My W850 Review:

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: hybrid.09

I had the chances to get my hands on Sony Ericsson's brand new W850i Walkman phone. Some or many of you know, I love Sony Ericsson, that coming from a person who's first phone was a Motorola V300, it means a lot. Through the years, I have played around with a lot of Sony Ericsson's, and let me tell you this, they make amazing phones.

Long story short, I want to come up with a review, to explain how I feel using this phone. Even for those who don't like reading reviews, think that It's just my opinion; I'm trying to help out people with choosing this phone. Also, I know brownmin, one of my close friends has done a review, but I want to take a more in depth approach to this review (with lots of my sexy picstures). Being said my first review, let's get started shall we?

I will be covering many things in this review, from basics, to in-depth, so bare with me as I'm trying to do the best job of explaining this phone to others as this is my first time writing a review, and I'd like to thank Treatz for basing my review off of his style reviews.

I will be covering the following, and more in this review:
_________________________________________________________

Reception

Being a Sony Ericsson user, I have experienced a lot of phones with different kind of features, some with great reception, some with poor. But let me tell you this, this phone, is amazing. Screw the 850, it does great without it, when in a basement, no dropped calls, no noise/disruption, everything is knock on wood. So in the evolution of non-850 Sony Ericsson's, this is a great choice.

This phone's reception impressed me a lot. I did a couple tests, outdoors, indoors, and in the basment (best place for you 40 year olds ) The first test I did while walking, great quality, no disruption, no dropped calls, everything was steady and great, even full bars. The next test was indoors, this test was again a great test, very good reception with no problems what so ever. The last test was in the basement, I still got very good reception, almost full bars, and still no problems with dropped calls or distortion, so A+ on the reception part of the W850i.

What I was amazed about, is when compared to the W810i (850 + EDGE), it was on-par with the W850, almost exact reception, and I thought the W850 got even better quality.

If you want a great phone, with great call quality and reception, even though lacking the 850 band, this is a winner

Sound Quality

Incoming
The W850 has great incoming sound, pretty much in-par with other phones, but the W850 seems to be louder than my W810 and K800, which is a good thing for those who are complaining about low sound with they're handsets.

Outgoing
The outgoing sound is good aswell, as this time the mic isn't in front of your mouth, but a bit further. When testings calls, I have found that it's very clear, people can hear me well, and no static/noise/disruption in the calls. I remember recieiving a call from a friend via W600i and for some reason it sounded terrible, like I seriously mean terrible. W600's are known for having great sound, guess that one was a bad apple.

Camera

The camera, well let's keep the details short. The W850 packs a nice 2MP camera; but what's that hybrid? No AF (Auto Focus) or Macro? What gives?

Yes. Sony Ericsson has failed us this time by not incorporating AF, Macro, and Zoom in this lovely handset, but like brownmin said, I'd rather the MP3 over the Camera anyday. But I have a different take on that. Since I love photography, and take beautiful superb shots with camera phone such as my W810 and K800, I would want a camera that atleast has AF, and macro would be even more of a +

But not this phone, so If you want a great camera, W850 will do the job decently, but not as well as K750, W800, W810, etc.

Basically when using the camera, you have all the basic settings (Video Camera, Shoot Mode, Picture Size, Night Mode, Light, Self-Timer, Effects, White Balance, Picture Quality, Shutter Sound, Time and Date, Reset File Number, Save to) But in the W850, you have an option to select the picture size by keypad (by pressing 1 you choose either VGA, 1MP, or 2MP)

Like other SE handsets, night mode is toggled by pressing 7, and the light is toggled by pressing *

Here are some examples of pictures taken with the W850:

Specs

The W850's specs are as follows:
Triband GSM/900/1800/1900
GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps
Bluetooth 2.0
16MB shared memory
1GB memory card
IR
Fastport charging/USB cable
2 Megapixel camera
240x320 265k screen, viewable in direct sunlight
40 Chord polyphonic
MP3, AAC
116Grams/4.09oz weight

The thing that I find kind of odd is how they kept the Memory Stick Pro Duo interface with the W850 which is a new phone, but are using M2 cards in other models (W300, K800)

Aesthetics

This phone is very sexy, yes sexy, you heard me. When you first see this phone, it's amazing, you'll never know it's a slider, and the colour of it is nice too. I like the way they made the chrome back plate when you slide, and the back plate and front, very appealing and sleek looking.

