Desktop sync problems with Pearl

I'm trying to transfer some jpgs and mp3s over to the pearl over USB by way of BB Desktop Manager (v4.2) using the media manager. (using WinXP SP2 etc.)
Outlook contacts, tasks etc. synced up just fine...
the files show up on the BB but they are corrupt and will not be read properly. The images will not display (jpgs and pngs both tried) and mp3s skip as if the data was corrupt.
the phone is from rogers.
firmware: v 4.2.0.51 (platform 2.2.0.32)
I havent flashed it or anything -- brand new out of the box.
Any help would be appreciated.
