Recommended PPC/WM5 applications for the 8525/TyTN

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: gravejoker

Guys
I had compiled a list of applications that I would get for the 8525/TyTN when I eventually get it. I also noticed that a lot of newbies had no idea regarding which softwares to get for what etc .. even for generic WM5 phones ..

So, I decided to post this list in the hope that this can help all the newbies out there.

Let me know if you guys think this list is useful.

Posted by: berdinkerdickle

Cool, Thanks

Looks like the Mods should make this a sticky .. I'm posting this thread's link some many times these days ..

eagle1 can you elaborate on how the TomTom GPS works on your TyTN? Do you have a seperate GPS device connected to the TyTN to attain this functionality? If so, what do you recommend?

The TyTN doesnt have an inbuilt GPS .. So, you need a separate GPS device to connect to your TyTN ...

Here's what's on my 8125 already. And I've only JUST started. I plan on using most of this on the 8525 when I get one.

1. Slingbox Mobile (OMG, you're missing out if you don't have this.)
2. SirisCE
3. Bookmark in PocketIE: http://www.musicdock.com/ (XM radio, no SW needed)
4. Palm Traffic
5. Resco Explorer (w/ registry editor and today plug-in)
6. Opera Mobile
7. Opera Mini (MIDlet)
8. Google Maps (MIDlet)
9. Yahoo! Go (Sync contacts, Calendar, Mail with yahoo) Because I Yahoo!
10. Cingular XPress Mail (Sync Calendar, Mail with Outlook) The only way I can get work email.

And appied the following registry hacks from:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...M5_Tweaks_Other
#3, #7, #8 are the most important ones IMO. Using Resco Registry Editor to do these.

1. Add a 'Disconnect' button (and Timer) to the Connection List for GPRS
2. Disable the security warning when installing non-certified application
3. Show slide-out keyboard caps/dot icon next to SIP
4. Disable the SMS Sent notification
5. Navigate PIE up/down with the four-way pad
6. Show Tomorrow's Appointments on Calendar Today item
7. Show Wireless Today item
8. Add time sync page to Phone Settings

As I said, I've just gotten started (Had my 8125 only 4 days.) This is my bare bones set-up!

Also, #5, Opera Mini. This one is the best for browsing HoFo and other intensive sites since it does an off-line munging of the page, so browsing is snappy. Oper Mobile, while great, I find I don't usually need it since Pocket IE so so good (and I can sync my bookmarks with IE on XP.)

Awesome list RF9 ... Thanks ... Do you have issues running Java Midlet programs?

What about some nice games, guys? ...

Posted by: robothero

It's unfortunate, but my company runs Domino/Notes. What program should I be looking to use to sync up with them on my TyTN?

Posted by: eagle1

There is a notes connector for MS Outlook, but as usual it has some down sides and some advantages...

Posted by: RF9

I just checked the Cingular XPress mail page:
"Access your work email including Microsoft® Outlook and Lotus® Notes®, pushed automatically to your device."
I think this means it's supposed to work for your sever, doesn't it?
http://www.cingular.com/sbusiness/xpress_mail_personal
I use XPress mail PE, I have for a couple of years with the Treo 650, and now the Cingular 8125.
Xpress mail DOES NOT SYNC with Palm or WM5 PDAs. It will not sync calendar, contacts, notes, todo, mail.
What it does is install it's own calendar and sync with it's own calendar. It also creates an "account" in outlook and syncs with that account (inbox only.) It'll sync at specified intervals or you can put it in "push" mode which sort of works, depending.
The biggest down side is tha personal edition requires you to run a program on a PC in the company and leave it running 24/7. it must be running to redirect mail out of the comany to your phone. But I have a PC I can run that on, so it's no problem. Also sometimes it loses connection to the cingular server so you can't sync up with it for a few minutes until it re-establishes connection.
I'm just saying this is one alternative if the notes connector mentioned above doesn't work out. There might be other 3rd party apps out there. Is http://www.intellisync.com/ still in this business?

If you want xpress mail, just got to http://xpressmailpe.cingular.com/ and register. It's free to use (you just have to have an unlmited data plan to cover data charges.)

So far it's working pretty well. Google maps is a little touchy, but Opera Mini is working VERY well.
It's such a refreshing change from the Treo where Java Midlet apps would crash the thing in a matter of minutes, especially opera mini. This is one reason I got so fed up with it I got the 8125 until the 8525 drops.

There is only 1 bug that's a minor annoyance:
-Open Midlet manager
-Start opera mini
-Enter a URL and select menu>go
-*It returns back to the midlet manager*
-Just click the opera mini icon again and you return back to opera mini, no more problems.
For some reason the midlet manager window is popping to the foreground when you start a networking session. It does this in google maps also.

Opera mini really is cool. It's so much faster for web browsing. It's not perfect for all sites, but if you're just browsing forums like HoFo where you want to do a lot of page clicks, it's nice.

