Yeah, but how much better?

Posted by: HTC_S60_Fan

honestly richy, if Apple is having issues with 3g reception, who's to say RIM won't either??? HTC has got the whole 3G thing down pat. Add to the fact it still has more features and a better keyboard, touchscreen, TF3D and Opera Mobile, The Bold just can't compare.

Posted by: neo001

Guys remember that I live in Tijuana Mexico , and I do not use AT&T so it may be different here , 3G service in my city is great , I have not heard a single person complain about it , well maybe the price , but hey if you want the latest you have to pay the ultimate price hehe

And no sir , I will not go back to WM until they really do change something , maybe I will wait for WM08 hehe because 6.1 is just not cutting it for me , cheers !!

neo, don't judge until u've played with Touch Flo 3D...

Posted by: richy240

It's just a shell replacement. Well, not even that - it's just an app that runs on top of WM, just like the original Touch plug-in, but more animated. What's the big deal? It's still good ol' Windows Mobile under the hood, with the same old boring and cumbersome Messaging, Calendar and Contacts applications and no real innovation whatsoever. It's so bland and there's no interesting or usable UI to speak of at all.

Don't get me wrong - I gave my iPhone to my GF and I'm back to using my Tilt, but it's still a crappy P.O.S. under the hood. But it's not like BlackBerrys are any better. They're even LESS usable and MORE boring if you ask me. I'm thinking of checking out WM Standard 6.1 personally, as it has a new home screen and such. Still subpar, but better than some of the current offerings.

And Opera Mobile sucks just as badly as any other WM browser - you can't build a great app on top of a crappy UI, it just doesn't work that way.

And regarding 3G, I've disabled it completely. It's useless. It sucks batteries faster than anything, and AT&T in Houston is horrendous. Can you say dropped calls and spotty 3G? (Hint: I can.)

You like it, eh? Maybe I'll give this 8800 I've got laying around another shot. I'm about to throw my Tilt out the window - what a piece of crap! This device almost makes me want to stop buying WM devices entirely.

LMFAO . . .

You know what I have never ever thought of that , yeap that must be it , by the way do you have a box of depends for me hahaha but no really dude , I really do think you hit the nail with that comment , I have been riding the WM boat for the longest (not as long as a lot of people here) but you get the point , anywho , yeap I am bored to death , and it will really really need to change , but I mean a big change for me to go back , but hey never say never right ??

Posted by: mikewchandler

wm works for me. I use a stripped down custom rom from xda on my touch and the OS is not the problem. The problem is bloated stuff (including some 3rd party apps). They bog down the OS. If you use a plain OS and add only essentials, it is quite a bit different experience. my $0.02

I just checked my post count for this thread: I'm fifth from top. Wow, I really have nothing particular to say so many times

Posted by: HTC_S60_Fan

I mean, let's look @ the candidates

Iphone: Doesn't support A2DP . that for me is an automatic disqualification

Symbian : I love it, I rly like it's simplicity. And I would kill for a N95/N96 with a Touchscreen.

Blackberry: Never been very media friendly, doesn't support higher end SDHC cards, Browser isn't worth it compared to Opera and Skyfire. and Blackberry FINALLY added A2DP

Palm OS: Doesn't support 3G...end of story.

Windows : Supports A2DP, 3G, Touchscreen. Pound for pound, no other OS has more devices with more features. yea it's a tad creaky but it's like a american muscle car....dat V-8 still kicks ***...

I'm still a sick, addicted person. I bought a new Diamond (CDMA) today....the saga continues..........

I agree with this statement, but when do we say enough is enough and move on to something else? 5+ years without a major upgrade to UI or feature-set? I am starting to feel the pain of Palm OS users (all of which should kick Palm to the curb because it sucks worse than ANYTHING)!

As my wife's carrying in from the car her phone, MP3 player, camera and a few other things, we got to discussing why I like WM so much.

Here's a shot of some of my old stuff next to what I'm 'lugging' around these days. Beach plans got cancelled so I thought I'd spend a few minutes just for fun. I stopped just before unhooking the computer, DVD player, video game system, getting the video camera, digital voice recorder, Road Atlas, cook book, photo albums, etc because I realized I could probably have spent much of the afternoon before running out of ideas... eg (I had just started in on the 3rd party apps with the dictionary) Not to mention my table just isn't that big! I thought twenty minutes of an absolute waste of time would fit well into this thread.

