Motorola KRZR K1m How to uploadm Ringtones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: skippy69

HOw about a new thread about uploading ringtones. I have ready a few posts and they are all over the place. How about a place where we can all post our findings.

Posted by: eVision

I would like to know.

Posted by: i30d

Yes! new thread ASAP, these bulky threads are too time consuming. Why can't we get a straight answer on these k1m ringtones?

Posted by: jdm roxorz

i jsut copied the songs to the tf card and then went into sounds and switched the storage device to tf. then I pressed options on the song I wanted and selected copy and chose the phone. It copied to file to the phones memory and it works fine as a ringtone.

Please repost in layman terms.

Using Mobile Phone Tools is a real easy way. Pick any MP3 you want, clip what you want as a ringtone and MPT will put it on the phone. Have loaded a bunch already. MPT will do the same for any ringtone file. (Motorola supported of course)

It would be important for you to clarify WHICH WIRELESS CARRIER you have... as your profile is not filled in...

Remember... Verizon locks down some of the features on their phones... Alltel doesn't... so Verizon and Alltel users can't always use the SAME processes...

yes but KRZR K1m does not have the required features yet on the motorola phone tools. It only contains the regular features for now.

I thought it worked if you set the phone as a V3mm

MPT v4.36 is out (via Live Update) which does support the Krzr K1M however, remember... Verizon's limits... so you need to seem edit to re-enable compatibility on the phone... AND get MPT configured as the K1Mm...

Any word out there yet on what seem edits are needed? I noticed the new version the other day, and its K1m support, but beings as I don't have the phone, I haven't had a chance to try it out. That 20% off coupon for motorola's website is making it extremely tempting...

Posted by: veilside_gsr

will that copy and paste nonsense work for the k1m for sprint?

Posted by: veilside_gsr

im not sure if this version will be washed out like all of verizons phone. man i miss gsm...

Posted by: Ged325

Which seem edit for compatibility? I set the K1MM as the phone in PST to get the multimedia studio. Only problem is when I upload (MP3 or MID) it uploads to "Audio" rather than RingTone. Any Suggestions?

Have a look at some of the MANY KRZR K1M treads in the Verizon/Moto section....

It appears 2742/6A/bit0 does work... as does the seem edit for the Phone ID string...

Ah ha, thank you. I have been browsing those pages frequently, but with as long as they are, some of them I don't get all the way through, even using the search function.

Posted by: jdm roxorz

sorry i was half asleep when I typed that. I just copied the mp3 from my micro sd card to the phones memory and it works fine except that it plays the whole entire song.

I haven't been able to upload ringtones to my KRZR using MPT...and I wonder if my software version is the reason since it seems that other people have had success.

My KRZR's software version is 24.1_00.25.0C.

I have the latest drivers and I'm using MPT 4.3.6c.
See post 1272 for more on the Motorola USB Drivers and Motorola Software Update.
I have no problems using P2Kseem and P2Kcommander.
I've seem edited 2742/6A/bit0 (checked) and seem edited my phone id from K1m to K1mm (optional really, makes it easier for MPT to detect properly and enable Multimedia).
See Mark's how-to on seem edits...

Under MPT's File Transfer Studio, I can copy an MP3 to the phone...after the copy, the file appears in the "audio" folder.
The MP3 does NOT appear in the list of available ringtones NOR under My Sounds...the phone doesn't show the MP3 anywhere in the GUI.
The same thing happens when I use the Melody Studio.
If I rename the MP3 to MID and copy it to the phone (first deleting the MP3 on the phone), the MID appears under Get It Now->Music & Tones->My Sounds... , but not in the ringtone list.

