SLVR L6: how do I know I missed a call?

I just got an L6. There don't seem to be any side lights and the backlight automatically goes off after 60 secs max, so how do I know when I've missed a call or message? This is replacing a Siemens M55 which has sidelights which go off whenever a call/msg is missed and I'm starting to realize how good that was. What's the best way to get this phone to flash or otherwise call to my attention that a call was missed or a txt was received?
