack of apps)? are you using it with the flip on or off?

I am using it FO
Disadvantages for the P990i are, well to tell you the trith the problems I find are really really nit picking problems, ie. I can't get album art to show in the media player, and second in FO mode I can't use the hard buttons to reply to a message i have to hit the screen. Other then that I think it's an amazing device. It's fast, battery life is way better then what i thought it would have been (i still plan on buying an extended battery though). The cam is amazing, the best i have ever owned on a phone. Great screen, there are just so many wonderful things about it, that i really can't say anything bad about it. It hasn't crashed on me yet not problems with syncing it either. Just a great phone, you wont be disappointed.

Oh one more annoying thing that I must mention, there are just to many windows that you have to click into to do certin apps in FO mode. To write a new message you have to give it four raps, goodthing for the scrool wheel cause that helps a lot.

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

I have to run but I just want to add a few things to this discussion for right now.

1.) Canadian student - thank you so much for your responses in this thread, they are a great boon to those that haven't yet bought the P990.

2.) A few of the bugs you mentioned either have workarounds or will be fixed in future firmware updates (I can only say this because the same issues happened with the M600i and they were fixed in subsequent updates. The one about the messaging being buried behind four clicks is a prime example)

I don't think you have to worry about brokerage fees. You see, most of us (at least the ones talking about the price and the OP) are from Canada. Plemix is located in Washington.

Anytime something crosses the border, we get hit with fees like this.

I've ordered numerous items from within Canada (but from other provinces) and I've never had to pay any other fees.

So I would *assume* it's the same with buying from other States in America.

It's actully pretty good, let me tell you my battery life for yesterat

turned my phone on at 9:30

40 minutes of talks, 70 text mesaages, 30 minutes of music play back, 25 minutes of WiFi, 10 minutes of playing Vj's golf game. 60 minutes of other functions. Screen on full brightness. My phone shut off at 1:30 am. Not bad if you ask me, especially when they sent the smaller battery.

They are ver good in my books, if it wasn't for HoFo I would have never heard of them. If it wasn't for the "Plemix countdown thread" I ordered it on Monday and it would have been here Wednesday if it weren't for stupid customs. But two day delivery is not bad. The phone shipped from Hong Kong, China. So they may have an office in Was. But my phone was shipped from over seas.

Hope this helps?

Posted by: philosophy72

thanks for the reply. i will definitely order mines asap.(well monday seeing its the weekend)
Hopefully this restart problem is battery size issue and maybe with the bst-34 that it was supposed to come it can solve all of this.

Nope,

The P990i was supposed to ship with the BST-34 battery (the reviewers and prototype models have it, it WAS listed on the official page). However, they have shipped with a BST-33 battery (~900 mAh vs ~1250 mAh).

Something similar happened with the M600i but it included the charager (supposed to shop with the CST-75 charger) and the first few production batches.

I guess people are HOPING ('cause we can't say for sure) that the latter batches will have the original battery, or at the very least we can purchase that battery as an accessory/part later on.

Just a word of caution JwY - while canadian studen is 100% right, the today screen isn't available on the desktop, you need to press a button to view it.

This is one of the biggest software flaws of the P990 IMO. They have this huge real estate on the "desktop" and they use the bottom 1/5th of it for their mac like "dock" and the rest is just blank space.

I wouldn't have considered buying the P990, if I didn't have confirmation that there is good third party applications that will not only allow you to use the desktop for your today screen but also allow for a more complex/powerful today screen.

Yes that is one of the first things that i have done, cause i heard that is the most battery hungry function in the phone. So yes i put it on GSM only.

it's tricky but here we go

first hit main menu, then tools, then control panel, then connections, then mobile networks, then at the top hit mobile networks, then GSM/3G networks, then hit GSM only.

Hope this helps? Let me know.

thanks (i also just noticed how bad my grammar was where you quoted me ), so have you found software that utilizes the desktop in such a way? i rarely use stock applications, especially for pim, so i will need to look into an equivalent to pocket informant though i don't need as many features as PI. i will also need to look into gps and a few ebook readers.

canadian student, how is the syncing? is it stable? i have heard of a few issues previously. ppc activsync is relatively stable for me and i prefer it over palm's hotsync. btw, a mod could probably change your name if you pm one .

To tell you the truth I haven't really looked for any apps, the only one so far was a movie converter app, that i foound that wa free. Again haven't had time to really paly with it. But to tell you the truth I am pretty happy with the stock OS/UI. I think they have done a really good job. Yes all those storeis you have heard about made me apprehensive again, but i haven't had one problem. I think it's better then the active sync, cause they have so much built in, like a real backup/restore. I mean it has a lot you can perform a lot from the pc suite.

