P990i+M600i FAQ & Tips/Tricks

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

Hello all,

I believe we now have quite a few (well by UIQ HoFo standards) owners of the M600i + P990i. So I felt that this would be a good time to consolidate various pertient information about these devices and UIQ3 in general. I hope that this thread will be useful to new purchasers of this device as well as potential purchasers. I learn something new almost everyday @ HoFo, so I think we can benefit from other owners.

The P910/P900 owners really filled this forum with very useful information. I'm sure we can do the same, considering that there are now two UIQ devices with a third on it's way. (And possibly many more!). I guess we can add the information for the W950i when it's released ? I have a feeling that it will be the most popular UIQ3 device because it has true mainstream appeal.
I realize that HoFo gets visitors from all over the world but we do have a definite North American slant (as it is a Canadian forum that draws mainly North American posters). So, apologies to the non-NA users if the slant is a bit too much.

I'm not sure how this thread is going to work, but I'm not overtly protective or have any set rules. My only aim is to make this thread a clear, concise source of information for UIQ3 and the P990/M600 devices. Any advice on how to best go about this ?

I'll be adding information daily, so don't expect a wealth of information from the start. Plus, I am hoping that others can contribute.

As well, I am by no means an expert. So if I posted something that isn't quite correct or is flat out wrong, please let me know.

UIQ3 FAQ

1.) What is UIQ ?

UIQ (User Interface Quartz) is basically a GUI that provides additional functionality to the basic OS of the phone. The OS in this case is Symbian 9.X. Symbian OS is used primarily in Nokia smartphones. The Nokia smartphones (E + N series for example) use a GUI known as S60. S60 provides a non-pen input (touchscreen) user interface, while UIQ provides a combination of touchscreen and non-touchscreen.

2.) What is the current version of UIQ ?
The current vesion of UIQ is UIQ3.0. The current devices that employ UIQ3 include the P990 (and all it's variants), the M600 (and all it's variants) and the W950 (and all it's variants). As of October 6th, 2006 - only the P990 and M600 have been released.

3.) What is the compatibility between UIQ3 and previous versions of UIQ ?

There is no compatibility between the two. You cannot upgrade an older UIQ device, like the P910 (uses UIQ2.x) to UIQ3.

4.) Can I use UIQ2.x software on UIQ3 devices ?

NOPE!

5.) What are the benefits/advantages of UIQ vs S60 vs Windows Mobile ?

There is no definitive answer for this question, it all depends on your needs and usage. Your best bet to get an answer that is relative to your needs/usage is to describe your needs/usage and generate an answer from that.

6.) Do any other manufacturers use UIQ ?

Sony Ericsson is the only manufacturer to use UIQ3 currently.
Motorola and Nokia released a few devices using the UIQ2.x platform but they have not made any announcements for a UIQ3 device.

7.) Where can I find UIQ3 software ?

You can find software here:

P990i software:
http://shop.my-symbian.com/Platform...rmId=4&osId=856

M600i software:
http://shop.my-symbian.com/Platform...rmId=4&osId=866

I have only linked to the the my-symbian store because it uses Handango (as do most other UIQ software stores) but it is the store IMO that has the best layout.

Please note that while 95% of software that is made for the M600 can be used on the P990 and vice versa, please check to ensure that the software is supported by your device. (i.e. don't buy software for the M600 and assume it will work on your P990). There are a few subtle differences between the two UIQ3 platforms on the P990 and M600. They are mainly related to navigation (as the hardware on the two devices is a tad different), but it doesn't hurt to check.

Please Go right ahead! No workarounds have been covered yet, yours can be the first. I haven't added anything yet because it was the holiday weekend, but I'll add some stuff on Monday.

It can seem that way, but t depends on how many programs are running in the background. When I know I want too surf I end a programs and start fresh with just the browser. Annoying but effective. To tell you the truth I also did this with my K-jam, Internet is such a memeory hog, when using it, it should be the only program open.

Posted by: LaughingBandit

i'll keep that in mind. thanks.
One other thing. The thing I always liked about SEs my T68i, and then my K700i, were the PROFILES! They're GONE!!!! One of the BEST features, and available (as far as I know) ONLY on SEs! PLEASE tell me I'm wrong.

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

Profiles do not exist on the P990 and have not existed on previous P series.

There is third party software on the way (Magic Profiles Pro). This software is much more powerful and functional that the basic profile setting on regualr SE phones.

An update to my contributions to this thread will be coming today.

It's not released yet. It's slated for a fall 2006 release which means they have about 6 more weeks before we hit winter.

Here's a link to the UIQ2 version, so you can get a better sense of what this program can do.

I'm going to ask a dumb question. WHAT THE HECK DOES FLIGHT MODE DO?!

Turns off the GSM 900/1800/1900 and UMTS so you can use the phone whilst on a flight. Although the number of airline staff who give you looks you may not want to risk it.

@artesea......i've been enlightened. thanks mate

ps. best to go into Tools -> Control panel -> Device -> Flight mode and untick the box, this way you don't get promted everytime you turn your phone on or off.
If you ever need to get into flight mode, just hit the signal icon then press the Flight Mode button

Posted by: LaughingBandit

@artesea....yeah, i figured out how to switch off the prompt....just had no clue what a 'flight mode' was. heh. P-series noob. thanks mate.

