Just got my first Treo

So after some research, I got a 700p for VZW this afternoon.

This is my first Palm device and I'm really excited!! Can't imagine the amount of softwares out there for Palm and what you can do with it!

Having a couple of questions so far:

1. Is Palm OS like S60: You have to "quit" the program after you done or it'll stay running at the background and eat up the memory.

If so, how do you "quit". So far I'm just using the application button to get back to the main screen.

2. I'm getting my 2GB SD card in a couple of days and wondering how easy is it to install and run an application from the card instead of the OS RAM. Do you need a 3rd party software to do that?
I use OS X so do I just connect my treo to my mac and then drop the file?

I'm getting the unlimited data plan when my next billing cycle start, which is in a week or so. That's why I'm gonna install the softwares from my computer.

Thanks guys! I'm gonna go play with my new toy now...

The Treo 700p from Verizon is an excelent device! Glad to hear you use a Macintosh because the Mac and Palm were made for each other.

To close a Palm OS program, all you do is hit the home key. That is also where all your programs are located. You can run programs off the memory card by installing them to it. There are more complicated advanced ways but the basic is that all applications on the memory card will be under the category Card...

I would follow the install setup guide to get it syncing with OS X. Then call Apple and they should be able to walk you through the syncing of iCal, Address Book, and Mail with the Palm OS.

The Treo 700p supports up to 4GB SD cards, so you can always expand beyond the 2GB card.

Good third party programs:
VeriChat (costs $25 a year but easy to use, AIM, Jabber, MSN, etc)
BackupBuddy (most Palm OS users swear by this simple backup program, $10)
DiddleBug (free drawing program if you get bored)
pTunes Deluxe (if you plan to steam internet radio stations over the EvDO, pick up the deluxe edition)
TreoAlarm (great free weather and alarm clock)
CardExport (allows you to mount your SD card on your OS X desktop)
HandZipperLite (free program to unzipping .zip files, amazing!)

Those are the ones in my Main menu on my Treo 650. Also if you want, you can get push e-mail programs that work with the EvDO so you have blackberry type email.

Hope you enjoy the brand new Treo, and welcome to the Palm OS community!

Actually, I recommed that you DO NOT install any new apps until you are comfortable and understand completly what your Treo does and doesnt do. That is the only way that you can truely understand the benefits and limitations of your new Treo.

To answer your questions. To "quit a program" hit the HOME button and that's all. Some programs might ask you if you want to save info. Many should come back to the same place you left them after you quit, but some will not.

Applications can be installed or copied to your SD card pretty easily. However, unless you use a program type called a 'launcher' it will be hard to do things such as put them in categories, rename, and other functions. Once you get comfy, try the launcher programs Launcher X, Facer, Initate, and ZLauncher. Those give you very different experiences as well as highlight some things within and not within the PalmOS.

Enjoy your new Treo.

I would recomment at least installing VeriChat (trial) you can chat on AIM, MSN, etc. But it might be a good idea to spend a day or two with the Treo 700p before loading it up.

Actually all you need to do to quit an app is press any of the 4 main app buttons. This is true for all the apps that come with the Treo and most 3rd party apps. For example, if you're playing solitaire and you decide to check your calendar, you'd hit the calendar and you go straight to it. No need to hit the Home key first. The Windows version of the 700 is different - if you did that same thing on the 700W, the solitaire game would still be open in the background using up device RAM memory. The PalmOS is different and, easier to use I think.

Hello autumninchicago,

This is Kevin from Palm. Congratulations on your new Treo. Others have already given you good info regarding your questions. I'll just add that another good resource for useful information, user guides, updates, tips and tricks, etc is at Palm's main Support page for the
Verizon Treo 700p. And don't forget to register it here to stay up to date on any information regarding discounts and promotional offers that may come up. Last but not least, keep HowardForums bookmarked; it's a great site with lots of helpful members.

Enjoy
Kevin

I tried verichat and didn't like it. I tried Mundu IM3 and loved it. All of you using Verichat need to testdrive Mundu, it's located here http://www.geodesiconline.com/htm/p.../mundu_palm.htm

Good luck with your new treo.

PocketTunes keeps playing no matter how many buttons I press, until I pause the song. I checked preferences but couldn't find how to correct this.
Any clues?

You have PocketTunes set to play in the background. IF you want it to quit playing, hit the smaller button on the side of your Treo, or just pause/stop it before exiting.

Thanks guys for the replies!!

I'm getting around with my Treo. It's pretty easy to use so far.

Questions about the softwares:

1. Seems like a lot of people are using either LaucherX or ZLaucher. What's the pro and cons of them. Are they stable like the OEM Laucher?

2. About the voice recording program: mVoice V.S. CallRec. Seems like they are both pretty buggy from a review I read from Treonauts. Any suggestions?

3.Note taking program with hand writing: BugMe VS Notepad VS Pennovate Note. Or just get the MobileWrite for all the applications?

4. Backup software: BackupBuddy VS Innerbackup VS OnGuard Backup.

5. If unzip software is a must then what do you recommend? Is Handzipperlite a good one?

6. How's Xiino compare to Blazer? Is it really a faster and better browser?

7. Is a uninstall manager a must?

8. Need some suggestions for a Media video player.

9. Any software for Mac like pocket dvd wizard? (To convert DVD on to SD)

10. Can I set MP3 ringtones through Butler or PhoneTechician? Or I have to get something like RingPro or mRing?

11. For all the IM softwares. Does it cost additional text message if you use it or it's free if you have unlimited data plan?

I understand the answer are all subjective but just want some inputs. Esp. if you own an VZW 700p.

Many thanks!

Chatter and the AIM program gave me problems. I uninstalled them and switched to snappermail and IM+, and have none.

Also, do NOT install versamail. It has caused me more problems than I care to go into. Needless to say, it is once again unstable.

Some programs I use daily and have no issues with are:

-Snappermail Exchange Ed.(for email, and I love it)
-BT Mute (work around for the slight delay for BT headsets)
-LauncherX (Better program launcher than Palm's standard one)
-Uninstall manager (NEED THIS ONE!, I couldn't live without it)
-mRinger (assign mp3's to individual contacts)
-Backup Buddy VFS Pro
-Docs-2-go Professional (for pdf files)
-Butler (ANOTHER MUST!)
-KB Lights Off (saves battery by turning qwerty lights off during day)
-Agendus Pro (better contacts/calendar app)
-Audible (for ebooks, and it's great)
-File Explorer (A 3rd MUST HAVE)
-Card Export II (makes file transfer a snap)
-IM+ (for chat)
-TCPMP (freeware for all video formats, and awesome!)
-VolumeCare Pro (The 4th & last MUST HAVE!)
-Soft Reset (comes in handy)
-Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide 2006 (guilty pleasure)

With all of these, I have no stability issues whatsoever.