I think I will but it's not a big deal to me to change it, but maybe? You never know.

Let me know if you need anymore?

No worries. I no talk good when tying fast on a message board either.

There is no GOOD desktop/today app yet but there are two very good ones possibly on their way:

1.) "Tracker" by Smartphoneware
http://www.smartphoneware.com/produ...on=tracker4_uiq
This is the UIQ2 version of it with an ugly, ugly skin - LOL. However, Tracker is a very, very good program and would meet the needs of even the most demanding user.

2.) "Untitled" by Cellphonesoft:
http://cellphonesoft.com.
When or what functionality is still be determined.

------------------

I would assume that Epocware would be offering it's Handy Day Professional software sometime soon as well (they already have a very, very basic version of the software available for purchase)

Basic Version for UIQ3:
http://se-p990-software.epocware.com/Handy_Day.html

Professional Version for UIQ2:

I assume you are using Windows XP ?

Uninstall SEUS. Delete all files manually. Reboot. Reinstall SEUS. Reboot.

Start SEUS. That should work.

Thanks for your kind reply, I will try tonight, hope it works, it's sad too look at my P990i just keeps flashing white and do nothing else .

Yes I am using Winblows XP but I never would imagine that doing that would work ... it is strange (not that I am questioning you, I apologized if I sound like I am) that doing that would save my P990i from being a paper weight...

Why Sym 9.x is buggy this time around. My other friends N80 keeps crashing too ... I almost miss my P910i

Well, I'm not guaranteeing that it WILL work but I think there's a good chance.

Think of it this way, if you were installing a program and halfway through the installation procedure, the installer crashes. Now, you try to open/start the program but it won't work because it has only partially installed.

Should you have an error while using SEUS, it is possible that your phone's OS has only been "partially installed".

With all of the discussion on this phone in this thread, how would you guys that own the P990 rate it overall from 1 (the worst) to 10 (the best). I am so close to pulling the trigger on getting one but I'd like a few more opinions on it.

Also, where are sites you can get 3rd party apps from. The only one I know of is my-symbian.com. Thanks so much, D

www.cellphonesoft.com

Download SwissManager. It's freeware and can help with the freeing up more memory.

Glad to hear that your P990 is functional again.

Sorry guys (had to spend some time with the old lady lol) Anyway i would honestly rate the P990i a 9.8 out of 10. with one more firmware this phone would be almost perfect in my opinion. This phone has it all. I am so imprseed with it, it's amazing.

If anyone has any more questions please feel free to ask.

Canadian Student: What's your fireware version ? I heard the newest should be R7A ?

R7A for phone

Weird, where you download your update software from ?

SE Offical update software location wise.

What language does your phone support ?

Where is it made in ?

Mine is Made in France

Thanks

Posted by: fijbert

personally, I am very disappointed in this phone
as most of you know, I am a BIG Pxx0 fan to the point where I even picked up prototypes and even had from the first batch of every Pxx0

I'm not one to bash the Pxx0 series
Well, Sony Ericsson has really done it.. they took a working amazing product such as the P910i, and said "let's take everything that works, and throw it out the window".
They removed the 5way jog-dial.
The housing offers too much resistance to take off the battery cover and no resistance on the keylock button.
The RAM is insufficient. Multitasking has been obliterated from the vocabulary of this phone.
The Phone REQUIRES a reboot every 3 days.
The UMTS Camera cannot be accessed unless within a video call. (gay.. I loved that about the N series)
The screen quality is terrible (the OS reports the screens used as 4096 colors for some odd-reason, as if tampered with)
M-router is horrible.. I have nothing but problems with it. I cant even connect my phone via USB thx to the new PC Suite + new firmware

if the next firmware does not fix these major problems in my eyes, then bye bye Symbian... I was disappointed by the new Series 60 and even more so by UIQ 3

those look like great potential apps. it really is too bad version 3 isn't compatible with the older symbian software. i will definately look out for the ones you mentioned. so how close are you to getting the p990? right now for me, it's essentially a race between the p990 and the excaliber to see which one offers the most at something i can afford (or at least until the price seems more leveled). the fact that rogers is supposed to pick up the excaliber (i still think it looks ugly ) makes me think i should wait a bit.

Funny as it seems, no matter how I upgrade it will only stays at R4A... I wonder does the update software determine your actual geographical region to upgrade... I am currently in Hong Kong ...

May I ask you volks with R7A where are you at ? I know Dereck Toronto is in T.O

But what about others ?

