Is there a VoIP company, that would just let me have a virtual (US) number and forward all calls to a different (canadian) number ??
Or do I have to signup for the whole plan with all of them??

Are you forwarding to a landline phone, or a VOIP (SIP) phone?

If it's to a VOIP phone, you can get free US numbers from ipkall.com or freedigits.net, and forward them to any open SIP phone address. Both have very limited area codes to chose from.

I have an account at a UK voip company (voipfone.co.uk) that has no monthly charge. I have a free number at ipkall that I forward to a sip address like myaccount@voipfone.co.uk. Result: incoming calls from a US number (and UK number) at no per minute cost and no per month cost.

You should be able to do the same with any voip company that allows incoming voip calls (i.e. not vonage, skype etc). The key point: you forward the calls to your voip phone's SIP address, not to your Canadian phone number.

Alternatively if you don't have a VOIP phone, add one more step to forward the call out of the no-monthly-charge voip company to a landline. Incoming calls will then cost the price of a call from them to your landline, often 1-3c/min.

I checked out Grand Central.. that service DOES offer call forwarding to Canadian numbers.. I set up my london Cell number in there, and called the GC#, my cell rang.. no CID info came through tho.. could be a vonage issue (since I used voaneg to place the call to GC) or a GC issue, not sure..

what I thought is, this would be GREAT for someone like me, when I go to the US, I use a TMo2Go prepaid SIM, well, when I call back home to my friends/family I have to pay Tmo 40c/min LD, but if I set up a GC# for each of my friends here, I could just call a US based number, to reach my friends here.. and sice Domestic LD is included on most, if not all, US cell's, no more 40c/min LD charges.. of course, this would be a bit of a pain at first, but once the numbers are set up it would be nice.. you only get 100 mins of free forwarding/mo, but for a week long trip, thats likely enough, it's a good savings anyways.. and if there's one number you call alot, for a small fee you can buy a bucket of mins that will roll over month after month untill you use them up..

of course, if you live in the US and want to do this, and/or are near a computer all the time, you can make one acct, even if you pay the Unlimited fee, and just change the forwarding number all the time, and you can call CDN numbers all the time, or other LD US numbers form your house, assuming you can get a local GC number, they are pretty limited cities so far.. I had to choose a York SC # as it was the only 803 # avail at this time.. so its still LD from my wifes family in Columbia.. I just got it to play with it anyways, as I'm bored tonight.. .. LoL!
