904SH question(s)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

As my inner struggle as to whether I should get the 903SH or 904SH continues, I have some questions that may sway my decision.

i. Is the softbank version of the phone the exact same as the vodafone version? That is to say, if/when the unlock is released for one, will it work on the other? I ask this because the white version of the 904SH is the ONLY one I can see myself using.

ii. Has the ringtone volume been increased? I heard that the sound on the 903SH was rather low, I'm not very observant, I need my phone to be pretty loud for me to take notice.

iii. Is the camera superior to the 903SH's?

Anddd...that's about it. Thanks in advance for any answers.

P.S. If you feel like it, feel free to give your opinion on which to pick.

The 903SH camera is *marginally* better,.... apparently.

My ringtone on my 903SH are some of the loudest for some reason, it is set at level 5 and its a .m4a file...

so m4a are loud for 903? whats the difference with aac and mp3?

Posted by: Havo

Well... I had hk firmware which supported AAC's and it wasn't that loud... It's as loud as the mp3's on my Euro firmware.

i) softbank and voda is the same other then visual
ii) volume in the 904 is a lot louder
ii) 903's and 904's camera is the same. but 904's compression ratio is higher so therefore pix comes out a lil worse. (wont notice difference if ur 1st time user)

aac vs mp3
aac and mp3 is just different encoding kinda like words in chinese and english, both the same but different ways of saying it.

aac tend to be louder just cause they way they are but generally it really depends on the song...

i have a question as well, if i get a japanese firmware 903SH, will it be able to play mp3 or acc? or do i need uk or hk firmware to play those files?

Posted by: AL9999

JP 903SH = AAC only. All the other firmwares can play MP3s.

No! Instead The European Firmware is the only one capable of playing MP3.
Unless you have the Panasonic Card reader which sort of allows you to use MP3 on the JP firmware

The Euro firmware is the only one capable of setting MP3 as ringtones. Every firmware except the Japanese one can play them in the music player.

oh Really? That never worked on any of my two 903, and I have tried on the three different firmware. Neither on my 904 or 703shf. I hope you do not mean MP4 which of course will work.

Let me know if anyone figure out a way the .MP3 files will actually on non-european firmware instead of having the 'illegal file' pops up.

Posted by: AL9999

Yup. Other forum members will tell you the same.

MP3 files work in the music players of the Euro, HK and TW firmwares, and they can be set as ringtones in the Euro firmware only. They can't be used at all in the JP firmware only.

Make sure those MP3 files you put in are under 192bps and with Constent Bit Rate (not VBR, Variable Bit Rate).

EDIT: The MP3 criteria listed above is for "Media Player". For using MP3 as ringtone, please refer to AL9999's and Kevbodian's posts.

al, isnt there a size restriction on the mp3 as ringtone? like 300kb, cbr, 192?

Posted by: AL9999

The CBR and 192kbps restriction is there yes, but the size restriction is 3MB. I just set a 2.9 MB MP3 as a ringtone without any problem.