Posted by: canadian studen

Just thought i would give an undtae on my P990i, it is a joy to use, but there are just a couple of bugs that I hope SE works out very soon. For one, there were two occasions where the phone didn't recieve any texts, all it took was a power cycle. Not bad but pretty annoying nonetheless. I have only has one reset, which was cause by me, I had all my programs running, then the camera slider opened up, and i closed it right away. Then it said it had too reset. Not a big deal. Everything else seems pretty good to me, other than those problems I give this phone a 9.5. If Sony works out those problems than honestly this would be the perfect phone. the Symbian/UIQ is a realy treat to use. The cam is wow amazing, it takes really good pics. The sound quality is good, it also has a great movie playback (when you convert the file to mp4, with super freeware). The MP3 player is good too, very crisp sounds, I just can't get album art to work? Despite the soze of this phone, it's really lite. The KB is great. The phone is great either way (flip on/off) I keep mine on just because of one really factor, which is that you can't reply to a text message without touching the screen. If it weren;t for that i would keep it off, cause it makes the phone look slimmer. But for everyone who was still having doubts about buying it? You shouldn't cause this phone is great, once Sony wokrs out those couple of bugs then they sure have a winner on there hands.

One more thing one of the coolest apps that I started using once I got my P900i is the rss app. It's pretty neat and it downloads them fast especially when your on WiFi. I really do love this phone, you guys/gals wont be disappointed.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask, I'll try to answer them the best that I can.

Posted by: JwY

glad you're pretty happy with it so far. so you're not going back to ppc for a while?
i'm saving up for the SE right now, and i'm also waiting for the excaliber and the i600/607.

Posted by: vvnnyc

how to send and print text file from p990 via router or directly to print server? i cant figure out it yet is it possible in general ?

thank you !

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

So I broke down and got myself a P990.

It could be that I was weak, or it could be the fact that a dog chewed my K750 and
HP 6515 (along with a pen, some of my wallet, and an entire pack of gum).

I got the phone and I'm loving every minute of it. I can see the potential, if SE can pound out a few more firmware releases (history says they will) and I can get a solid Today Screen application, I'm going to be a happy, happy man-boy.

I'm going to play around with it for a day or two, then update the firmware.

JwY, you're next!

awww, that's such a sad ending for your k750. i had it and thought it was one of the best phones.

i'll get it if i can save up enough for it. i'm not sure if i should sell my wizard for it first. mind if i ask how much you got it for?

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

Yeah, what a freak way to go. Poor K750.

My P990 is "made in france" according to the phone but "assembled in the USA" according to the box.

I also have English and Spanish manuals, and a North America charger (no need for an adapter).

Does anyone else have this "package" ?

I have the same package too. Welcome home. Just a question did you have any WM Phones? If you did how much better do you lik Symbian/UIQ? For me I find it the same, there pretty much as rich, and useful as can be.

Honestly, the phone isn't as bulky as people make it out to be. Sure compared to the Razor, it's half a cm thicker, but with the flip off, it's THINNER than a K800/K790.

I honestly didn't like the style when I first saw the phone, but perhaps I'm getting a little biased now (esp, with flip off and the blue backlight on the keypad. )

Congratulations on your purchase.

Posted by: lastdon00

hehehe well Fedex made my trip short, and they came and dropped it off, and ON a SATURDAY!!!!!!!, THEY had told me i would have to go pick it up lol.

anyway

yeh it's not that bulky , at all. bit taller then my w810i
anyway the tytn was heavier that much i can confirm. and i think the tytn was more bulky, i sold it, so i dont have it here to compare anymore.

!!

am i the only one that likes the keypad lol

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

The keypad on is the true essence of the P990 and that's what it makes it unique. I also find that it's more effective than the sliding lanscape QWERTY keypad.

But, I just prefer the QWERTY only.

Posted by: canadian studen

I really never knew how convenient it was to have a regular dial pad, and a static QWERTY key board. the dial pad is nice for a quick reply, especially while driving, cause for me I don't have to look at the phone. Then if I'm going to reply to a longer message, or e-mail I have a key board right there. With my Wizard I really missed having those two things, and never really hit me until I had my P990. This is really a great phone just waiting on those updates. I've also purchased the Sony Ericsson bluetooth headphones. They work great, and the sound quality is amazing. The number one accessory that I am waiting for is the bigger battery. Like I said before my Wizard is great, but the slide out key board is too much of a pain. I prefer the static key boards.

just my 2 cents.

Posted by: LosLobotomy

I finally took the plunge. My P990i should be here on Monday or Tuesday.
I couldn't decide between the Tytn or the P990i. For some reason the SE
just seemed like a better fit for me. So the waiting begins.....

Do you know if Skype is going to be available for this?