I also found one site that works on opera MOBILE that didn't work so well in IE. Prior to this I was wondering why I kept Opera Mobile around, but it just showed me it has value.
So 3 web browsers, and I use all 3.
I haven't even looked in to games yet. I haven't gotten that far.

Here are a couple of apps I missed from my list and additions since my post:
11) Pocket Stars (on Handango) (SO COOL!)
12) Hitchhiker (on Handango) (for wifi) (still checking this out)
13) SPB Pocket Plus (Swiss army knife, quickly becoming a must have) Especially since you can add things like close, close all, and soft-reset to menus, etc. Also enhancements to IE and other things.
14) SPB Weather Nice, but I'm going to check out other weather apps too.
15) SPB Diary I'm not sure I like this. I think I'll dump this one.
16) SmartSkey and OmapClock (ESSENTIAL)
17) MS Today Screen Themes (FREE!!) I like the green one.
18) TCPMP (The core pocket media player) (FREE)

Yeah..I don't really use mini to do that. I use IE. Mini is for casual web browsing.

I've been workign up a similiar list in anticipation of buying a tytn or treo (if they add wifi to the US release) later this year. It's mostly notes for me, so it may be a bit tricky to understand some of them. I've used a handful of the programs on my POS hx2400 hence the references to having had problems. The listed features are unique features within a category, so that there is no repeating of the same feature. For example, pocketbreeze and Diary 2 both have tasks tabs on the today screen, so that feature isn't mentioned. And I haven't done the free software and hacks list yet, it's a rather daunting idea.

SPB Pocket Plus - various usability/today plugins
depends on speed and end usefulness
needs serious trying out

SBSH iLauncher - Various Today plugins
does 'speed dialing' by default
top indicator can be changed (mem, bat, etc)

SPB Diary - PIM on Today plugin
speed dependant
photo contacts
action and hold (tap and hold hardware)

SBSH PocketBreeze - PIM on Today plugin
popup integration
drag and drop support

Pocket Informant - PIM replacement
appointments for time zones
contact summary phone logs
live preview window
exchange GAL support
drag and drop support

Agenda Fusion 8 - PIM replacement
mostly untested
said to be good for contact info
dual reminders for appointments

Photo Contacts PRO - Contact/Phone manager
filtering
photo speed dial
contact ringtones
profiles
Full screen photo caller ID

.mobile Contacts - Contacts manager
had problems 'taking over' contacts on last test
finger drag scrolling
caller categories
contact/call quick reminders

Contact-ing - Today contact plugin
supports all of contacts
letter tab seperation and scrolling

Inesoft Address Book
fullscreen caller id with silencing
t9 ABC bar
insert number seperation dashing

Auto SMS Reply - SMS w/ call reaction
prompt after missed call (treo like)
profiles

phoneAlarm - phone on Today/plugin
profiles - time switching, auto connection based
sms/miss call/mail/etc indicators
alarms (bat, signal)
muting
bluetooth/wlan/phone control
10 number redial
task management
billing calc/GPRS calc
location profile changing (???)

SPB GPRS Monitor - data usage
percent of alotment used
daily/monthly data amount
task bar icon
notifications

Any suggestion for Mobile AIM?

Posted by: GuyInFrisco415

Hey guys,
Are these apps free? Also is Opera Mobile better then IE?
I find when I checkout my page on myspace I cant see my background wallpaper and cant see my pictures in flash mode, any suggestions what I need to download?
Thanks in advance..

Posted by: epod86

None of the ones in my list are free apps. Essentially, I went on handango and looked through the most downloaded apps. I find thats a good place to start. Then I went through the different categories, although I find these mostly useless because the categorization is pretty ambigious when you're just looking for the 'must have' apps and aren't sure what specifically you're looking for. I've put my lists on hold, life is taking over my hobbies at the moment. A handful of the other apps I remember from browsing this forum and maybe one or two I found by sorting through my 'dump folder' in my browser favorites. Which reminds me, I need to sort through that...one of these days.

When in doubt make a list, you'll never remember everything all at once.

Posted by: nutnbolt

These applications is enough to drive you crazy. I don't mind spending money on applications but it has to be good and useful.

6 of one, half dozen of the other. I would say that in general Opera Mobile is better than IE. Rather it works with javascript and dynamic coding on more web sites than on IE. If there's a complicated web page with a lof drop downs and stuff, Opera can handle it when IE can't.
But IE is faster than Opera mobile. IE can/will download more than 1 image at a time, Opera does it in serial.
I use IE most of the time, and just use Opera Mobile when I run in to a site that doesn't work well on IE. Minly because the 'favorites' in IE sync with the desktop and i manage them that way.
Opera Mini is free. Opera mini is a java Midlet. It's totally different. The Opera server downloads the web page and optomizes it for mobile viewing. Then it's downloaded (in much reduced size) to the phone.
I tend to use Opera Mini quite a lot because once it "processes" a page (which takes a few seconds) the download is very fast. It will pretty much chew through any complicated site, reduce extraneous spacing, scrunch things down, and make them fit in to a single column page.
It's great for general "web browsing." I also find it's the fastest thing to browse through howard forums. But it's limited to text entry so it doesn't work so well to respond to posts if your response will long.

