razr v3i backlight

I have just bought this the razr v3i. The backlight goes out after 20 secs and the phone defaults to the home page. I am older and not quite as fast as I used to be and quite often I am inthe middle of looking and thinking whan the light goes out and I have to start again. Only options I am offered is 5 10 20 secs. I have seen a reference to seem editing but have no idea what that is. Can anyone help before an oldie has a nervous breakdown. That will teach me to buy new-fangled technology. Thanks in advance
