I dont post on this part of this forum much since I own a treo650, I was thinking about getting a Sidekick III and I know it would be a pretty big downgrade but the main reason I would want to get one is so I can always be on AIM. On top of that I was thinking of giving Tmobile a try since I hear they have better plans. So anywho how is everyone enjoying their SK3?

Its pretty enjoyable. I'm on AIM 24/7. And you?

It really has it's moments. When it's working properly it's awesome but then you get the usual random dropped internet connection, and hit airplane mode and at that moment miss an important call you just wanna throw it away. Overall it's been pretty good though...it's stll *fairly* new...so I'm gonna stick with it for awhile.

I love the Sidekick 3 its a huge improvement from the II faster Internet (Browser) smoother running applications, mp3 player although I wish it was louder, Changable wallpaper, way Better Camera, and a Real Good Instant Messaging Aol/Msn/Yahoo

I've tried the MDA and it doesn't live up to the hype, it freezes from time to time, the aol instant messenger isn't the best and that's what I use the Sidekick 3 mainly for Instant Messaging and of course their is no tmail

Posted by: jsav

Basically, if you want a device that will frustrate you half of the time, be irreliable, and give you no battery life, get the Sidekick 3.

^^^^^^^Like I said in another section U have to train your sidekick 3 battery like anything else

Posted by: iWonder

my battery life lasts the whole day.. and if it doesnt listen i just pull out a spray bottle of water and it WILL behave!

Even with the battery trained, the battery sucks. I get to work at 6am so take the charger off around 530am, get off work about 2pm...get some lunch and hang out with friends and it's dead by 5pm. That is *almost* 12 hours and is the average life of my sidekick3. I've had replacement phones and also other batteries it does the same thing. I'm seriously considering switching because I hate worrying about the battery even when I have a car charger. But I don't want to switch when there is no OTA yet...I hope it fixes the problem!

Posted by: ticos

what about using it for internet AIM n text only would it still drain the battery

Posted by: iWonder

it doesn't matter what your doing, the battery drains evenly.. i think..

Posted by: djransom

I've had mine since Wednesday and I love it.

I was thinking about upgrading from a SK2 to a SK3 but everybody is complaining about the battery life. My question is, what if you don't text/IM/use the internet that often during the day does the battery still go down as much?

It shouldn't..

And i want to say that my sidekick has been one for a day and a half and its still at 2 bars with moderate use of IMing and web browsing and catalog browsing..

Posted by: nextelman1973

I hated the battery life when I first got it, but after training the battery like the others members here recomend my battery life is Great!! What I did was used the SK3 til the battery was completly dead every night...When I first started my battery was dead by about 6pm by the end I was up past midnight tring to kill it. To give you an example of my Usage I use about 3000 mintues a month plus on AIM most of the day and Internet here and there..I really dont use the MP3 player since I already have an Ipod.
Back to going from a treo to the SK3...I also agree that when its working well, Its the best thing since sliced bread, But then it has it moments that it goes out of service for no reason and all of a sudden your voice mail indicator is on and you have 3 new voice mails. For example @ my house I have perfect service, I will be on my couch and it goes from full service to no service...sometimes it goes back to full service on its own and sometimes I gotta do the airplane mode trick. If the SK3 didn't have these brain farts, it would be one of the best devices out there...the good news is that it can be fixed with an OTA update (hopefully soon) One last thing, the camera works well outdoors and in great light, but it takes very grainy pics in low light..but I think thats pretty normal for a low res camera.

Posted by: danielsard

I myself am enjoying every minute of my Sidekick... its a big downgrade from my SE k750i, but i dont regret having done it... i can be on the internet almost everywhere at every time and i can chat with my contacts on the msn messenger

It does. The sidekick loses battery when it's laying around doing nothing because it constantly has to sync with the servers 24/7. It's probably why sidekick has such a low stand-by time.

Posted by: danielsard

thanks... i was wandering if it was my SK's batery that came defective or something

Posted by: Zacharias209

My SK roxs.i swith over from sprint to tmobile just to the sidekick.i love it.awesome service but when im at work i dont get any service in the store so i put it airplane mode and saves the battery big time.web is great.the instant messengers are a cool way to get in touch.over the phone is kool but besides that the screen is a little low.they could have made it brighter and the mp3 speaker.low...but it depends on the bitrate of the song clip.but if i were you get one.

