alternate wap access

my friend has a kx5 remix through virginmobile. i know that if u use the wap browser right out, u get charged from virgin mobile. if he was to change his default gateway to another one, say.... waptunnel for instance, would that be getting around the virgin mobile charging system?? and if so, how would he go about changing this??
