unlimited data plan for $19 on a unlocked TyTN?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: acem77

my main phone was a mpx220 with the ulimited data plan for $19.
i need to replace the mpx220 now after droping it(ngage is my backup now).
i see if you have a pda style phone cingular wants you to pay more for the unlimited data plan.
if i just take my sim out and pop it in a unlocked TyTN phone will i be set for unlimited data?
the mpx220 was just gprs for data speeds. will the TyTN sence what it can do for its best speed such as 3g or edge? or wil i have to tell cingular i need those higher speed activated? if so i guess i would just say i have a 3g enabled non-pda/smartpone to keep the cheaper rates.

anyone here with a TyTN do something like this?

if it works i would save a few hundred dollars a year.

I went from an MPX220 to an 8125, and am using the $19.99 data plan. When I first got the 8125 a Cingular rep claimed the Media Net plans wouldn't work with a PDA phone. I told them I would take my chances, and have been using it successfully for months. You should be able to swap your sim into the TyTN and use whatever speeds are available in your area without changing data plans. The only problem you might have is if you have an old sim. I don't have a 3G phone yet, so I'm not sure about that part. Other than that as long as you have the Cingular settings in the TyTN it should be smooth sailing.

what are some things you should NOT to if you do this in order not to get caught, i heard tethering but i dont know exactly what that is, and how often do people get caught.

Posted by: robothero

if you tether, you'll have to set up an application which makes all of the data appear to be coming from the phone. I have not done this yet, so I don't have any answers on how it is done.

Posted by: cshehan

tethering = connecting a computer to your phone to utilize its data connection.

You can tether. I've done it, and so have several other people on this forum. You just need to be careful and not use it as your sole internet connection. If you get your email and browse some pages once in a while Cingular is highly unlikely to notice. If you however decide to download the DVD distro of Fedora Core one day, they will notice that type of usage. My understanding is the worst case scenario is they cut off your data package and you would have to call cs and probably have to buy the laptop connect or pda connect package.

What about direct push, they told me I needed to have the $29.99 plan and not the $19.99 plan to get Microsoft Direct Push. I'm assuming based on the comments above this isn't correct?? Could someone confirm?

Posted by: cjmedina

no i use push email on my media works package just fine

Posted by: MenTLPiRacY

cool i was wondering about this. so let me get this strait.. there is no differnce between the speeds of the PDA plan for $39.99 and Media net unlimited?

Posted by: cjmedina

not really depends on the device. pda connect is suppose to let you use both ap's wap and isp. isp is suppose to have better compression.

Yeah, they'll tell you a lot of things. But that's not true. Smartphone w/ ditect push is identical to media max for data. There's absolutely nothing special about it or any data plans for using dirct push.
Get Media max 200 instead because it comes w/ text messaging. It'll also work fine on the TyTn unless you need to use MS windows pptp vpn, which case you'll need the PDA plan to get the isp.cingular acces point.

All $30 and under data plans = wap.cingular onky

All $40 and up data plans = wap.cingular + isp.cingular

I've never seen a difference in speed between wap or isp, even on 3G. I just use wap all of the time and I'm going back to media max myself.

Bty the way. All Cingular pdas are configured to use wap.cingular by default anyway.

I'll i'll try to remember to explain in more detail tomorrow when I'm on a real keyboard and not this little PDA keyboard.

RF9, this is not true...I bought my 8125 via cingular and have the media max/works 1000(whatever its called). My settings were for isp.cingular and I had to reconfigure for wap.cingular

I feel like this is a Deja Vu thread as it has been asked 1000's of times. I won't ***** because I asked it not that long ago.

I went from the 8125 to the e62 and never had an issue like everyone else using the MediaMax200. My girlfriend rapes my 200 though, so I think I might have to go to 1000.

Interesting. I got an 8125 and it came pre-configured for wap.cingular with wireless.cingular.com proxy setting. It came with the orig. shipping ROM from 2005.
When I installed the latest ROM update (2.25) it factory reset (hard reset) my 8125 again and it was configured for wap.cingular + proxy.
I'm just curious what version of ROM you have that came pre-configured for isp.cingular. Also how did you install the latest update and not get set for wap.cingular?

Back when the Treo 650 first started selling on Cingular, you could get ONLY media net as the data plan for the first month. After which they switched it to the PDA plan. I guess they realised at that point the Treo was a PDA and not a "smart phone" LOL.