Posted by: scorpio1973

I am loving my SK3! Recently, I upgraded from my SKII. Luckily, I haven't had any battery problems. I take it off the charger at about 6:30AM and I use it periodically throughout the day (phone calls, texting, emailing, web browsing). By the time I put it on the charger at night, I still have about 50% battery left.

The IM clients are great and the web browsing is faster. Overall, I am very happy. For what I use it for, it is the device for me.

For what it's worth I carried both a Treo and a Sidekick at the same time for about a year and a half. I paid for the Sidekick, my company paid for the treo, and there was no comparison. Web browsing on the treo was slow and completely craptacular, I couldn't do ANYTHING with the device until the page finished loading (which took 2-3 times longer than the SK2 ever did), typing on the Treo was an excersize in frustration, and I felt like a right fol poking at my phone with a stick to do even the most basic operations.

The fact that the sidekick multitasks as well as it does, has an excellent keyboard, and a usable UI beats the Treo in my book hands down.

Disclaimer: I am totally biased towards the SK, I'll admit. But I still can't see how the Treo can compare WRT keyboard, UI, usability, or multitasking

just got my SKIII on sunday .. I work for verizon wireless and i get a demo phone but I cant get a PDA. I have to get an additional line to get a PDA . At first i wanted the treo W .. then i was leaning towards the Moto Q but since i saw all these customers return with the Q i was like no way.. I also saw issues with the Treo with freezing and memory issues i decided to stay away even though i get the unlimted data plan for $25 plus i have to add voice i decided to go with somthing more practical and easy to use . This is my first TMO phone and so far the Kick has been good . I love the Push email and of course the instant messaging . I had the phone freeze up once which i had to power down and turn back on . The web can be a bit faster but remember im used to the EVDO speeds on the verizon PDA's . But beggers cant be choosers .. All i need is a Screen protector and im Straight. Also i went back to Tmo lastnight to check the BlackBerry Pearl looks cool but seems to small ..Ima just stick with the Kick !!

Posted by: iWonder

screen protector? www.shieldzone.com highly recommended. by usually everyone... who buys it.. I have the full front sidekick 3 shield and i have but one complaint: the silver shield part accumulates dust whereas the screen is perfect because it covers the black part. The screen only just covers the screen and not the black part of it.

Posted by: MO3iusONE

Damn thats good to know, I was watching the video review on Cnet about the Sidekick III, Their only real complain was the resolution of the screen wasnt all that. I still dont know what to do, I might just buy a different phone fro sprint or I might just get rid of sprint and go with Tmobile. I think the only main reason i dont wanna make the switch is because I'm getting a really good deal off sprint.

Posted by: iWonder

I think its okay on its highest backlight setting. No real complaints. I can understand sacraficing a thing or two for performance rather than a slowed down crappy device

Posted by: xxbrstarrxx

UPS just dropped it off today.
Pros: It's sleeker and less clumsy looking
Music Player is cool
Background themes are nice
Trackball is smooth (although you have to get used to it)
Keyboard cannot lift/peel/rub off

Cons: Ringers and Apps from SK2 are not "supported" (although rumor has it, Danger disabled many features to make more money)
MiniSD memory is way too small
Headphones are kinda wack
Camera is a little worse than SK2's
Not a huge difference with the web page downloading times (Said that EDGE makes a difference? I don't see a difference...still painstakingly slow for some pages)
Limited amount of ringers (SK2 had an abundance of standard ringers)

Overall - I didn't have a choice but to get the phone since my SK2's battery couldn't stay charged for more than 4 hours - and I couldn't get a replacement since the SK2 is discontinued (btw this is my 3rd replacement in a year - only having the faulty SK2 a whole month....)

I was content with the SK2...but I'll just have to get used to the SK3 - of course until numero cuatro comes out.

AIM - still the same to me.

