That's exactly what I meant Jung you even posted in that very thread about the differences between DoCoMo's network and others.

Posted by: borgis

well if this is possible then we're not stuck to voda/softbank sharp phones anymore and has the possibility of enjoying using expensive docomo phones eh.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

if there are unlocks...... (which there aren't)

oh well, its just me being stupid sorry lol.

also DoCoMo phones are INCREDIBLY hardwired to the network...... (download a sample manual of any random phone and read it)

Posted by: borgis

so what do u mean? but what about those some phones that can be cracked which i know is from docomo too?

Posted by: yangj08

Only the M1000 has been unlocked so far. Now, if someone would start trying to unlock the other roaming-capable DoCoMo phones, I would be happy indeed.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

the settings etc are all hardwired. i suspect if a FOMA phone (excluding the M1000) could be unlocked you'd only be able to call and text. Just imagine how many features of a Japanese phone (e.g. 904T or 903SH) cannot be used and they are both unlocked. Now double, or triple the amount of features unusable outside Japan. If you want a better idea, just download a PDF manual for a random FOMA phone of your choice (exclude Nokias and Motorolas, so NEC, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic etc ok)

Wow i like the SIMPURE N in WHITE is very sexy! But i still like the 705 more :P

Posted by: yangj08

SIMPURE N is kind of a crap phone- I tried it once and the only thing it has going for it is style. Other than that it's useless, especially without an unlock. I do have an idea of how much I'm missing out on, though- I'm playing with a N901iS and I can't use a lot of the features without a network connection (there's a remote control program to control the TV with the phone- needs to access the internet to download the IR codes, FeliCa is no good in Shanghai anyway, etc) and I can't use the music function because of 2 things-
1- it needs a miniSD card 256MB or less
2- It needs to format the card to read it. But, it needs the lock code to format the card. I have a feeling that the seller obtained the phone using less than legitimate means (judging by the text messages in the phone) so I'm afraid to contact the original owner and ask (for that matter, I can only put together an approximate picture of this person- university staff member/student who also works at a company that provides tours for Japanese students to Tibet and Mongolia, which begs the question- how did the phone get to Shanghai?). Sorry if I've dragged the thread off-topic.

sooo how the hell can we use these world phones if they cant be unlocked? do we gotta sign up for docomo in japan and be on roam charges?? or do they unlock their phones for us??

Posted by: Junglizt1210

they dont do unlocks.

remind me what the messages were about, you did mention them once....

Posted by: totaltoanage

and the point that they advertise world 3g+gsm enabled phones because...

Posted by: Junglizt1210

its not for us, its for the japs travelling overseas.

Posted by: AL9999

Yup, they're 'world phones' to the Japanese because they can roam as DoCoMo subscribers, not for us because we want to use them with our own operators.

Posted by: borgis

oh man.... crack it up! lol. jkjkjk

Actually, it's a lot of personal stuff and mentions of a "membership fee" (the quote is "please pay your membership fees today- transfer the funds to Tokyo Mitsubishi Bank account number 282xxxx") and plans for their tour group (like "We need to make arrangements for our next trip to Mongolia, can you do it?"). Apparently, this person is very social, since his/her "mixi" (I'm guessing it's like the Japanese Myspace, from what I can find on a Google search, maybe someone here can enlighten me"). Also some messages from "Daito University of the Arts" (everything was either translated from Japanese myself or I put it through an online translator), but when I go to the university's website they call themselves "Daito Bunka UniverCity" - apparently they can't spell or capitalize correctly (site at http://www2.daito.ac.jp/en/ ) which led me to think this is a staff member or student. The thing that made me suspicious about where this phone came from was the last text message where a co-worker tells him/her to come to China after his work is done. With this many messages (especially the ones with bank account info) I suspected that this person either lost the phone and some Chinese person picked up the phone and decided to sell it, or that this person had it stolen from him/her (especially because the lock code is still there- can't use a miniSD card without it unless I format it on another NTT DoCoMo phone by NEC).

PS- I was digging around the phone, and found that it has a built-in virus scanner by McAfee. Is this unique to the N901iS, do other NEC phones have it, or do all DoCoMo phones have it?

Posted by: borgis

oh man all i can do now is drool. "mcafee" on a non-OS phone? oh man....

Posted by: scotttttttttt

hahaha at mixi. yeah, similar to myspace.