If white just isn't your thing, the phone is available in Precious Black aswell.

Screen

The screen on the W850 is nice, lots of colours, sharp, and visible in sunlight, but not as bright as a W810 or a K800.

Keypad

The keypad is very nice on the W850, though has a nice soft plastic feel to it. When dark, it glows snow white, and on the actual front, when in Walkman mode, all the buttons on the front are lit up orange, when out of Walkman mode, it's snow white. Very nice

What I like the most about the keypad is that is is nice and big, has space inbetween the buttons, so you don't feel that your fingers are being squished like some SE handsets. This keypad is sort of based on the W810/W300 keypad, but nicer, I find it comfortable when text messaging or dialing numbers

The front keypad is very nice. It is different, no joystick, or d-pad, but sort of a nice touch keypad. I like how you don't have to squeeze so hard to break the phone, and that's it's not too sensitive; I also like how it's been made sort of the K800, with the back, C, web, and shortcut buttons. Most of all I find great is the Walkman button, instead of the usual orange W symbol, the W850 has a orange line that lights up, when pressed it activates Walkman mode and then the whole front keypad lights orange, very nice.

Menu

Ah, the traditional standard menu. This menu is basically the same through the newer Sony Ericsson's. If you know how to use one Sony Ericsson, you'll now how to use the rest (except the UIQ phones that is )

The W850 has two themes, the standard "Walkman" theme, and a theme called "Grouped". The theme called Grouped is sort of the W810 equivalent of Orbit, a very nice flash menu that rotates when under a sub-category and make the vibrate everything changed.

I have had some time to explore through the W850, and have found some features I have not seen on other handsets. But I won't spoil that and get to it later

SMS

I'm going to have to quote Treatz on this, as he is totally correct.

What else I have found great about some recent SE phones is the availability of sending SMS's in the background (sending an SMS, then pressing back until the front screen, with the message still being sent, not canceled )

Build Quality

The W850 has a nice build, knock on wood. Not one of those sliders that you barely touch and it's already open, but a great solid slider.

Gaming

Lot's of MP3's, yeah you'll listen to them, but what else is great? Games! Yes games, the great thing about them, is that they're still JAVA based games, the bad thing; 240x320. Meaning If you've previously owned a K750/W800/W810, you'll have to find new games to fit a new resolution, unless you want them to look weird.

There are 3 games that come stock with the W850. Juiced, QuadraPop, and Treasure Towers. These are ok, but I only wish SE's would come preloaded with more better games, not saying racing cars isn't fun

Basically it's the same way playing games, not much has changed. What I like though, is the Bluetooth multiplayer games, for K800 users who have done this, you'll know what I mean. F-U... N? Yeah, it's plenty of fun.

Walkman / Radio

Another Walkman phone. Well it does the basic things of playing songs; but taken to another level. This Walkman UI I like, it makes me want to use the phone to listen to songs rather than using an MP3 player. Let me tell you, the new Walkman UI is very nice. Featuring a new way to browse your media, being able to have album art in your songs are pretty cool, a definite +

Like other Walkman phones, the W850 supports MP3 and AAC file formats.

The sound on this bad boy is great, the speaker is amazing! Crisp, clear, and LOUD sound. Yes loud, that's a first

The W850 comes with HPM-70's, probably the best earbud's I've ever used, and a 3.5mm adaptor incase you don't want the awesome earbuds, (i.e. using headphones)

What I did notice in the W850, is that no longer does it have Videos in the Walkman mode. I think that now they realized Walkman = Music, and Videos =/= Music. Eh? But who cares about videos? Back to music shall we.

