Nokia 2125i from MetroPCS - User installed applications disabled?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ciper

I think that user installed applications have been disabled in firmware but I need the forums help to confirm this. Secondly if it is disabled Id like to find the workaround (without having to pay to download files).

I have been unable to copy any jar files to my phone using a ca-42 cable with both mobimb and the npc suite.

With the latest version of mobimb the application immediately crashes when you try to copy a jar file to the applications folder. Sending mid and jpg files back and forth works fine.

Using the latest version of the nokia PC suite (applicable to this phone) I can transfer ringtones/images/contacts. When trying to copy an application I get
"This application cannot be installed on the phone. The file size is too big"
Im sure this is an incorrect generic error. I used notepad to create a text file with the word test and saved it as test.jar and got the same error.

Looking forward to your help

As a second test I created a folder under my "gallery" with the name games. I tried to copy the same test.jar file created previously with notepad and got the same error.

Earlier in the day I copied the built in games to my PC. I tried to copy one of these known working java files to the gallery\games folder and got the same error message.

After renaming a known working jar file to .jr I was able to copy it to the phone. It seems firmware blocks any file with the extension jar!

PARTIAL SUCCESS!!!

I can now copy jar files to the phone and I enabled the hidden java menu item

Im trying to figure out exactly what is needed but so far I changed the following settings

872 Camera/Pictures Menu - Included
81 Download Ring Tune Menu Option (power-key) - Included
837 Inclusion of Applications (Java) Hidden Configuration Menu - Option 1 - *#JAVA# Shortcut
599 Applications (Java) Menu - Included
1068 Applications Menu Name - javam
1074 Java OTA Downloading - Enable
92 Inclusion of EVRC Menu for Call Origination via *#EVRC# - Enable

Still trying to figure out how to run the apps

It seems the Java menu only wants to read from the applications folder. Mobimb and diego can live on the same machine. You have to end task on lmmpc before starting diego though.

Mobimb keeps crashing when I try to copy a file to the applications folder so Im going to try an alternative method.

edit: I got a slightly older version of mobimb and I was able to make a second copy of one of the included java apps! Now I have 2 "sky diver" games

Everything works. I can now copy my own applications to the phone I downloaded a jar and jad of a game called Cave from midlet.org and it works! I copied the jad/jar to the applications folder and now it shows up under the java menu item.

Since this phone isnt very popular I need to find a phone of similar specifications to use as a filter when downloading applications. I was thinking the 3510i was a good choice but wanted the forums advice.

...
Im confused. When someone posts "Yo doodz giv me a copy of diego" people answer.

Thanks for all the help

Well, if it's any consolation, you've helped me with your detailed thread!

We're a Verizon bunch at the moment -- three phones so far and soon to add another -- but we're strongly considering a move from Verizon (and its CripplePhones) to MetroPCS. Your thread came up on a search on their cheapest phone ($99). Of course, this wouldn't be the forum to discuss the other aspects of moving, but it answers the question about whether it's been factory-"enhanced" to prevent running "unauthorized" software. Thanks!

well i wish i could access some of that unauthorized software....i can maybe start enjoying this darn phone.....if nokia included the capabilities and made them accessable then that's just what they wanted the customer to enjoy.

RobertB: 99$ seems like alot. I was able to find my 2125 for 50$. I got the 45$ plan so combined with the "first month free" deal my phone was basically free.

liquid_3_5_7: Are you trying to find a copy of diego?

Well, the decision was sort of made for me. I live in a rural area which turns out to be about 10 miles outside the MetroPCS local calling area. So much for that idea!

I'm testing out a T-Mobile phone with the $40 300-minute myFaves plan (plus $5 for txting), and considering the cheap but strings-aplenty $20 KidConnect plan for the kid (though 40c/min is pretty ridiculous). But that's a discussion for another forum.

If you plan to use the phone in your house I bet you could get 3-4 bars of signal with home made directional antenna. Most of the DIY antenna cost less than 20$ in materials to make, the most expensive part being the cable.

Hi Ciper... I have a MetroPCS 2125i and all I want is to get some free ringtones on it. Is that possible without the data cable? I think MetroPCS is ripping us off with their crappy ringtones for $1.00 each.

And if the data cable is necessary do I need to make any modifications in order to transfer ringtones to my phone from my PC?

TIA for any help

Bonnie

ciper / BonnieOsvany,

Greetings and welcome to HoFo.

1. There is little to do with 2125i but downloading the ringtones of your choices DOES require the intervention of Nokia PSTs like Diego... PRI ID 1111: RD Settings > NAM > PC Suite > MIDI Ring Tune Downloading > Enable After that, try Nokia PC Suite to load the ringtones.

However, even without not-for-the-public Diego's intervention and the flaky PC Suite, you can simply get the program, MobiMB from LogoManager. I have using the LogoManager products for years and because I have many Nokia handsets, so I do not mind to keep paying for the license subscription. To me, it worths for every penny. If you still encounter problem with older MobiMB that could not recognize 2125i, try...

http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=770302

So, when everything is set, open MobiMB, check the File > Settings / Preferences > Connections if DKU-5 and the corresponding port. If not add one. Then in the Media Browser, Open the Gallery > Tones Try copy and paste the MIDI tones into your 2125i. Just a reminder, it cannot deal with MIDI files with size bigger than 15kB.

As for the question of both Diego and MobiMB "exists" on the same computer, I do have any problem. Just that I will not run both at the same time. Also, I do not know if problem may arise if you have the older / cracked versions of both / either program(s). Mine are not.

2. You do need a ORIGINAL Nokia DKU-5 data cable to deal with the Nokia PSTs like Diego or Phoenix. The ORIGINAL Nokia CA-42 does not work with Diego. Some knock-off CA-42 on the markets may work because many of them are copying the DKU-5. For more explanations, read the Nokia Connectivity / Data cables FAQ... http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=832865

3. I think asking or posting for the link or the programs in sensitive nature, like Diego, is NOT appropriate at HoFo... http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=968187 If you do not have the access to them and yet you still want them, try find them elsewhere. Many could do it in just minutes.

Hi Ciper! Thank you for opening this thread, lots of useful information for all owners of this model!
May I ask you, please how did you enable this "hidden java menu"? I'm like crazy trying to make some java apps run, and if you could tell us what you did, that would help a lot!

At the moment I'm using a DKU-5 cable with Nokia PC Suite and can transfer everything except those java apps.

Thank you!
