Data package required for the 3125 rebate?

I went in today to buy a new 3125 from a cingular store. I ended up buying the phone for 300 with a 150 mail in rebate. The store rep said I was required to buy a data package in order to get the rebate. I said, ok, as i was just going to take it off my plan afterward. Unfortunately, the only data plan that was "eligible" for use with the rebate was a 20 dollar unlimited data usage plan. She stated that I'd need to keep the plan on until i get the rebate in my hands, otherwise, it may decline the rebate once i mail it in.
Anyone had the same experience?

Very much true.

Says right on the rebate form that it is valid with new activation and an unlimited data package, in your case smart phone connect.

"Cingular wireless service and required features must be active when the offer form is processed and validated to be eligible for the reward card"