Neo, I like the Blackberry 8310, I gave one to my ex.

I am using the E71. I have had it for about 1 week and I am really digging it. You see how crappy most cell phones are made when you pick up this phone, it is great.

Yeap . . . the 8310 is great , and about the E71 , my good old friend RayanMX has one , and I have played with it , it is a very fancy phone dude , kind of heavy but it is because it is so well made

Posted by: richy240

Wow, lot's of WM defectors here! I never thought I'd see the day! I must admit, I'm using a BlackBerry these days too. (I just got it actually.) Like Neo I'm sick of the same old crap, and I am looking forward to Android and WM7. And the iPhone, well the iPhone (more Apple than anything) is dead to me.

And regarding post count, I don't remember posting in here 67 (now 68) times! Hmm...

Posted by: neo001

woooow that is so true Richy , I never ever not even on my wildest dreams will I thought I was going to be using a BB , boy this guys in WM really have a lot , a lot to learn , IMHO WM developers really need to use what they sell , I bet you if they spent a week with a device , they will know what I am talking about

Don't get me wrong , I still think that WM is the most powerful OS out there , they just need to take a little from here and there and make it perfect , then again if they make it perfect they will never sell again huh

Go figure . . . but for now BB RULES !!

They both suck. One is just more stable and secure than the other - I'll give you one guess which is which. Ok, this may be over-simplifying it a bit, but whatever. You guys know what I mean.

I must admit though, the more I explore BlackBerry, the more I like it (and I haven't really found myself missing any specific aspect of WM either, which I find strange since I've used it for 4+ years). There are security features built into this device that I never even considered myself, such as the ability to leave Bluetooth discoverable, but disallow access to your contacts via BT and enable/disable specific BT features (take a hint Apple).

I know, this isn't a BlackBerry forum, but since we're on the topic, I thought I'd throw that out there.

I never thought I'd see the day when my Own Sage..who helped me when I was first learnin WM has abandoned me for Blackberry. Yes, richy, I'm looking @ you..it's like Obi Wan Kenobi going to the Dark Side and killing Anakin before he became Darth Vader...It's like Bobby Bonds Breakin Barry's arms before he made it to the majors..why richy why'??!?!?

I'm bored...

Lol, I'll be back... When WM7 is released, and the bugs worked out, I'll be back on the bandwagon. And as I said before, I'm also keeping a close eye on Android.

Microsoft just needs to get their crap together and make some UI enhancements, security upgrades, etc. (and a zoom-able IE is not much of an enhancement). I guess what I'm saying is that WM is too stylus-centric. The buttons are small, and it's designed for "pen computing". Well, most of us are too busy for this and it's just not practical anymore. I understand there will be some changes coming soon related to WM devices in the Enterprise, which I am very excited about, especially from a Network Administration standpoint. Allowing control of a WM device via Group Policy is pretty exciting, and I am interested to see how this will compare to the features already in BlackBerry/BES.

Here's how I see it:

Just my 2¢

Quote:

Well, as I mosey through the config screens I find features that I had no idea existed (and certainly don't in WM), like the Bluetooth security features I mentioned earlier (as you can see, a solid BT stack is very important to me). I realize that the BlackBerry OS isn't as accessible as WM (it's certainly as in-depth, I suspect), and I don't disagree with you at all. But I'll trade stability and security for access (especially considering things I don't NEED access to) any day. I am just considering this fact, however, as I just started using the BlackBerry platform. These features coupled with having a BES on the back-end processing email, etc. makes for a very desirable Enterprise platform.

Anyway, like Neo I've tried A LOT of different platforms and I'm sure BlackBerry won't be my last. I'm not loyal to ANY platform, I just have preferences. And those are fleeting at best.

EDIT: I should also mention that I am an Enterprise network admin, and that is where a lot of my Enterprise-related concerns come in. I support many of the platforms mentioned above, so I understand the pros and cons of each platform in an Enterprise environment, and this ultimately plays into my decision whether I use my device in an Enterprise environment or for personal use. I like business devices, even for personal use, so yeah... There's that.

see this is where the whole young v.s. old clash beings. For us youngin's, we like the whole stylus thing, it reminds us of all those corporate types who used Palm Pilots back in the 90's. I certainly don't mind a mix of stylus and Finger input....