Yeah. This question gets asked at least once every two weeks. But every two weeks it's a new quesion to many people. I should post this to the wiki and just link to it for the answer, save us all a bunch of time. The other most common question is "Can I take my SIM from my current phone and just put it in my new phone?" I'm often suprised by that question as I think it's common knowledge that 'yes, that's the point' but alas, it's a valid question. Once can't assume that just because it's the same shape and size that it'll work.

But back to topic. Perhaps there are some PDAs that didn't get configured for wap.cingular. I've just never seen one, including my 8125 and it's ROM update. Also if you go to the Cingular.com/support site and look up the internet settings for any and all PDAs, you'll see that those instructions direct you to use wap.cingular and if I recall correctly, never mention isp.cingular.
(EDIT)
I checked. Appearently it directs you to use isp.cingular when you look up the instructions for connecting a laptop through bluetooth. But the settings it gives you for setting up the PDA are wap.cingular.

I would think Cingular wants us on wap.cingular so we don't gobble up thier pool of IP addresses.

My rom is 2.25.11.1 as of 5/11/06. With that rom, the default was isp.cingular. I called one of my cousins who uses the PDA connect plan and said he was pre-configured for isp.cingular as well so who knows.

https://www.cingular.com/support/de...nt=KB56475.html is the link to set up on 8125...now here is where the debate always comes in about using media net or pda connect plan. With media net you only get wap.cingular and with pda connect, you get both. If you do your own research the site tells you to use wap.cingular but yet, in a store, a rep will tell you it has to go through isp.cingular. This is the reason there is a question every week about which to use, because cingular reps always give conflicting answers.

The way I've always seen it, if it aint broke, dont fix it. If things are working via medianet then why say anything?

Chnky,
Just to make sure there's no confusion. Are you sure it was set to the wap.cingular access point? Or are you referrig to that the default network setting is titled "My ISP GPRS"
These are two very different things. I don't doubt you know what you're talking about, but I can see where it would be an easy thing to confuse.

Settings>Connections>Connections
Under "My ISP" select manage existing networks
Under there I had "My ISP GPRS" (the only one.)
Select "My ISP GPRS" and select "EDIT"
Click "NEXT" and under Access Point Name it reads "wap.cingular"

What does your say when you go through this process?

Also, what the guys say in the store can often not be relied on. I know they go through training, but they don't always fully understand it and sometimes get things confused. What's listed on the web site should be considered pretty reliable since it went through some sort of process to get there.

I agree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I was just trying to point out that many people are using wap.cingular anyway which comes with Media Net. So it'd make no difference (technically) if they were on Media Max or the PDA plan.
Cheers.

I have the origional Cingular Network Setup document from Cingular saved on my PC somewhere. I'll post it, it's a little enlightening. It was removed from the internet about a year ago. let me see if I can dig it up.

Well my apologies sir...it is called my ISP but pointed at wap.cingular was the default, I also had a second one(not the default that was pointed at isp.cingular)...so I guess to answer the question...mine has both but the default was wap.cingular. Sorry for the confusion.

And I totally agree that the sales reps at Cingular(some, not all) suck at thier job and dont know a thing. I have been asked 2x to work for Cingular by a rep because I knew what I was talking about more than them. It's very irritating to go into a store to get answers only to find out that none of them even know what you're talking about. Guess that's why I love Hofo so much, answers more questions and in less time than it takes to go to an actual Cingular store.

Hey no problem. I was initially thrown off by this when I first got the 8215 until dug deeper. It's obviously an easy thing to mix up.

And yes. HoFo is a beautiful thing. I attribute just about everything I now about cel phones to here and treocentral.com. I would be as lost as anyone else without it.

This is all very interesting; do you receive any text messages for free while you have the unlimited data plan? I currently have vzw with unlimited data and receive 1000 free text that is supposed to be used for exchange server but its not

if you get mediamax unlimited plan with 200 text and unlimited data its 19.99 and 29.99 for umlimited data with 1000 text...how much does your plan cost?

Posted by: RF9

I personally have a family plan sharing 850 min/month (Unlim M2M/N&W) that cost $70 for two phones (avg of $35 per line.) $20 media max on each comes out to $120ish with tax. Not bad.. $60 per line total.