What I like most about this W850, is like a funlight type of keypad, where like I've stated before, when in Walkman mode, the front keypad lights up orange. But let's take this to another level. Sony Ericsson has made a new feature, it is called Light Effects. What does this do you ask? Well, here is an animated .GIF of what it does, pretty cool.

It basically strobes by the pattern of the music, even though the screen won't be on all the time, it's pretty cool for the 10 seconds it lasts

Also what's new with the W850 Walkman interface, is a new way to browse through music; from a nice sleek menu.

Another feature that I haven't seen on other SE handset's, is the new TrackID feature. This feature allows you to identify music from either the FM radio, or an external music source, and it sends it over the internet, and then you'll recieve the song title, artist, and album name, if available.

Pretty cool new feature, but don't want to test it out because I don't have a data account, and does want to pay extra monies.

The radio. The radio has stayed the same, pretty much old boring radio but just looks nicer, supports Stereo sound, RDS, and AF.

Ratings
Great phone, very well built. What I don't like about the phone is the camera and the screen. If the camera had macro and auto-focus, I would sell my K800 to get this, but it doesn't hopefully they might remake the phone with those features in the future (hopefully atleast another good slider) The screen was okay, just I guess not as bright as my W810 or K800.

Overall, a good choice for a person that would prefer music over a camera. The camera isn't horrible, but I think SE could have done a better job.

Feel free to ask any questions about the phone, and I'll be glad to help

Sorry for the delay, I sort of was ...banned

Pretty nice review!!!

Welcome back from your ban!

Dude, please for god sakes unquote the whole review from your post!

Posted by: DJ Teknosys

Thanks for the review. I'm buying one tomorrow assuming the store gets their shipment of black units in.

I do have one question. When fast forwarding a long track, does it still take FOREVER like on the w810i? I really hope not because I listen to mostly podcasts and radio shows and if I lose my place it really sucked on the w810. They fixed it on the Z610i media player and was wondering if they did the same with the new Walkman phones.

Posted by: yangster258

Nice review. I can't wait to get it in December.

Have you tried watching videos on it? Someone in the other thread said they could. If you can, could you do a little review on that?

I second that request.

it's pretty amazing how some people do that there's no point in it oh and nice review

Posted by: hybrid.09

It doesn't take as long to fast forward, it speeds up the longer you hold it, atleast that's what I got.

Unfortunatly I don't have the phone anymore so I can't do anything with the videos, really sorry. I will try to get that done, or someone with a W850 can fill us in about the videos.

Thanks guys, that idiot who quoted my review just ruined the damn thread!

Posted by: ken.vs.ryu

If it had a 3mp cam, I'd switch in a minute! That is way sexy.

Posted by: stunnacorp_75

How does the reception compare with the K800i's?

Posted by: hybrid.09

Reception is very excellent, especially for a non-850 phone. I found that reception is actually better than my W810's, and it not having 850 doesn't make a huge difference and I did not notice and slight differences.

Obviously If you don't know what 850 is you'll disagree, or If you use a lot of data and like fast data, this phone doesn't have EDGE.

But none the less, it is on par with the K800.

Sure I'll keep that in mind when I want to quote something long next time...

That was a very nice review.....just wondering, is there a hole for a cell phone strap?

I tried to, but like, you purposly did it again. I'm sorry for being rude, please remove it.

Yes there is, but for some reason, it's smaller than the W810 and K800.

Posted by: randomtask77

I was hoping someone else that had the W850 could comment on the Track ID feature. I'm trying to use it and it tells me that music recognition service is unavailable.

Never heard or used anything like this before and was thinking if this is a region specific feature or if the problem lies elsewhere.

The second time I did it was a response to your insult. I have removed the quote from my second post. But I cannot remove it from the first since the 2 hour edit limit has past.

If a mod would kindly remove my quote of hybrid's review from my first post in this thread, it would be very much appreciated.

Posted by: hybrid.09

Maybe it's just not launched yet? Maybe it's only in Europe? Who knows. Check out Sony Ericsson's website, or Google.

