Roaming indicator on UTS 6700

It appears that the roaming indicator for my lovely new phone doesn't actually blink when in the preferred roaming area (Alltel), but stays lit whether I am in an OK roaming area or the "bad" roaming where I could be charged 99 cents a minute. All I could get out of the customer service/tech support folks at Alltel was that if my data worked, then I was in an ok area. My roaming indicator is lit IN MY HOUSE! But according to them, the tower I am on is a "good" tower. Said all that to say this: any hope of an update/whatever so that I could know that I am in an ok area other than the data thing? I just don't want that kind of surprise on my bill.