I have had my SK3 for about a month and I absolutely ADORE it. My biggest complaint is the camera is garbage. My bf had a motorola v220 whose camera blew the SK3's away. I won't even insult the SK3 by comparing the camera quality to the RAZR... but I have other phones with good cameras so oh well, I can manage. I don't particularly like the orange backlighting on the keyboard. I would prefer to customize the color of the backlighting to any of the colors the little trackball thingy lights up. I use mine for messaging and web browsing only and the message alert selection sucks and IMO they just aren't loud enough. It was still worth every cent I paid for it and I actually just bought my bf a SK2 on eBay because he loved mine so much, plus we like to text all day while he is at his boring job and since tmo took away the free texts from a phone w/a sk prepaid sim it gave me a reason to buy yet another phone. If his camera on the SK2 is better than mine I am going to be pissed
Edit:
I wanted to add I haven't had a bit of probs from the battery yet.

i hate the sk3. im switching to the blackberry pearl. seems better to me

Posted by: dsky

I love the SK3.

I recently switched from the (cue Darth Vader music) Verizon, to T-Mobile. And from the LG-VX8100 to the SK3.

The multi-tasking is great, I get good coverage in my area, where Verizon struggles to hold bars. No dropped calls yet, but with Verizon it's almost a guessing game of when you can get a quality call.

Full keyboard is great, since this is my first QWERTY phone. Internet browsing is suprisingly fast, as I assume it piggy-backs off of wireless hotspots in the area.

The IM feature on the Sidekick seems thought out, and well prepared, vs. the LG's which seem Verizon made LG put the IM programs on their software.

Overall, I love it, and already a OTA update? Awesome.

Ok so how do i "train" my battery... Im new to the sidekick

Posted by: rebirth534

ota will correct the battery meter

Posted by: enjoi

I've had it for about a week now, and I really like it, except I have one complaint. The reception is horrible. I went from an SDA to this, and I'll be sitting somewhere and have full service, then all of a sudden I won't have service and it will never come back. So I have to turn airplane mode on and then off. It's really annoying. The reception just isn't consistant. I may switch to a Blackberry Pearl.

Posted by: iWonder

the update should fix that

Posted by: enjoi

I have no idea how well it's going to fix the problem, and I don't even know when I'll even receive the update. So I have no idea whether or not it will be worth it for me to wait until I do get it, or if I should just go pick up a new Pearl.

What the hell, take a spare battery with you!

The original poster stated his reason for wanting a sidekick was to stay on AIM all the time. Aren't there several apps for the Treo 650 that allow this?

Yeah, Verichat is probably the best, and probably the most expensive...$25/year. However the Treo's qwerty keyboard sucks compared to the Sidekicks.

Posted by: The Roc

the sk3 would be a truly awesome device if they would of increased the amount of memory that could be held in sms.

I mean 130 is like nothing. I have 97X right now on my 8700 and its no problem

no

(space filler here, because 'no' is the answer)

I just Got the side kick last week for $200 of some guy in my class. It was brand new. it had the clear stickers on the screen and everything. I just bought it to receive email and go on the internet. I wanted something with a keyboard so I got the prepaid plan. Its ok. I like it. at first the battery didn't last that long and I do get disconnected from the service every now and then and the internet was slow. the battery would only last about 12 hours. Now the battery has been on for over 12 hours and it has only drained 20%. I have used it for internet music and other stuff. the inrernet is actually as fast as the Ipaq on wifi. I like the sidekick 3. especially for the price I paid and the prepaid service. I also bought a 2GB memory card. I already have the k800i with cingular so the diekick is only an extra toy for me.

I love my Sidekick to pieces!

Posted by: manchuia

can we get some more updates. Specifically those that jumped ship from Sk2. How are you liking the device after all this time?

Posted by: chevyg

It Is Just Okay... I Like My DASH Alot Better

Posted by: manchuia

cant stand the keyboard on the dash (as compared to the SK lineup).. but I do like the other features.

Thinking of coming back to the SK platform for a bit (until the new communicator is announced or I find another phone I like) wondering if those that upgraded from 2 still think it's worth it? Or, to put it another way, ebay has listings for SK2 ending at under $100 and Sk3 ending at about $300. Is the 3 worth $200 more when all is said and done?

Posted by: tylerw313

If you're using the sk primarily for they keyboard, then it is debatable whether he extra 200 is worth it. If you like the rubber keys on the sk2, then obviously it's not worth it. I find typing on the sk3 to be a smoother action compared to typing on the sk2.

In terms of features, I can't say 200 bucks is really worth it. I personally don't use the mp3 player or the bluetooth, and the megapixel camera's not great. BUT, the EDGE makes a difference!
