Looking for a Quad Band WiFi phone

I did a little research here before posting this, so here goes. I'm looking for a decent WiFi phone (802.11g) with the ability to work with Cingular's network (I reside in the midwest in the US). It doesn't have to work with them but it would be a plus because that's my current provider. I have no contract though so I can cancel it any time. Also I want a qwerty keyboard as well (thumbboard). The closest thing I see to what I want is the Nokia E70. I have purchased a Nokia 9300i but it didn't have 850 GSM (it was the EGSM model) so it didn't work properly with Cingular's network.

The reason I want a WiFi phone is because I am almost always next to a WiFi hotspot, and I do not want to pay the ridiculous amounds of money Cingular wants for it's data plans. I currently have the 8mb plan but if I get a good smart phone, I am sure I would exceed that using just their data network.

So any help would be appreciated.

first off.. p990i is not quad band... second.. p990i doesn't have 802.11g only 802.11b

there are quite a few choices for quad band wifi phones depending on ur need~ if you want something cheaper like in the 400us range you could go with the qtek 9100 and run the 802.11g hack to enable the 802.11g~ but the processor is a bit weak ~ but sufficient if you use it for basic web surfing ~

I think you should wait it out for the Cingular 8525 as it will have all that and more and will be 3G.... I'm not too sure on what the 802.11g hack is, could someone explain?

Isn't Qtek 9100 essentially the same as T-Mobile MDA (and Cingular 8125)?

A few months ago, as I was choosing a smartphone, I dithered for a while between 9300i (that you are selling) and the MDA.

The MDA looked very attractive: it has quadband, and (when subsidized under a new contract) would be a lot cheaper than an unsubsidized 9300i. I also came across many horror stories about multiple daily crashes, half of the calls being dropped and the phone slowing down as more applications are installed. Someone from Windows Mobile development team posted on their blog, explaining the memory management under Windows Mobile. The essence was the the phone would unexpectedly slow down at inopportune times as some "compactor thread" managed the memory, making the phone unusable for a while.

Now, the above is hearsay - I didn't go with the MDA and was fortunate to not experience this many troubles. If you are a "power user", I suggest you look some more though. The MDA might not be good enough.

HTC TyTN *might* be better, software-wise. Being new, it however is probably outside your budget.

Why has no one mentioned the Nokia E61? It fits all of the OP's needs, with the exception of price. But seriously, the excellent Nokia UI, quadband, wi-fi (capable of 802.11g according to the specs I looked up) and full qwerty keyboard.

Who cares if it has the features the OP wants, and the looks are a matter of opinion. Besides, the HTC's are exactly deserved of beauty queen status.

Nokia E70-2. Its not HUGE and has everything your looking for and will work on Cingular.