Access Netfront is supposed to be "The Best" browser out there for WM5. I haven't had the time this week to download and play with it. I shouldn't even be on here.

Resco Pocket Radio, for listening to internet streaming radio. I used to have it on my Ipaq but could only use it where I found wifi. But now I can listen anywhere. Music, NPR, sports. Who needs an Ipod?

http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/radio/default.asp

Posted by: Argon4k

With regards to the MusicDock site, what email are they asking for? I found another site (http://www.xstreamxm.com) that does the same type of thing but on both sites, I can't figure out what email they want. When I go up to XM's website I can login using the email and password just fine but that same email doesn't work with these two sites. Any suggestions?

I saw it once before when the 8125 came out, but i can't find it anymore... anyone know where to find the pocket money program? i'm expecting to get my 8525 sometime this week. I use the money program on my PC at the end of (almost) everyday, if not week. And using this on my device would be very helpful for me.

And just out of curiosity, for a messenger program, if Agile is a paid program now, is there any thing out there that is or would emulate the AIM client from a sidekick for a device like this?

And anyone have or tried any emulating for games on this?

sorry, this was kind of off topic.

Thanx in advance!

Posted by: MHC48

serkle, technically MS never updated Pocket Money for WM 5 and many people supposedly had problems with it. I tried it, and didn't have any problems with it on my Ipaq running WM5. I just didn't care for it too much. Far too simplistic. If you want to try, it's here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en

I far prefer SPB Finance, for its functionality and features. It will export and synchronize to the full versions of MS Money and Quicken.

Posted by: serkle k

^^ for future reference, is there a link for the SPB? is it a program or a type of registry hack/edit?

I'm still to all this and trying to get some knowledge before i have the device.

Got a quick question.

I tried using Pocket Informant and it has more stuff than I need. The only thing I want to use from it is the way it organizes and presents the call logs for contacts. Is there anyway to just use it's contact feature as default or is there another program I can use that provides some of the same features?
Thanks.

Posted by: nutnbolt

You can try contactbreeze or SPB pocketday/diary

I have been lurking for a while. In fact, last weekend I bought the 8525, after using my Treo 650 for two years. I have been doing a lot of reading. I would be interested in anybody's opinion about Pocket Plus versus PocketBreeze. I know, I will find out for myself by trying both. But just wanted to see if anybody had tried both and what they think. Thanks.

Posted by: gravejoker

I have tried both and actually bot both (for different purposes) .. both have their quirkinesses ... see which one you like and buy that ... SBSH softwares like PB is typically cheaper than SPB PP ..

My First post. My 8525 is supposed to arrive tomorrow (don't want to get my hopes up), and am more excited than ever after reading these posts. Can't wait to start installing!

Awesome lists. Thank you. Are there applications that you can use to record phone calls? I haven't had time to try everything out that's on there already, but I think there's a voice recorder. Would it do the trick? Also, an application that would turn off the sound for only a specific period of time, so that I could have the device wake me up with an alarm? Finally, it looks like it will only take a mini-SD card. Am I right? I'd like to know if I can get an SD card to make it into a GPS device.

Thanks...

Posted by: gravejoker

For call recording you can try http://www.softtrends.com/products/...livepvrwmsp.htm ... I really need to update my list now ...

Posted by: Playstation3

Cool, thanks...Can it be used for "on-demand" recording as well? Meaning starting and stopping the recording whenever the users wants to? Or is it only the entire phone call?

Posted by: gravejoker

I havent really used it yet .. so wont be able to answer that ... Try it out and see how it goes ..

Posted by: Dillsnik

when installing these programs, do you go to a download page on your phone, or d/l to comp first?

Posted by: gravejoker

can do anything ..

a. if it's a desktop installer .. download it on your desktop, connect via ActiveSync and run that installer
b. if it's a CAB .. you can either download in your desktop, copy it to the phone and then run that cab on the phone or directly download it on the phone .. then need to run that cab on the phone.

Nice list.

The want the email and password that you use for the XM Radio Online Player, not the one you use to actually log onto your account.

It's not really a matter of how many apps can the phone hold. It's more of, how fast or slow do you want your device to run? The limitation of apps on a device really is the storage space on the SD card which is something you need to add as an accessory if you haven't done so. There are some apps (very few nowadays) that still has to be stored on memory but I have over 25 apps on my SD card, including apps that runs on the todays screen and have very little problems. My devices isn't as snappy as most devices out there with the bland today screen but it's fast enough.
