Size limit for mp3 ringtones on 8300?

Thus far I've been content to use other people's tones provided graciously by other members here however I figure what the heck I have bitpim and I might as well give it a shot.
Just wondering if there is a file size limit to how big the file can be for a ringtone on my 8300?
Also what have people found are the best sample rates and bitrates for ringtones? 22050 and 64kb; 44100 and 128; something in between; higher or lower?
Also any big deal with mono vs stereo?
