Have a look here:

https://www.csp.t-mobile.net/rdm/?pt=TMDEUP

Step 1: Select your phone's manufacturer
Step 2: Select the settings you need (WAP, E-Mail, GPRS, MMS etc)
Step 3: Confirm the selected settings type (Bestätigen)
Step 4: Enter your phone number (i.e. +491701234567) and type in the letters displayed in the security image.

Click on Weiter.

No problem

Also, might you know the url for vodafone there as well? I may have to program these settings in manually i fear. Hopefully not.

Oh, one more thing, do you know if all gprs coverage in Germany is EDGE?

EDGE is not used in Germany by any of the 4 providers. All of them have deployed UMTS/3G as the direct successor to GPRS. So you'll get a GPRS connection if you're using a regular triband phone.

Thanks a lot Any idea on configuration settings for Vodafone there? I found out they are the only one offering UMTS where i'm moving to. Thanks for all your help

Oh and actually T-mobile rolled out EDGE this year. They are the only German carrier doing it. They are supposed to have 70% of the country covered by 2007.

Even so, UMTS is probably still better. What handset do you plan on using with Vodafone UMTS?

I'm sticking with T-Mobile as there's no UMTS by voda or T-mo where i'm gonna be but T-mo does have EDGE there so i'll stick with my D830 for a bit until someone gets UMTS there. I'll probably buy a branded UMTS handset from T-mo when i get there to use when traveling and on the trains etc.

You must be going to an isolated part of Germany then. All 4 providers have been promoting their well laid-out UMTS coverage in the last year.

Well, according to their maps they barely have 50% if that of the country covered with UMTS. I'm moving not far outside Nurnberg but there's no UMTS by anyone there, only EDGE by T-Mobile. I called Vodafone and they plan to have that area covered by years end so we'll see.

Hmmm I must say that I'm surprised to hear that. Nürnburg and the adjoining city of Fürth (kind of like twin cities since they're so close together) cover a large area. Once you leave that area, you don't have too many densely populated areas until you get to Würzburg in the north and Ingolstadt in the south.

I'm moving outside Amberg, which is very close to Nurnberg and there's no UMTS in my town. Vodafone says it will be up soon but you know how that goes.

Cologne has pretty good UMTS coverage, my phone connects to E-Plus' 3G/UMTS network most of the time. Sometimes, it will switch back to a GSM 1800 tower if the signal is too weak.