The Walkman® player 2.0 simplifies navigation through music genres, playlists, individual songs or music albums and there’s also a TrackID™ feature powered by Gracenote Mobile MusicID. This is a new service which means you can record a few seconds of a song, either via the microphone or the in built FM radio, and then with one click send that clip to the Gracenote® worldwide music database which will identify the track and relay the information back to the phone.

I'm curious about listening to music from a bluetooth headset with the W850, and K800 for that matter. Is it possible to listen to music from a "regular" bluetooth headset, not just stereo ones with A2DP?

If youre in North America random... maybe its just not available because the phone is not being released there ???
I dont know if thats the case but just a guess on my part.

GREAT REVIEW hybrid !!!!

I actually had the chance to buy the headset from a friend, but I didn't want to pay $100 that he was selling it. I might actually pick it up for my K800 and make a little review on that.

That's what I was thinking as well. I do live in NA and Track ID isn't working for me. I have read other folks using the feature and have worked for them, but they don't live in the US.

Posted by: augustborn99

nice review hybrid. been waiting for a comprehensive user view

Posted by: hybrid.09

Thanks guys. If you guys have any more questions, feel free to share

Posted by: Hampa_D

i live in sweden and here the track id works but i have one isue with it actually, its when listening to streaming audio from online channels the track id dont work, or more like when trying to do anything else BUT listening to onlinechans the transmission stops and returns back to my playlist. hope they make the track id work on streaming radio too

Posted by: hybrid.09

I guess it only partly works in some places of Europe for now. Even though this would cost a lot, and take too much time, I doubt too many people would use this.

Posted by: Xcist

Awesome review, thank you very much hybrid.09! Much appreciated! *moto user soon switching to SE!*

Posted by: Mundo7

Just thought i'd confirm for the user who asked, video features are great on the 850.

I've just converted some episodes of Prison Break to watch on it and as long as you play about and get the right convesion settings, the video's run smoothly and in excellent quality.

same here i have a motorola v3x and think this fhone looks awsome and even better its upgrade time but the only thing putting me off is the release of the motorola razr maxx due the end of october but upto now the w850 looks set to be the winner as motorola`s build quality has gone down the pan of late and i had nothing but problems with my v3x.

Posted by: hybrid.09

Glad to hear suck things

Hope it's all good!

does this phone have a2dp? i thought it did, but it doesn't mention it on the se website.

Yes, it has A2DP.

For those of you that were wondering. The pictures of the phones were taken with my K800, the pictures of the UI was the W810

Posted by: starstalker

great review..

i was just wondering about the price.. how long do u think it will take for the first considerable drop?

Posted by: hybrid.09

My guess would be around or after Christmas, maybe even longer. It depends on how the phone market goes. Since Sony Ericsson will be releasing more phones over 2007 and same goes with other Manufacturers, the price should drop within 4-5 months.

Posted by: starstalker

really? below 400 only in four months?!

cause if u consider the z610, when it was first released, plemix and all other websites were selling it for around 400

now they are like 320..

maybe they need some time to readjust the price according to the demand..

how long has the phone been available?

Posted by: raj2k

just wondering was your review of the reception based in gta, and how loud is the speakerphone, is it louder when using mp3 than for a call?

Posted by: hybrid.09

Yes it was based in the GTA. The speakerphone is about mp3 level. Since MP3 speaker is loud, so is the speakerphone.

Posted by: raj2k

ok thanks, w850i will be next phone i pick up, w810i is excellent but no a2dp,w850i

Posted by: hybrid.09

Yeah. I sold the phone because It didn't have, but now I'm having second thoughts. I wouldn't care about the camera anymore since I am going to buy a Rebel XTi or a Nikon D80 soon

Posted by: starstalker

yeah..
i am just wondering if the prices are gonna drop soon
like, in less than a month, because i can wait, if not.. im buying it right away

Posted by: starstalker

any ideas of when it can go below 400 usd?

Posted by: hybrid.09

I can't say. Sorry. Just keep an eyes on the cell phone market and look at pricing. Sooner of later it'll drop.

Every phone starts off at a high price, like W810 for example, few months later, wham. Every carrier has it and it's so darn cheap.

