3125 slow Internet / MediaNet

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just bought 2 Cingular 3125s from my local Cingular store. Both are extremely slow at displaying web pages, including something as easy as the MediaNet homepage. It takes a full 3 minutes to get the MediaNet homepage to display. When trying to access the internet, the phone will display "locating" for up to a minute, then "opening". MediaNet homepage will come up within a few minutes usually. When trying to access other "real" web pages, "locating" will be displayed sometimes for several minutes, then I'll get the blue progress bar at the bottom of the screen that will sit a 2k for what seems like forever before ever-so-slowly moving toward the end of the bar.

Here's what I have done to troubleshoot:

1. I have verified my data settings on the phone, which seem to be OK "out of the box".

2. Cleared my history/temp internet files, etc.

3. Power-cycling the phone.

4. Tried a different SIM. (One line still has the old MediaWorks plan on it, the other SIM has the $19.95 smartphone connect).

Any other ideas before I take these things back to the store?

You can put in different DNS settings. Do a search in the PPC Forums

The DNS fix works for most using a PPC, but did not work for many using a smartphone. I had to get my account provisioned to isp.cingular in addtion to wap.cingular to fix the "locating" problem. Once I did that and changed my APN to isp.cingular and user name to ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM the pages were immediately located. This issue and been discussed in detail in other threads so you may want to search and read through them.

Changing the DNS settings didn't work. Still gets hung on "locating" and eventually tries to display the page, but it's still painfully slow!

This is not a fault of the phone. It's a recent Cingular problem. Same thing is happening to me with my 3125, 2125 and 8125 PPC.

Call tech support and complain.

Is Cingular allowing you to use this in place of wap for the same price, or are you paying extra???

Another interesting observation. I am not getting the delay with accessing through Opera Mini.

They are charging me the $39.99 price but giving me back a credit of $19.99. Not sure how many months they'll do that but that's my plan until the issue is corrected. On a side note, with the regular wap.cingular set up on the 3125, if I go through the Medianet icon, it takes forever to connect/locate but after that the "locating" issue is gone. But that is with IE set to Wap Network in Connections. I always change that to Internet because I want the full Google page, etc. not the wap version. When I change the setting to Internet, the "locating" problem comes back. So, I'm stuck with the isp.cingular set up until something changes with Cingular.

I'm having the same issue with my 3125. My phone goes dark twice before it starts loading a page. Very annoying. I'll be calling Cingular today to report it.

weird.... I just did a speed test and this thing is kicking! 290kb's per second.

Posted by: en4rcer

I just called Cingular CS to ask about the slow data speeds on my handset. I was told basically that it's the fastest the phone can go right now. I also asked about changing to isp.cingular . . . CS put me on hold & checked with tech support who said that isp.cingular wouldn't work with my handset (Cingular 3125), which I find hard to believe.

The only good news, if the above is true, I can keep my grandfathered MEdiaWorks plan and won't have to switch to get faster data rates!

Another update. I called CS again, tried a different approach. I can't download Xpressmail. I can go to the download page, but when I go to "download now" the progress meter either stays @ 0 or goes up to 11.8k or so, then times out.

This CSR said it's most likely because my IMEI on file doesn't match the 3125 I'm using now. And I can't change it because the IMEI of this handset is on one of my new lines that I'm waiting for a rebate on!

Then, once the rebate comes through, there's still go guarantee this is going to work! Could the IMEI be the problem?

OK, last post on this from me. I made sure the SIM & IMEI matched Cingular's records and called CS again, explaining the problem once again. I finally made it to an actual tech support person who spent 45 minutes on the phone with me. We tried changing APNs, proxys, and making sure my account was properly provisioned. No luck. Still slow and not able to download applications (such as Xpressmail) from Cingular. The call ended with tech support suggesting I contact the manufacturer.

But he then said he's contact them and email me with the results . . .

If there's any interest, I'll post the email when I get it.

I'm about to take my 3125 back to the store!

Oposite issue here. I downloaded Opera Mini because some site pages weren't readable on the IE browser. They look fine on Opera Mini, but take forever to load. Somewhat simple pages are taking significantly longer than sites like google maps on IE. This is all new to me, but I thought Opera Mini was supposed to cut down on content and load the pages faster.

Opera mini just talks to the Opera proxy server, which actually downloads the pages for you and then transcodes it so that it can be displayed on the handset .. I guess .. it might be an troublesome to transcode some sites ..

FWIW my 3125 crawls in IE too.

What data plans are you using? I got the 9.99 5MB plan, and I can't access any website besides the mobile.msn.com page...do I have to upgrade to the 19.99 plan to have access to all internet? BTW, even the msn.com page loads very slowly. I'm in downtown Sacramento, have four bars, EDGE.

Posted by: en4rcer

On one line, I'm using and old MEdiaWorks plan. The other line has a "new" Smartphone unlimited with Xpressmail feature. Both are $19.99 (or $19.95) each.

Wow this is not good news... I was going to maybe get a 3125 but I guess I'll wait?

Posted by: iJITSU

The 3125 WILL work with isp.cingular, you just have to be willing to upgrade to the pda connect plan which automatically gives you access to isp.cingular. You have to change several settings in the phone after that to access through that APN.
Try this though: try connecting to the web through the MediaNet icon and THEN go to whatever page you want. On my 3125, leaving everthing as is, when I accessed the web using the MediaNet icon, it took forever to connect/locate but once it found and loaded the MediaNet homepage, the "locating" issue went away for any other site I visited as long a I did it in this manner. When I tried to connect using the PIE icon, the locating issue was still there. If that doesn't work with you then you're probably stuck until Cingular corrects the DNS issue or you change plans.

Looks like I fixed the slow speed problem myself without tech support. Here's what I did:

Go to: START > INTERNET EXPLORER > TOOLS > MENU > OPTIONS >CONNECTIONS

Leave "Automatically detect settings" unchecked

Under "Select Network", choose "The Internet"

I'm getting my "normal" EDGE speeds (~65K or so) and speedy page loads!

Hope this helps out someone out there.

(only bad thing is I can't seem to access the MEdiaNet Hompage - no big deal to me)

Posted by: lgreenberg

I'm going to give that a try en4rcer.

I don't use the Media Net home page so that con won't effect me.

great tip, this is how i had my MPx220 configured and it never occured to me to go check it. this does help the speed somewhat, but yes, it prevents access to medianet. typically not a problem, but there are a couple of WAP sites i like that i can't get to w/o going thru the proxy (CNN, TWC are two that come to mind). but i've learned to live w/o them.

I find myself changing back and forth depending on what I want to get to.

I thought I found a faster way but it doesn't work. If you go to SETTINGS > CONNECTIONS (#7) > PROXY (# 6), it says Cingular WAP. Hit MENU, then EDIT and you can change both the "connects from" and "connects to" settings to either WAP or Internet, but when you click DONE to save the new settings it says "settings cannot be saved."
