Anybody have any opinions on notebooks with 3G built in? The good, the bad, the ugly? Brands, reception, etc.

My Sony Vaio has a built-in EDGE modem, but no UMTS/HSPDA...

I'm guessing because they are a Mac fan.

But there are one or two data cards compatible with mac

I'm not a big fan of getting a laptop with any cellular data card built in. The way the technology changes, you will most likely be adding some external device for data before you get rid of the laptop. Besides, what if you want to change cellular carriers? I say you should save the difference and get a data card, or a 3G phone and tether.

I would recommend tethering a 3G phone as the best option .. gives you flexibility in terms of what you can do ..

Loveno laptops have built in data cards it is better if it is built in the laptop that way you free up the slot in the laptop.

If it is built in like Thinkpad (Lenovo) WiFi, then you would also get the advantage of having the antenna in the LCD housing.

Both my son and I have Thinkpads with 3G cards. Having them built in would nice when in a car - one less thing sticking out the side to be bent. But, the upgradability would be a concern of mine. With the difference I have seen in signal strength between the Novatel and Sierra Wireless cards i would rather have the card and make sure I get the best one available - not whatever the computer vendor thought was good enough for us.

I would still stay with the PC card based on my experience.