Posted by: randomtask77

Quote:

There was actually a coupld of sellers on ebay that had it less than $400USD + shipping, but those auctions went quickly (I'm assuming) and now the majority of phones are around the 440 mark.

Posted by: starstalker

but like, how long has this phone been on the market?

Posted by: hybrid.09

This month (Q3 2006)

Posted by: aku9

Great review, w850 is awesome

Posted by: starstalker

just wondering,
are the themes of this phone similar to the w810, which they are "interactive" like they vibe or something like the orbit?

Yes, the W850 does have flash themes.

Posted by: hybrid.09

It only had one flash theme. The stock "Walkman" one wasn't.

Did it have more than one? Because mine only had the circle one.

I only have that one circle one as well. Its called "Grouped" I think.

Posted by: Bubbleman

I have 3 flash themes in my W850:

- Female Line
- Grouped
- Orange Bubbles

Posted by: lamplighter

Maybe the phones are different somehow ? Firmware ? Place of manufacture ? I wonder why the difference in flash themes ???

Cheers, LL-

Posted by: hybrid.09

I had "Walkman" and "Grouped"

Posted by: McLaren_F1

Hey Hybrid, Would those Themes work on a K790/K800? if so please share

Posted by: hybrid.09

I don't think so. I know the resolution is the same, but I doubt It'll work on the K790/800 beacuse I added the W810 flash lite themes, even though it was smaller, it did not work.

I wish I could get the themes anyways, but I don't have the phone anymore, and I don't know how to get them off the phone.

Posted by: MazerRackham

Wow, I think I want that phone..... SEXY. I will use the w300i as a backup/rough and tumble phone!

Posted by: marktang

well i think im abit late but hahaha nice review hybrid...makes me wanna get one too lol

Posted by: hybrid.09

Why do you need two K800's? Sell one.

Posted by: marktang

hahah one is mine and one is for my gf.

Posted by: Cosmic Fur

Awesome review. Just what I was looking for too. As soon as the price drops, I'm ditching my k700 for it. Thanks for your efforts.

Posted by: Asbardella

So I've had the phone for a day - most annoying 'feature'? Sleep mode comes on after roughly 5 seconds of inactivity, completely blanks the phone screen (and the light effects in Walkman mode) and there NO way to turn it off

Posted by: hybrid.09

Light effects of the Walkman? You mean it pulses on default? You can turn that off.

Posted by: Asbardella

No I want the light effects - but the screen fades to black so quickly if you're not touching anything that they're only on for ~5-6 seconds.

Posted by: starstalker

damn, cant decide whether to go for the white or the black one..

both look sexy...
in the front, the white one looks sexy,
from behind, the black one looks sexier.. i dont know.. dammit..

Posted by: hybrid.09

Yeah, it's too bad it doesn't last long, that was on disadvantage I was talking about.

They're both good choice. Depends on how you feel about dark or light colour, not to mention scratches will probably be more visible on the black one.

Go for the black one so you'll have a black D900, W810, and then a W850 Too bad you don't have a S710a

Posted by: starstalker

yeah.. i wanted the s710, but i bought my in taiwan, so they only had the silver one available, god how i miss my s700, that screen really knocked me off =(
too bad i was robbed..

Posted by: starstalker

yeah.. regarding like the texture and the surface of the black version, is it like, smooth? i mean like, glossy and stuff, as juding by the pictures, the white one seems to be smooth and glossy whilst the black one seems to be kind of rough.. (talking about where the navigation pad is)

Posted by: hybrid.09

Same style, just two different colours.

Also, I would like to thank LK Chong over at Mobile88.com for publishing my W850 review on they're site. You will be able to find the review on the front page, or by visiting this link: http://www.mobile88.com/mobilegalle...id=20088&cat=24

Thanks for all your questions and support

I tried sending them to my friend's k800 and it didn't work fully

The wallpapers show fine however the menu's just show the original k800 menu instead of the customized one.