~LB

Posted by: Wrk_InProgress

Just to clarify, flight mode is also useful if you don't plan to use the phone's radio but would like still like to listen to music or use the PDA features. Switching to flight mode reduces battery usage.

P990 Tips and Tricks:

1.) To increase the speed of the UI, there is a work-around to remove the "animations" or "transitions". Notice that when you click on an icon from the standby screen, it fades out as it moves towards you. After this effect, the screen changes to the icon menu you just selected. This is just one of the many effects that makes the UI seem slower than it should be. To get rid of these transitions, open any video in the video player and let the video run for atleast two seconds. Now go back and try clicking on one of the four icons in the standby view again.

Look at how fast the UI can be!

Unfortunately you must keep the video player open at all times to experience this fast UI.

Note: In the W950 it appears there is an option to turn these animations off (in the Control Panel), hopefully this option will be added to the P990

2.) To increase overall performance and system stability, you can turn off the handwritting recognition feature from control panel -> device -> text input.

3.) To access the menu of a specific program or "menu" (Entertainment, Tools, etc) without touching the screen - hit the ALT key and then the "UP/MENU" key (the left most key on the bottom row)

4.) A free third party task manager called Swiss Manager is available. It has more features and is more effective than the built in third party manager.

You can download it here: http://cellphonesoft.com/

Please note that there is also a version of Swiss Manager that you have to purchase (Swiss Manager Pro) that has added functionality.

Hi;
I have a SE M600i mobile phone. I was trying to create my own theme using SE Theme Creator.
However, after i install it on my phone, its crashed and i had to switch it on and off.

Now, all i get is the vodafone logo at startup and nothing else. My phone is frozen and not working anymore!

Im going crazy! Anyone knows how to solve this issue?

There is a shortcut key for master formatting Nokia symbian phones (pressing *,3,yes button and on off button at the same time.)

I was wondering if there is any shor cuts for SE Symbian phones as well to format it. That may solve my problem bur i dunno how to do it!

Please help me...

Thanks...

Use the Sony Ericsson Update Service. This will flash the phone and should solve the problem. (Although all personal data will be lost)

What is a2dp?

It stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile. Here is a brief description about a2dp:

What is A2DP?

A2DP technology is a new music revolution allowing you to send CD quality stereo music from one device to another without wires. A2DP is stereo music sent over Bluetooth without the hassle of plugging cables. Bluetooth Wireless Technology with A2DP technology makes mobile phones, pda’s and computers capable of streaming music directly to products such as the
X5 Stereo Headset or the Sonic Portable Speakers.

The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) is just one of the modes available for Bluetooth technology.

Can my mobile phone or PDA stream stereo music directly to the
X5 Headset or the Sonic Speakers?

Yes, if your phone has A2DP you can send music without wires to our Sonic portable speakers and X5 Stereo headset. Check below to see
if your device is listed. New devices are often being released that include A2DP so also check our website for an updated list. New ROM upgrades are available for PDAs which may include A2DP.

Alternatively there are third-party applications and programs available for Windows Mobile and Palm devices that enable A2DP. This information will be made available on our website as it comes to hand...

What if my Bluetooth phone does not have A2DP?

You will still be able to use the Bluetooth handsfree functions of the X5 and Sonic with your mobile phone while streaming music from a PC. When a call comes in, the music will stop and you can answer the call. To enable your computer to have A2DP, use the external Bluetooth USB Dongle that comes with the Sonic …or the audio streamer that comes with the X5.

Though many devices already come with A2DP, for the X5 you can A2DP enable any audio device (TV, DVD, PC or Mac, Stereo, MP3 player, iPod etc) using our included “A2DP streamer”.

See my previous post for a full list of the latest devices supporting A2DP.

Tips from my-symbian.com posted by "ivc"

Here's a small list of things I've found to enhance or make the P990 more useful and more practical.

Tips and tricks:

1. Disable handwriting recogniztion for snappier interface
2. Select 'Large cache' in Opera
3. To enable flash light in video capturing mode, enable light in picture mode, hold shutterbutton halfway, turn jog-dial to video mode
4. Enable USB file transfer in 'Connections' to allow fast file copy over USB cable
5. Set Opera zoom to 80% for overview and clear text
6. If software update fails, try deleting blob_fs folder and install latest Java client, update will erase everything on the phone memory
7. Set camera picture quality to 'Fine'
8. Mute camera shutter sound
9. Limit backlight brightness to 25-80%
10. Disable wlan and 3G network support when not needed in 'Mobile networks' and 'WLAN' menus respectively
11. Calibrate the touch screen using the 'Setup wizard'
12. Turn off GPRS to disable continous GPRS signal search, will still work and turn on when needed (i.e MMS), found in 'Internet Accounts', 'More', 'Options' and 'CS Only'
13. To enter service menu, flip closed: jog-dial up, *, down, down, *, down, * - flip open/removed: in phone application, jog-dial up, touch *, down, down, *, down, *
