When I try and run voice command on the Pearl it displays 'Unable to allocate memory. Close other applications and try again' anybody had this or know how to close running programmes?

Have you tried popping out the battery to clear EVERYTHING out of memory. That's the first thing I would do.
To see what is running, press the menu key (to the left of the trackball) and select Switch Application. You are then presented with a ribbon of what is running. You can sometimes go to the application and close it. Not all applications (like phone) can be closed.

Have a look at this thread. How to quit applications is posted.

i have a rogers unit with the most recent software on it and i am finding that the memory starts off at around 14mb available, then drops to aound 6-7mb after using the messaging application for about an hour. i know how to close programs, and i have cleared the web browser cach, but i cant seem to free up more than 1mb of memory unless i pull the battery (then it starts off around 14mb again).
i send half a dozen pins, a few text messages, some short emails, a few calendar entries, etc, thats it. i have the camera set to save pics to the memory card, i have erased all mms messages, both inbox and outbox. what can i do different?
thanks

Interesting...
I checked my status and I had 9.6MB of available file space.
Pulled my battery and I now have 16.7MB of available file space. I'm guessing the Pearl does a whole lot of caching to RAM. Once the Berry is restarted the cache gets flushed.

the problem i am finding is that once i get bellow 8mb of memory the device slows down. it makes looking for pics painfully slow.
does anyone know how to free up memory without having to pull the battery. if i wanted to that once a day i would have stuck with my wm5 devices!