Posted by: richy240

Oh, well, this is all personal preference anyway. I am just stating my opinions and concerns.

Posted by: HTC_S60_Fan

of course, it's all relative in the end..I'm still shocked tho...it's like u decieved..u told me WM was sooo cool....lol

I RLY AM BORED!

Posted by: richy240

Well, WM is cool. I've just been using it too long, and I have less time to dedicate to memory leaks, the stylus, etc. Keep in mind, all the while I was using WM I was also using other platforms. I had two phone lines for a while: business and personal. Now I got rid of my personal acct with T-Mobile, and I'm using AT&T strictly for work so stability is VERY important now.

Posted by: maevro

Neo, you think the E71 is heavy? It is metal and solid, not cheap platis like most phones so thats why I don't mind the extra weight personally.

I will always like WM the best, but its too all over the place for me. I with the E71 was touchscreen but its still a great OS.

Dude . . . how long have you been using WM ?? believe when I say what I say , and again not that I need to justify myself , but since it seems like I need to say it again here it goes : I AM NOT SAYING THAT BB IS BETTER THAN WM

I don't care what you use , what you think , or say , it's just that I have been using WM for the longest
(maybe not as long as you )and now I am bored to death with it , nothing new , nothing good , nothing to make me keep on using it , I maybe go back if WM07 is exciting enough , but for now . . . nah !!

No dude . . . you misunderstood me , or maybe I was not clear , it is heavier than I expected , but dude the quality is grrrrreeeeeaat !! (in the words of tony the tiger) heck I will love to have a blackberry like that , heck I wouldn't mind getting one , congrats on an awesome device dude !!

Thanks, us corporate types from back in the 90's appreciate that. The jurassic period of PIM is not often recognized. I hoping to see a discovery channel documentary, appropriately placed near an episode of big foot "wood knocking" to his freinds.

I certainly understand and have asked myself "why am I still doing this", whatever it is.

Back-to-basics and choosing to do what I am passionate about has always been the right thing. Stay on the path.

Best of luck, let us know how the transition goes

A few years ago I bought two iGO chargers at RadioShack. 1 for the Car, one plug in for the house. It has replaceable tips that you buy for each new phone. My Tilt is the 4th phone I have used it on. So you could by the iGo, and have to believe there is a tip for the iPhone. And keep it for your next phone, just buy a new tip

The remarkable things for me is it has lasted 4 phones. It is really sturdy. I got the iGo because I went through 2 car charges each for my treo 180 and treo 160. I asked radioshack how to fix that. i GO

(The "i" part precedes the i phone, so it is not specifically for the iphone)

Hey Neo. Actually a question for you. I see you have the an 8GB SDHC. How is that working for you?

Do you know what speed it is? There is class 2, 4, 6 and 8, class 8 being the fastest. I found a 4mb class 6 and it works pretty good. It helps if launching apps off of the memory card.

Loved the joke btw

It works great , I am using it on my Curve 4.5.069 , no problems what so ever , and it is an 8gb class 6 , which I am also going to be using on my Bold , yeap I am getting my Bold , next monday at the latest

Using A-data Class-6 8GB cards on the E71 & Bold. Great write speeds!

Agreed. I got fried once early on when internet buying became popular. Now one of my 'sorts' of prospective companies to buy from includes a review of ratings. If # ratings < 100, or if ratings are all over the place, I move up a price notch.

And cards are flaky and can be DOA. I want to easily get that fixed.

Thanks

Awesome! Let us know how you like it when you get it going. You have ATT so its "plug and play" with the sim card?

Same headset, same files? Just different phones? I found I had to play with my settings in WMP for converting and transferring files to get better results. I also took some mp4 files from my kids itunes. Majorly louder! Not sure why the difference.

I have the jabra BT headset / stereophone combo. They sound ok, and was not expecting stellar performance out of them. Just easy to carry.

I was using the S9 with my TyTn II and I'm using the Nokia headphones that came with the N95.