Posted by: hybrid.09

Yep. I knew it

Guess flash themes won't work on the K800

Posted by: shaolinmonk

the 3g antenna seem to be quite good

hmm... i wonder if the screen is similar to the w900i screen since you said it's not as bright..

nice i want one.. but the black looks more appealing this time

agreed if only they kept the 2.0 with auto and macro.. i'd sell my k790a i think

It Will Never Work?

Posted by: hybrid.09

Maybe in the future FW releases.

As for the W850, the screen is pretty low in brightness, I haven't had the W900 so I have no idea. But for sure my W810 and K800 were way brighter. I guess they're trying to save energy maybe, who knows.

Shaolin, how did you like the review?

Posted by: break-r

too bad theres no autofocus or macro
they really cheaped out with the camera this time..

hows the slider durability compared to say, a d600?

Shaolin, how did you like the review?

the quoted one was better

great job the more reviews the better... would like to see more comments on the dpad though..that's what i really want to try out.

i'm also curious to how many times you've killed you leg by accident by bumping into that bedside

I am looking to buy a W850i, but in White. I tired LALAWEST.com it looks like they are the only one out there with a free shipping and free accessories. Too bad they don't carry the White one no more or else they have best service and price in town.. They told me that the white one is in back order for another week or so.. Any advise?

After using this D-Pad for a week, I've been very impressed. It has great feedback, with no mush. I prefer this design over the joystick seen on most of the candybar style phones. The center Play/Stop button is just concave enough to fit the ball of the tip of my thumb snuggly in for strong one handed Landscape browsing of the web or photos.

You can see in this photo of the part that the D-Pad is actually a circular button laying underneath a thin membrane of plastic covering the whole nav area (not visible in photo). It feels very solid and at night is very visible due to the 4 white LEDs.

I also want to note the keypad took awhile to get used to from my experience. From the time you pick it up the d-pad seems a bit crowded but after a day of use its pretty much second nature.

awesome review
do you still have the lg chocolate? if you could, could you post more comparison shots between those phones? i would askyou for a k800 for comparison but then u'd have no camera to use.. haha

Nice work hybrid ur review was awesome but i was wondering about 2 things in the W850i in the 2MP mode could I use Zoom just like in the W810i ? and does the W850i has a flight mode just like in the K800i where I can use the camera and everything in the phone besides bluetooth and thanks

Posted by: johnmoon

Thanks for the review hybrid
Im getting mine in next 2 hrs
tried both white and black at Sntraders yesterday
liked black colour more (I like white phones but for this one, it looked too girly imo)
well the only thing that makes me wanna get white is the "W medallion"
can not believe SE only give them with white!!!!

Posted by: johnmoon

Just picked black one
Man this baby looks so much better in person
totally loving it... will upload somme pictures later

one more thin... my black one came with sony original 1gb duo
not blue sandisk one from white... well i prefer sony over sandisk hehe

There is flight mode, like in most Walkman series phones, but I haven't tried with the W850. There is no zoom with the camera in the W850, which is pretty bad; no af, no macro, no zoom

As far as I know, most W series phones you can use Camera, confirmed with my K800, but not with the W850.

Yes I still have the LG Chocolate, but not the W850 anymore, sorry I couldn't do that. I'll try to get another unit soon and take some more comparison shots. I do have a camera to use, probably even better pictures

Posted by: hybrid.09

Also, you can't change the font in phones like the K800 and W850 and other ones with the nice font. Would ruin the phone If you changed font because it would look choppy.

Should've played some poker.

Posted by: hybrid.09

I don't think there are any blue lights. It's like white, then when you launch Walkman, it turns orange. Same thing I believe as the white, except no "W" strap (reported by other users)

i just got the w850
i like it, i just dont like the cross pad... its very not sensitive and u have to push pretty hard... maybe ill get used to it but yeah... haha

i like everything about it except for the two circular shaped buttons under the screen... and i didnt know the orange bar was a button either

Posted by: hybrid.09

Lol. Yeah, you might have to apply a bit of pressure to get the d-pad working, but it all pays off in the end

I might get the W950 soon, yes it's purple, but hey, it's not so noticible (is it?)