I next tried the email method...but first, I deleted my test MP3's or MID's from the "audio" folder.
See Mark's how-to for more info... Note: I did not rename to MID first as noted in Mark's how-to.
I emailed the MP3 to my phonenumber@vzwpix.com email address.
After receiving the msg on my phone, I open the msg, the MP3 begins playing automatically, I choose Options->Save Sound and Ok thru the name prompt...note: it stops playing as soon as you select Options.
Now the MP3 is saved as a ringtone...it's in my ringtone list...it's in the "ringtone" folder (as viewed thru P2Kcommander)...
If I rename the MP3 to a MID and email it, I can save it, but not as a ringtone...it goes to My Sounds...same as the MPT transfer.

Can anyone who has successfully used MPT to upload ringtones post their phone's software version?
It can be found under Settings & Tools->Phone Info->SW Version->Software Version.

BTW, I have successfully used P2Kcommander to load ringtones, but deleting the MyTonesDB.db causes all the ringtone/alert sequences to change, and as such, all the current assignments are thrown off.

Appologies to the Ho-Fo moderators if this post belongs in the Verizon-Moto forum.

Posted by: PCGuRu2K

My KRZR's software version is 24.1_00.25.0C as well. All I've been using to upload .mp3 ringtones to my phone is P2KCommander. Once I finish copying it to the phone I just delete my MyTonesDB.db and I can play and assign the .mp3 as my default ringtone.

Posted by: Osirus

My KRZR S/W version is 24.0_00.26.08 I am using MPT version 4.3.6c I just transfered the mp3 into the audio folder using file transfer. It shows up under sounds and ringtones.

Don't know if makes a difference who the provider is. But I have Alltel so its the CDMA version.

Posted by: RodrigoKim

did anyone get it working with the vzw K1m?

It makes a huge difference for VZW users. Alltel and US Cellular use virtually the same firmware. VZW has a proprietary (used only by VZW) firmware that cripples many of the K1's advanced features. Sprint has its own customized firmware, but doesn't cripple anything.

Humpa, I re-tested ringtone uploading using MPT (see my earlier post in this thread) with my KRZR defined as a V3mm...
There was no difference...still not working.

You don't get the multimedia studio icon and features, or is is just that the ringtones don't save to the correct folder?
Audio, pics, and videos can't be transfered at all?

Posted by: SiR_gPm

Just copy the tones to the TF and the move them to the phone

Sorry, I'll be more specific.
MPT looks and behaves the same regardless of whether my KRZR is defined as a v3cm, a v3mm, or a k1mm.
Multimedia Studio is available.
Transfer of pics and videos between phone and PC is fine.

Only the ringtone transfer doesn't work.
Ringtones go to the audio folder.
If they're suffixed with .MID, they show in My Sounds on the phone.
I can move the MID between the TF card and the phone's memory, but it never shows as an available ringtone.
When suffixed with .MP3, they show nowhere on the phone.

howd you get media studio to appear on the mpt with a verizon phone?

To get it to "appear" and "work" are TWO different things...

see -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/V710_MPT.htm

Posted by: RodrigoKim

hmm dont know wheteher i should do it or not. im kind of unclear ont he instructions and i dont want to screw up my phone.

Posted by: dobie93

well I too can be added to the list of VZW users with this phone where all MP3's transfer to the audio folder, I have tried copying them to the transflash sounds folder then moving them to the phone but they never show up from the phone and I have yet been able to transfer any file into the ringtones folder and have it stay there. Let me know if you have any luck.

Posted by: chrischoi

mine uploads as audio and it shows up in the sound files. if you have sprint. you dont need to cut and paste. just hit copy to mobile and it'll show up with the rest of your ringers.

Posted by: A. nasir

there's something weird going on with my KRZR for sprint; i have been able to put the ringers onto my phone, but after i assign them to a contact or as a default, i get a loud beeping sound for my ringtone. Now when i try to use a ringer that came with the phone, the same thing happens....what's goin on here????

Posted by: Madseason41

To get ringtones to work on a Verizon K1m you must use p2k commander and Motorola Software Update. Open MSU and connect phone. When it recognizes the phone then open P2K commander and you can copy ringtones to phone. Rename them the same name as an existing ringtone to get them to ring and vibrate.

