best introductory smart phone?

i've been in telecom for over 2 years now, but i have never been in an environment that has been business oriented, and pushed smart phones.
since the smart phone market has been steadily increasing and i am beginning to see the day to day benefits of having such a device for my university/work scheduling, i'm looking into purchasing one soon.
here's what i've looked at so far:
blackberry pearl
moto MING (a1200)
SE p990
nokia e61
SE m600
motorola Q (future released)
a few HTC's.

i've always been a strong supporter of SE handsets, but i fear they are simply not as competitive in this market, so i'm putting my SE bias aside.
my price range is anything up to $800CDN ($700US), and i would prefer a 2mp camera, but it is not a deal breaker.
also battery life is quite important, and a touch screen is preferable (qwerty is not necessary).

so far, i have found the a1200 to be the most appealing in terms of price/performance, although it is not nearly as versatile as some of the other choices, and it's a motorola (i generally look down on moto's...hhaha).

can anyone recommend anything else? or is the a1200 a good choice?

Ming is worst choice among them all.
WHY?
- no third party apps
- frustrating preloaded apps
- Dumb Calender and contact manager

Forgot to mention

Go for P990 if you can afford

otherwise find a P910i, or Look for a good plan on verizon for PALM 700w

If you scan the forum you will find that the p990 is not a good choice. It is probably the most advanced phone available feature-wise but not the most stable.
BTW: I have one, so I can confirm its not a good choice if you want a reliable device.

get the E61 if u dont need a camera, cuz nokia's most user friendly to my opinion, and the qwerty keyboard is great. really stable OS!!

I've owned many Nokias and Motorolas and the A1200 is THE best phone yet. It's Linux-based (read "very stable"), great RF, has real voice recognition, a QWERTY keyboard or handwriting for data entry, and is the perfect size.

Get it, you won't regret it...

Cant seem to fine a lot of info on that A1200. Most sites just give the obvious.

Are there 3rd party apps available for this phone?
BTW: Couldn't even find it on the motorola site, how old is this phone anyway?