Posted by: svK

see i would get the W950...if it had some sort of camera...like even a 1MP would do for me...but then again it is designed to be a player =\

the light purple is alright...it's "different"...not a bad change though :P

ahhhh...easycell requires a $50 deposit on a W850...and it's not available for another 3 weeks....aiy...but that time..the price will have dropped already lol

the cheapest i found the W850 (white) at pmall was $580...i'm sure i can get it down to $570 (which is the price of the black one)...i'm surprised how a few places at pmall don't actually have it yet

Posted by: chanman87

yea i called Darren yesturday...was gonna pick it up @ 3pm but found out it was out of stock....but i called in on like sunday and they had stock....damnit...
i was hoping to be one of the first few to have this damn thing in toronto

heres an indepth review with pics of the w950

http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericss...-review-111.php
it comes with the hpm-82 headset!!! lol...

seriously... WHY PURPLE haha i might still get it though depending on the price of course... i could live without the camera and 850, and can stomach the purple color if only it had wifi

Posted by: acephone

Apparently the w950 is already available in HK.

http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-SONY-...1QQcmdZViewItem

A bit expensive for the exclusivity of having the barnie phone today.

Posted by: Xcist

I agree, d-pad CAN get a little annoying. I've had the w850 for about a week now, and the dpad has become fairly normal.

This phone is wicked, but there are TWO things I'm annoyed about:
- Another annoying thing is the top row of numbers (1,2,3). When I'm text msging, I find that i have trouble hitting those ones because the slide stops RIGHT above them, so there's not a lot of room.

- SLOW!!!! I don't know if it's just me or not, but the UI is horribly slow! I've tried different skins, and they're all roughly the same speed (flash ones even worse). If it's on the desktop, and I hit menu, it takes roughly 2-3 seconds for the menu to show! Another time I really notice it, is when i'm in the menu SETTINGS or something. And I hit right/left to go through different tabs - it lags big time. Note - this only happens if you double or triple tap right/left. If you just go ONE tab over, it's not too bad, but you can still feel the lag.

PLEASE, someone else with a w850 let me know if you're feeling the lack of speed as well, because I'm wondering if it's just me or not. I've played with my friends' w900/w810/w800/w600. In ALL of them, the UI is much much MUCH faster.

Can you answer calls without sliding the keypad out?

Similarly, can you make calls without sliding the keypad out (ie. using the D-pad or whatever to access your address book and make calls?)

Yes you can You can do it that way, or just open it and dial the number, and close the slide and talk.

As Hybrid said, yes you can do all that. Another you can do is have the "slide to answer" option. So that when you slide your phone open it answers the call. I think it's much more slick than hitting the button, and it might be personal preference, but I don't like talking into a phone 4 inches long. I'd rather have the mic come down further. =)

Oh, and I wish they had an option for "slide close phone to hang up." That way I wouldn't have to ever touch the buttons to pick up/hang up. Oh well =)

I was actually afraid it would do that, so I just slided it down during a call and ta-da!

Great review hybrid.09. But I was wondering when in mp3 player mode, my w810i was way louder than my w850i when I use the headset it came with. Is that a problem with just my phone? Or does anyone else notice this? Also I find the casing of the w850i to be alittle loose, compared with other slider phone. Is anyone else having these similar problems?

Posted by: hybrid.09

Yeah, the speaker is loud, but I have no idea about using with the HPM-70's. The casing of the phone wasn't loose for me, maybe you just are experiencing wear and tear I guess, or you got a shaky one.

anybody else's w850 restart when you have the headset plugged in and you activate the walkman app?

it restarted on me 3 times today... i would get a white screen, then the phone would reboot... rebooting is normal for an SE phone, but 3 times in a span of an hr or two is kinda pushing it... wondering if i should bring it up to my supplier so that i can get it replaced or just wait for the new firmware?

whats new abt the phone is taht some of the flash based themes, they show the track playing as part of the wallpaper... its neat... theres 2 themes and they display them differently...

i love the new walkman interface, its very nice... and its no longer fricken orange... =)

both phones are very similar
i find the w850 faster, and a smaller build then the w900... it comes with a 1 gig card, and w900 has 470 built in... i really think the lcd remote thing is useless on the w900, its placed at an awkward position and drags the earphones out of your ear...