It would be nice to be able to use this phone as a Skype handset, as you can with the HTC devices, or rather, Windows devices, to be more specific.

This phone seems really nice, and I'm really considering buying it, but I'm not sure what Plemix would charge for shipping to the UK: what would be the approximate information on customs and import duties? And how much would I be paying on top of their advertised price (which is at 619 USD, might I add)?

Thanks in advance for letting me know.

edit: also, would it be possible to make an FAQ like this?
And another question to add: is it possible to record conversations? That would be very helpful in my forgetful life

i just remembered a reason why i didn't get the p990 yet. do you guys know if it natively supports a BT keyboard? i have the thinkoutside stowaway keyboard for times when i need to type long documents on the go and WM5 supports it without needing additional drivers. so far thinkoutside hasn't release any drivers for UIQ3, but i kind of need it on whatever pda phone i use. it has drivers for the older UIQ on the p910, etc, but i doubt that would work on the p990.

I don't regret it at all.

There are some issues that would make this device truly awesome, I hope SE will address these issues in future updates. Third party software would be another route as well.

The keyboard is fantastic, it's seems so small but it works so well IMO.

Does anyone else get a P990 that has English/Spanish manuals and says "Made in France with assembled parts in the US" on the box ?

this phone is so awesome, definitely the best phone i have owned. works great with hbh-ds970 headset, it is a bless to my life. don't hesitate, just buy the phone. Everything is so well integrated together and working as expected. Not missing WM5 at all.

1.) I have never ordered from plemix but I would guess that to get it across the Atlantic, it would be somewhere from 30-50 (depends on what shipping method you choose.

That brings you to maybe 650-670 USD. So that's around 355 GBP. As far as import duties/customs - I am not familiar with how much the duties/taxes are in the UK.

Sorry. Best bet is to ask plemix directly ?

2.) Skype is reportedly on it's way but it's deployment has been delayed.

3.) The FAQ is a great idea.

4.) You can't record phone conversations.

I can't ask Plemix, because I'm at university right now, and I'm behind a university connection, but I'll try again and see if it works.

Do you know if, for the P910i, recording was available through third party apps? Because, if I'm not mistaken, it's also not possible to record conversation straight out of the box, so it may be that someone might develop some software for it (it being the P990i).

Do you know if, for the P910i, recording was available through third party apps? Because, if I'm not mistaken, it's also not possible to record conversation straight out of the box, so it may be that someone might develop some software for it (it being the P990i).

I'll ask plemix for you, when I get the chance today. They have a handy online chat feature.

Can you not get the P990 cheaper somewhere local in the UK ? CPW perhaps ?

I don't know about the previous P series and their ability to record conversations out of the box. Sorry.

CPW only does then on 50 GBP+ contracts, and they are a bit on the steep side. Also, entering a contract would mean that I'm bound to the provider fo 12 months, but if I get the phone seperately, I could change my contract. When I say that they only do them on the 50 GBP+ contracts, that's when the phone is free. Also, I seriously hate 18 months contracts, though they do have quite the deal on it here
As you can see from the link above, only the 50GBP contract gives the phone for free. Otherwise I have to pay for the phone.

Also, 50 GBP comes out to approximately double the price of the phone, so half of it is only going to my minutes. If I were to buy the phone offline, then I could opt for a cheaper contract, since I don't use that many minutes anyways.

But, yea, thanks for asking them on my behalf. I really appreciate that.

It is indeed.

I've run the numbers, and from the two, O2 and Vodafone, Vodafone is indeed cheaper, but O2 gives cross network minutes as well.

I'm with Orange at the moment, and my contract finishes sometime this month, so hopefully by the time, they should have the phone on their network, but I'm just wondering if the prices offline (for example buying the phone with Plexis) is going to be cheaper, considering that they might drop a little (or at least I hope that they do drop a little).

Anyways, I'm really just waiting for my Orange network to finish, because I'm getting a good deal on it, and I don't want to leave it. Hopefully though they have the phone on a good contract.

I can't wait.

Hope it all works out for you, keep us informed, and as you know if you haven't seen the "plemix count down" thread, to see what the price is.

I don't know how the tariffs works in the UK (quite different that the monthly fees we have here in Canada) but I believe that the P990 is supposed to be released mid October on both O2 and Orange.

Plemix didn't have their online chat available today, I'll check again tommorow.

Although I still think your best bet is to go with an Orange subsidized unit.

I got mine for £350 on a low tarriff from Vodafone, as I know that I never use the minutes.

That's the thing....mid October....I can't wait!!! And it's going to have some kind of weird Orang firmware on it.

