Opinions on the Volvo S40?

Well, my sister is in the market for a new used car. She has her eyes set on a 2002 Volvo S40 listed for $16000 with ~84,000km. The car seems to ride very nicely and doesn't seem to have any issues. The bumper does have scratches along the bottom, and there is a small crack, so it seems like the previous owner ran into a curb with it. But the dealer said that they'd fix that as well as anything else that may come up. Now my question is, does anyone here have/has owned a S40? How are they reliability wise? It seems like the majority of owners are pretty satisfied but I just want some more opinions. Thanks!

My cousin owned a V50 (SW version of S40). Though she has the newer model ones, it was 05 model but shouldn't be that different. It's a very solid car. I drove it couple times and liked it very much, very economical car. Recently she just sold the car for 16K USD with only 10K miles in it. I don't know if retail price is significantly different here than in Canada, but you might want to bargain the price a little bit.

As for the bumper crack, make sure the bottom engine cover is undamaged.

EDIT: What's up with the rear license plate?

Volvo's are not reliable cars. So if your looking for something reliable, look somewhere else.

Its a nice looking car though.

i had a neighbor who LOVED his volvo. He said it was a great car. Best idea is to search out a volvo forum, or consumer reports. Heres what a quick google search of volvo s40 relability brought up.

Ah ok that's for the opinions. Yeah we're not going to go for it now just because of that sketchy reliability. Next car now, the Altima! Test drove the 3.5L one and that really goes!

Oh and that rear license plate is the dealer's. We just came back from a test drive so we hadn't taken the plate off yet.

In addition to expensive to repair. If you're asking for opinions, go Toyota or Honda. If she likes the car for its size, compare Camry or Accord.

Thanks for all of the opinions! Strangely though, my sister had her heart set out on the Volvo because appearently it's the brand that she's always wanted. So she's actually going to be getting the Volvo S40 pictured above...but atleast there's going to be a 3 year warranty on it as well. I'll post pics when we get the car next week!

Volvo's aren't reliable? well I guess it depends... my mom owned a 740 GL and it was pretty reliable. my mom now owns a 97 850 hasn't given her any real trouble since we bought it in january(hole in the exhaust). not showing any signs of giving up accept for that danm right windshield wiper

Before Ford bought Volvo, they were good reliable cars, now not so sure.

Is it me or does the resale value of a Volvo stink? Im not trying to be a thread pooper here but check out the used auto magazines that you can get from the newstands and check out the prices for 03-05 Volvos that would of cost new about 50K but sell for about half...

The S40 looks nice and I think insurance for a Volvo is lower then other brands such as Nissan or Honda.