so basically, comes down to autofocus + bigger build, or smaller build and no autofocus lol

i would choose the w850 myself, although they are both good phones... w900 i think is a little old to be priced at what it sells for, the phone's almost a year old i bought mine during xmas when it first came out

Posted by: GT-[R]

but of course if u have the w900 already its kinda pointless to change phones since they are very similar

thx hybrid, but this i already knew. was looking for a manual lock. something similar to the sliding switch of the w900i

Posted by: hybrid.09

I thought it was lockable by pressing like two keys, but I guess that was either to unlock it or I was dreaming.

Posted by: Supes

Can you listen to the radio on the W850i without those freakin earphones plug into the jack? My Z710i requires them because the earphones are the antenna too. It would be nice to listen to radio without having to plug in everything damn time. thanks

Posted by: hybrid.09

Nope. Most or all Sony Ericcson's have that. It's because the HPM-70's are used as wires for a connection.

Posted by: hybrid.09

I just had an idea. They should have made a keypad lock switch on the side of the phone like most other Walkman phones. Oh well SE, maybe next time.

Posted by: break-r

i prefer the auto lock over the switch on the side
pressing less buttons = uber cool

How does the camera compare to the S710a?

Posted by: hybrid.09

Well I've never owned the S710 so I have no idea If it has auto-focus or not. The camera in my opinion on the W850 sucks, no auto-focus or macro. Defeats the purpose of 2MP. I would own one If it had that feature.

Posted by: Eric_1221

I'm not sure if the S710a has auto focus or not... Anyone know?

Posted by: hybrid.09

I check this site and it says it does, so I'm guessing it's better. 1.3MP with auto focus would beat 2.0 without, because the pictures look like crap, but at times, the W850 could beat the S710. Look at the test pics on the first page

Posted by: Eric_1221

It seems to be about the same quality actually, which isn't too bad.
Thanks for the help.

Posted by: Talon88

S710a has NO auto focus.

no but its worth considering a screen protector as the screen could get scratched pretty easily.

Posted by: TC03

I got this phone a few days ago. I like it a lot. It looks pretty cool, and the Walkman function is superb. I'm very satisfied with it!

Posted by: eddie415

wow..great job hybrid..yeah i'm a bit late but even now you've convinced me to get this phone. I actually had some questions too, first i'm on a cingular network in the US is that going to be a problem concerning reception i have the w810i right now and the reception on the phone is fine because it has the 850 bandwidth but since the w850 doesnt i was concerned about the reception quality. Lastly i was wondering if anyone knew a legit website or an actual store in new york where i can go about buying phone unlocked. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Posted by: hybrid.09

I think you won't get many issues with the network and using 1900. Since this was tested in Toronto, 1900 was on-par or better at times than using 850. I used both K790a and W850, and W850 was on par with the K790a.

For a legit store, you can always Google some sites, or check the HowardForums marketplace. Also, If your willing to drive around New York, and get probably the best price, go visit My World Phone (148-48 Hillside Ave, Briarwood, New York 11435) or call them at Main Office: (360) 526-0465 | (212) 731-2257

Good luck man, If you need any more help, just let me know. Also, currently they're price $ 397.00, which is really good, and they might give ya' a deal Good luck.

UI is fair, but slow compared to the rest of the SE line

i hate F4:352!!! it shows up randomly in the place of any word in the UI.

Oh, I forgot to mention that. I thought it was a 1 time glitch, guess not.

I get that more often than I would like.

There was a time when I had the Walkman options up and almost all of the words were replaced by it.

Yea... I've seen this as well on more than one occasion.
Eagerly awaiting a firmware fix...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but would happen to know where I could get some java games that would work on the W850i? Thanks for any help.

You can look for games and apps for the K800/K790. They should all work fine. I've found those phones were easier to search for than the w850i.

240x320 games, that are compatible with the K790/K800 as well.

Search the forums for it.

Thanks. I was hoping those would work.