Posted by: A. nasir

im still confused on how to get the ringtones to work.....they're already on my phone, but it plays a tone thats not even selectable...why is that?

Okay So I called Motorola... Their agents say that Motorola Phone Tools is not supported for Sprint phones at this time. Apparently Sprint hasn't given the OK on it being compatible. Seemed like the never said it wasn't compatible just that it wasn't supported. So I too took a risk and purchased MPT 4.0. Then did the live update and it downloaded the 4.21 and 4.36 updates. After the downloads were complete I had to shut down MPT again and then restart it before I could successfully get the Updates to install. If you finish the download and then click the install link it does nothing.

Anyway, it looks like you can use .m4a and .mp3 files as ringtones using MPT. As far as transferring information to the phone the only way I have gotten it to work is to put the empty microSD Transflash card into the phone and to start the Music player one time, Clicked the Player tab and then "All My Music". Then after that I hooked the phone up to MPT and transferred the files in to the MMC directory then the "Music" folder or put it in my Card adapter then reader and put the music (.mp3 or .m4a) files in the "Music" folder. After that I went back to the music player and then clicked "all my music" again and it populated all of my songs.

By talking to the Motorola Agent they said that songs with titles longer than 49 characters won't be seen by the phone so make sure you have short file names. If you rip mp3's from Windows Media Player it can give you ungodly long names. Unecessary in my mind as the information seems to be inbedded into the song anyway somehow.

As far as using MPT and syncing calendar and contacts. That seems to have some bugs. Easy to put the contacts from phone into Outlook but had some troubles doing the reverse. When I tried to save the contacts to the phone it didn't stick. I'd like to get that working.

Overall the Motorola agents were awesome. I think they'll get things ironed out in the near future. Sure there have been some bugs I'm sure with some people's phones. Mine flies! No problems yet. They told me software updates should be available in the near future. Check back I'll post the link when I get it.

I doubled-checked both of these edits, and both are set properly. Yet I still can't see the MultiMedia Studio. I have MPT v4.3.6c.

Is there more I have to do?

Thanks!

Did MPT autodetect your phone before or after you did the phone ID string seem edit?

If before... either tell mpt to detect your phone again.. or manually configure it...

SETUP menu -> General Setup -> Communication tab -> Change Modem -> click Next -> (select device screen, highlight your Moto USB modem) -> click Next... and continue from there...

First, thanks for answering. I know you get pulled in a million directions and I appreciate the help!

I'm pretty sure it detected after. Anyway, I tried both auto-detecting and manual detecting again. I even tried the v3cm instead of the k1m. Neither changed anything.

So I figure I didn't do the seems right. But 2742/6a/0 does seem to be set to 1. And the phone ID is k1mM (looks like unicode). Is that right? The two m's, with the last one capitalized?

All the other seems have worked no problem. And the ringtones was the thing that got me started down this path.

Thanks,

Jim

MPT Screen Shot

Have you turned your phone off/on... after saving the seem edits to the phone?

Also.. on that 2827 screen shot... something looks REALLY WRONG... the upper right still has the 2742 seem "description" and the offset/bit descriptions are listed in the LOWER window for 2742/6A/bit0 when you have no offset highlighted!!!

Example see -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/images/E815-ID1.jpg

Notice how the box in the upper right says...
Code:
Seem 2827 record 1 E815/V3C Phone Identification bit map

and at the bottom where the bits are... there are NO descriptions....

Start over.

1. power off phone and unplug it from the pc
2. shut down/exit all apps on the pc.
3. download the P2KSeem for V710 from -> P2KSeem4V710.zip
4. power on the phone, and reconnect it
5. start MSU, wait for it to show the ESN number from your phone.
6. start P2KSeem for V710.
7. when P2KSeem says CONNECTED, Fill in Seem 2827, bytes 0000 (or you can use 22).
8. click LOAD FROM FILE.
9. Open the pre-edited 2827 seem file I told you to download.
10. Click SAVE TO PHONE.
11. click the RESTART PHONE button in P2KSeem.
12. While the phone is restarting... close P2KSeem and MSU.