But I'll still probably get it on Orange because 1) I'm already with them 2) I think it may, in the end, turn out cheaper.

I know what you mean bu getting a orange barmded phone, I read a lot of Vodaphone people are having problems cause they are so slow with the firmware updates. Maybe unlocked is the best way to go? But we all know it comes down to price.

Is flashing to the original firmware allowed? And if so, how is it done? And if I want to go back to the Orange firmware, how would I do it.

I currently have the P910i, and the Orange firmware on that is a good thing because it gives me a nice desktop, and a side bar. The problem would be if I don't like it on the P990i. Then I would like to flash it.

edit : also, I wanted to know how I could find out what firmware version I had, and how I could update it on a P910i (Orange firmware) if there are any significant updates.

You mean you bought the phone for 350 GBP on the tariff? Which tariff is it?

Fromwhat I read Vodaphone user can only use vodaphone updates. Which is the big problem, cause I heard that they are really slow with the updates, and that SE will be releasing the newerr updates for the unlocked versions first. The best way to check is to go to the SE up site and see, if you do have the latest firmware.

okay, i got some more questions. i really want to take the plunge.

1) is there a sound recorder at all? i constantly use the recorder for lectures or meetings, etc, not phone calls. if so, what formats can it record and how big do they seem? (i don't want something like high bitrate wav) i couldn't find any third party recorders for uiq3 yet.

2) how the reception on the 1900 compared to say the k750 or the wizard (even though it doesn't have 850). the k750 was good enough for me, so anything better would be a plus.

3) how's battery life? since i hear the bigger batteries aren't shipping with them right now, i'm not sure if it's decent. what are your usage patterns like?

4) does the camera have a shutter mute so it doesn't make a loud sound? i don't want it to go off in a library hehe.

thanks guys

1.) I never record but I just did a test record. It's saved in .amr format and it's roughly 1.2 kb for each second of recording.

2.) RF is better than K750 IMO (in the GTA anyway)

3.) I haven't really been checking my battery levels but I have bluetooth on 24/7, usually have about 1 hour of phone calls, send/receive about 25 (combined) text messages a day, listen to about 1 hour of mp3s and do some light surfing (25 minutes), and I play with the phone's menus. I have the backlight at 60%. I haven't had it die on me yet, and with the included deskstand charger, I just drop it onto the deskstand every night.

4.) Yes, camera sound can be muted.

Hey 1. yes there is a sound recorder. Not sure of what format give me a bit and I'll find out for you.

2. The reception to me is great, i live in cottage country (barrie) but the reception is great up here. No complaints what so ever. Compared to my K-jam where I get full bars, i get 4 bars. That's not bad to me. But I have noticed with this phone it really fights for a signal, compared to my Wizard that if you didn't do the hack then you will lose your signal, and it will take forever to get it back.

3. The battery life is ok, I send mostly text/e-mails/mms about 80-100 a day. 30 minutes of calls, 20 minutes of music (wireless) 20 pics, 10 in WiFi, 10 minutes of the golf game. Turned phone on at 9:30, shut off by it's self at 1:30. Not bad if you ask me, but this is a hard day to me. Usually just the text and calls are usually what is every day, turn the phone on at the same time, and by midnight i'm at 40-35%.

4. yes it does.

Hope this helps let me know?

sounds good thanks!
so there's no other recording formats of size/quality/sensitivity options?
i actually used the k750 to record a lecture once and it wasn't bad

The limit should be unlimited. Depending on card or internal.

No options beyond mapping the internet button to the sound recorder, where you save the recording to, and using it as a ringtone.

The size of the recording is only limited to the size of your storage medium (be it the phone's memory or the external MS Duo Pro).

Here's a link to what seems to be a pretty advanced sound recorder for UIQ2.0. Maybe the developers have a UIQ3 port in the works, they just released this software S60v3

thanks again both of you for answering my questions so quickly and thoroughly
looks like i'm getting it as soon as i save enough for it
in the meantime i hope they do release that app and many other third party apps as well

My k750 and t68i could record conversations in-call... can the P990i do this too? I haven't noticed a menu for that.

nope (or not that I've found). it was the same for the rest of the P-Series

Too bad!
It is a GREAT feature for people who don't like taking notes!

i would guess the best workaround for that would be to switch to speakerphone and hit the sound recorder. That would only work when you were in a place that would be quiet enough for that..

i got my p990i last weekend and all i have to say is WOW one of the best phones i have ever used....

Hi Canadian Student,

As you own a P990i, i was wandering if you could let me know about the call log duration for this phone. that is like what is the number of calls saved in the log? Normally most phones have 20,20,20 for dialed, recieved and missed calls each. But some advanced phones can save un
