Entering Letters on Phone Call

I understand that each keep has either 1 or 2 letters per key in the QWERTY format. What do I need to do if I am on a call and need to enter someone's last name and such since the keys are not conventional to a phone?

Try holding down the alt key then spell the name

Try switching to multitap?

Yes just hold ALT key and type the letters. It automatically dials the number for you.
