Questions for those who de-branded their W810i

Hello, I have some questions for those who de-branded their Cingular W810i. My current firmware is R4EA031, CDA 102494/58, CID49, Cingular:

1. Currently I can't add gMail or any other email accounts other than the provided, say Yahoo, MSN, AOL and AIM. Do I need to de-brand in order to add other POP3 accounts?

2. If yes to question 1, will I still able to use MSN, Yahoo and AOL after de-branding?

3. After de-branding, can I re-assign the Cingular logo shotcut? Currently it is linked to Media net.

4. After de-branding, do I get a newer firmware than the R4EA031, or it is not related?

5. After de-brandning, can I still use SEUS in the future?

Sorry for being a noob, but I am going to carry a W810 in addition to my BlabkBerry 8700c, so...

Thank you for your time!

in addition to his question, which is better to use for debranding the w810, wotan or davinci?

1) I De-branded mine and now it allows me to creat an e-mail account in the Messaging function, it removes the "cingular e-mail" from the main menu

2) I believe you can set up multiple e-mails but I have not tried to do so

3)The Cingular button reassigns itself to like a task manager where you can have a list of shortcuts, it gives you your alerts, ie txt messages, and internet bookmarks. I absolutely love this feature.

4) I updated mine to the R4EA031

5) Have not tried using SEUS but I would assume that you could.

6) I went through wotan and it was the easiest thing ever!!

Hope this helps a little bit

I am planning on getting a W810i this week. Cingular now has it here for $149.
So it seems it would be cheaper to buy if for that and then spend the money to unlock it, vs 299 for an unlocked versions.
If i do that, is there a way to save off the firmware and reflash it
back to the branded version in case I need to return or exchange it?

Just got my phone yesterday, planning to debrand with Wotan. Should I disable AMR on this phone is that still an issue with Cingular? Does the Cingular version have ARM enabled?

I dodn't know if there is a way to backup the firmware before de-brand it, so I went ahead with WOTAN last night, took me a few attempts, but I got everything working and could be more happier.

I didn't enable AMR when I debrand, but I don't see harm if you enable it.

Thank you! It was very informative and I followed your advice and de-branded it last night, took me a few tries but all went well at the end.

for those of you who debranded your w810i phones:

you did this with wotan and a USB cable, right? if so, what kind of driver installation did you need between your phone and your computer?

I've been hearing plenty of horror stories about how people cant get Windows XP to see their w810i phones even after installing the software CD that comes with these phones.

I want to debrand mine, but I want to make sure I have all this driver BS figured out before I tackle this project on.

Yes, WOTAN with a cable that comes with your phone. You can get the driver from WOTAN, or Sony Ericsson's website. I used the one from Sony Ericsson's webiste when I install the SEUS to try to update the firmware, but turns out the W810i I received from Cingular already has the latest firmware, therefore no need to upgrade. I then proceed to use WOTAN. Since the driver has been installed when I use SEUS, there is no need to install the drivers again.

Hope this help.

I think this is as close as you get, but it is very straight forward:

soooo... de-branding using wotan is gonna cost 7 eur, that's it?

another question, should I get cingular to unlock the phone before or after the debranding, or does it matter?

Posted by: jrsmooth

Yep, about $9USD.

Unlock or not, it does not matter. I unlocked it before I de-branded it.

Debranding and unlocking are the same thing right?
As in once you debranded from say, Wotan, its unlocked?
Sorry for the newbie question, just wanted clarification

Two different thing, de-branding just change the look of your phone (along with customizations etc), think of this as you change the themes in your Windows XP machine.

De-brand does not equal to unlock, though it could be done, you may need a different cable and may need to pay for a seperate account.

if I use my mom's PC to unbrand with wotan will it still sync with iSync on a mac the same way afterward? I would assume so, but considering that is the entire reason I got the phone I would like to know

also will there be any settings I need to input to use medianet with cingular after debranding?

Thanks!

Your first question is, uhh, not really a question. You can sync the phone with as many system as you like,

After un-branding, you can go to Sony Ericsson's website to have most settings set to your phone via SMS.

so if I debrand the phone, will I still need to find a unlock service to get all the features that cingular restricted

all the features will be unlocked as soon as you debrand the phone.

*on a side note*

I debranded mine today using the wotan method and everything went well (in the begining). I then went to work a couple hours later and thats when the shiznet hit the fan. my w810i started to rebooted randomly and then it just locked up with the dreaded WSOD.

so I then went to see my buddy who works at a COR store and he returned it for another one. so I stick my sim card in the new phone and the damn thing wouldnt move past a blank, white screen. we pulled the battery out and tried it again and it still did the same damn thing. so this phone was DOA right out of the box.

I am now on my 3rd w810i and all is okay so far. so, the lesson learned here is: dont screw with the damn thing. my first w810i worked perfectly UNTIL I flashed the damn thing. thats when everything went south. hopefully the 3rd time's a charm because there wont be a fourth time. I dont have the patience for this kind of stuff.

i can't live with the cingular branding... i need to get rid of it! so i guess i'll just take the risk

Sorry I misunderstood your question, I thought you are talking about SIM unlock, I didn't realized you are talking about "unlocking the features".

Sorry.
