Syncing with Exchange Server...

This might be the wrong forum but I have a question about achieving my work emails (via Exchange Server 2003 sp2).

When setting this up in Active Sync on the phone (my 2125) it asks for the server address, username, password and domain. My question is this. I inputted all of this information in and it won't work. Thinking about it, my phone is using the internet to connect the my company's exchange server. This IP address via the internet doesn't go anywhere. It only works if I'm on the network (like VPN'd in). Is there something else I need to set-up to make this work? Wouldn't I need to connect to work's network. Am I missing something?

I'm not an IT guy so anyone that could help me out would be appreciated...there has to be someone else with these issues?

Thanks in advance

Ask you IT guy/girl and they will have to help you with it. There are a few settings that need to be changed on the server as well as a certificate that needs to be installed on your 2125

That is what I was afraid of. My IT guy was clueless. He said he was under the understanding the Exchange server was all set-up.

Anything else I can try or info I can give him?

PS: My phone is actually a frankenphone. It is a 2125, running on the latest iMate SP5 rom with a t-mobile sim.

Can you access your email through Outlook Webview?

If you can, then the address to the exchange server would be the same, possibly minus the "/exchange" at the end.

There are two possibilities as to why it is not working,

1. The Exchange Server is not accessible from outside the network.

2. The Exchange Server is not configured for Exchange Active Sync.

The first would be a configuration with your network firewall and DNS settings. If access to the Exchange Server from the outside of the network is not allowed then a VPN should be an option. I personally have no experience with VPNs so I am afraid I can not help you.

The second could be any number of issues. It could be global settings that are not configured or it could be your user account does not have the Mobile Services enabled. It could also be authentication issues.

From your post, it sounds like the problem has to do with the Exchange Servers accessibility from outside the network.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the information. You're correct with the first point. I'm able to access Webmail, but only when connected to the network or vpn'd in. I'm guessing that needs to be set-up. Unfortunately, it sounds like my phone will have to conntect to the network then sync and then disconnect. Kind of making Push email pointless. What a bummer.

Thanks.

If anyone else has a work around please let me know, thanks.

To set it up, initially activesync must be able to contact the Exchange server no matter what. Once that has been done. The phone should not have to contact the the exchange server again. It's a push service, mail is pushed from your inbox to your phone. Unless your company has internal mail only (I couldn't imagine this being true) there is nothing that needs to be done on the Exchange server, unless the Admin physically disabled the mobile service from your account.

well he already said OWA doesn't work from the outside so he can't activesync. Tell your IT guy to setup the exchange server behind the ISA server and allow outside traffic to come thru the ISA. You'd use your domain username and password and then you can log in and connect.