Not too impressed with it's web surfing abilities. Browsing is slow as molasses, and I do a lot of casual browsing! Except for it's excellent video and audio playback capabilities, I prefer the E71 for everything else.

Looks like I'll probably pass on the Bold as well.

Neo:

Even on WiFi sitting next to the router, www.howardforums.com gives you about a dozen hourglasses before download is completed. You cannot scroll down that much while the hourglasses are there. Even Opera Mini takes a while to d/l vbulletin pages.

Much has been made of Blackberry's new support HTML email. What's NOT mentioned is this: You get HTML email, but you don't get graphics by default. Then you have to choose Menu/Download graphics, at which point it downloads as slow as a drunken turtle.

BB BES is great, but BB BIS sux. It's so crippled that even Nokia's email implementation via IMAP is better (Nokia allows folder viewing, BIS doesn't). I also like Nokia's implementation of HTML email: Shows up as an HTML attachment in email. You click it, then the page opens up in the browser with all browser related functionalities. However, this can't compare with the iPhone: iPhone does embedded HTML email second to none.

Placing the Bold next to the E71: Hummer next to Ferrari. I prefer Ferraris

JwY:

I hope you didn't get discouraged by my post. To each his his own. Jorg and Brian love their Bolds and will have many negative things to say about the E71. In the end, it's all about what you want.

I know.
I'll most likely end up with the Treo Pro or E71 depending when I have time to get one and set it up (or if the Treo is available by then). Originally I wanted to get the E71, but held off due to some of the reported reception inconsistencies. I suppose you're not having those issues?

Nope. However, I'm not as picky as Wirelessgal and others It's true that 2G-3G switching isn't instantaneous. However, you can just switch it yourself if need be.

I would say wait and see. I have never owned a BB, but I have watched and talked to many BB owners. Performance has always been a big thing. 1) give it a chance. 2) talk with the carrier and/or BB. There might be settings or rom update or? They don't want owners to feel that way

So Mike, to steer this back off the road.. A duck walks into a bar with his new BB Bold. He says, "bartender I can't connect". The bartender says "wifi is not free here". The duck says....

Neo, if you liked your Curve, you will love your Bold! The Bold is better in almost every way. The only thing I liked better on the Curve was it's keyboard. I'm just saying that the Bold's Browser doesn't keep up with it's 624mHz CPU and HSDPA speeds. I think you'll like it. I'm just a bit too pickey on the browsing / HTM email side o' things

So I have had this Diamond for a month now and I still love it more then the day I bought it.

It really does everything I want it to do and more. I really am proud for taking HTCs back all these years. The Diamond is far superior over the Touch Cruise and is up there with the Trinity. Along with the HTC Universal, this Diamond is on that short list and with the enhancements that you can find on xda.

I am glad everyone seems to be happy. Neo is loving his Bold, Jerry is enjoying his Diamond

Are you guys sure it doesn't also have something to do with the firmware version? I have loaded various "Today" themes, with no results.

Also, I just scored a T-Mobile G1 and it ROCKS! Yes, there are a few glitches, but I expect them to iron them out soon, or let's hope!

We've got HSUPA here... What part of town were you in? I don't use 3G on AT&T anymore (currently using an EDGE-only BlackBerry 8800), but when I had my Tilt I had the little "H" icon all the time.

I was all over. I was staying on the border between Cypress and Houston jus off Eldridge. I was @ the Texans Game against the Bengals. I was downtown alot but also near the Galleria. I was getting great HSDPA speed but not HSUPA...never more then 250kbps on the Uplink.

You should go pay my peoples over @ the AT&t Store in Willowbrook mall a visit. I hear they have the AT&t Bold.

Holy **** - you were staying REALLY close to my house! I basically live in the 290 & West/Eldridge/Hwy 6 area. Wow.

The interface isn't as "smooth", but otherwise it's got all the features it needs to compete. And in my mind, the openness of the device makes it come out on top. Also the general architecture of Android will make the iPhone OS obsolete as soon as different hardware configs (front-facing keyboards, larger screens, etc) are released.

Overall, I'm impressed. There's a bug in the latest firmware that makes data unavailable from time to time (ok, most of the time), but it worked GREAT before the update was installed. I sure hope they get that fixed soon.