Now try MPT, and use the menu to have it re-detect your phone.

I had noticed that when loading the seem, but didn't think too much about it since the data it loaded looked correct. I figured it might be a k1m quirk since it still seems less supported.

Anyway, after using your p2kSeem, it looked right and it worked when I started up MPT. This is great!

Thank you very much for all your help sorting this out!

Jim

Posted by: tramane

I followed these instructions exactley and they worked. As far as no brick and device bieng detected in MPT as k1mm. But still when i transfer ringers it gets put in the audio folder and i cant find it on the phone.
What am i doing wrong here?

Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) is now available in 4.51c available via Motorola Live Update. All K1m phones should be able to use MPT to transfer ringtones with the exception of Verizon(They only can do contacts and calendar in MPT). Telus in Canada might lock out the feature as well. Alltel and all other carriers for K1m allow transferring ringtones. MPT Transfers cropped files at 32 kbps in an .mp3 format to the phone's memory to take up the least amount of space. Why have a 4 MB file on your phones memory and take forever to load?

As far as using a song as a ringtone. Using your USB cable and up to 1 GB MicroSD card you can transfer a file to the card and then "Set as Ringtone". (With the exception of Sprint, Metro PCS, and Verizon)To transfer files to the card using the phone and USB cable go into:

Settings> Connection>USB Settings>Default Connection(USB Drive/Memory Card).

Your phone will become a very expensive card reader at that point. Make sure to change it back to (Modem/Data Connection) after you have transferred the files and always "Safely remove Hardware" before you disconnect the phone.

I recommend .mp3 files 30 seconds or less because I don't wan't to listen to your song ringing for more than 30 seconds and if your voicemail doesn't kick in no one wants to wait 4 minutes to get your voicemail.

If you have Sprint you have to use MPT to put ringtones on your phone.
If you have Metro PCS you can use a separate card reader or use MPT to put ringtones on your phone.
If you have Verizon, you are out of luck. or try This http://www.myxertones.com/default/

Turn your Roam ringer from "Distinct" to "Normal" When you have it on Distinct it will sound like a European Cop Siren. Settings>Sounds>Ringer Type>Roam Ringer

And update your software by going to Settings>Phone Info>Update Phone SW

IF you use Melody Studio feature of MultiMedia Studio, it re-encodes as 32kbit/22khz/mono. If you use File Transfer Studio, they get transfered untouched.

I have NOT seen a CDMA moto that allows files stored on the MicroSD card to be used as RingTones. I.e. they have to be in the phone's memory.

In most cases the amount of time the phone rings is dependant on the wireless carrier.. not how long the ringtone file is on your phone... i.e. even if you use a 4min song as a ring tone, Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile will send the call to voice mail after about 25 to 30 seconds.

My K1m comes with multimedia studio feature enabled, I double checked it via seemedit seem2742, 6A..., it's checked.
I am able to transfer *.mp3 to phone by using the MPT multimedia studio, but the phone isn't able to show the uploaded ringtone in the list. It only showed the default ringtones. I tried both file transfer and melody, and also many different ringtones. What is the problem?

PS: pictures works fine, just ringtone, I am trying to transfer to phone, not card

should work if you delete mytones then restart your phone

Thanks. I got it.
Is it the only way that has been found so far? Seems a little crappy, kind of hard to see which is defult and which is mine. And it will be sorted alphabatically into the default ringtones.

No need to do a seem edit. You can just change a few 1's to 0's and vice versa in MPT and it will show the Multimedia Studio for Verizon Phones.

And with Windows Smartphones 5.0 and < if you have a whole song as a ringtone it play all the way through. In some cases it will continue to play during a call. My advice. Crop it down to thirty seconds and keep it stereo if you like.

the mytones file is just an index of all the rintones on your phone, when u del it and restart the phone it refreshes the list; that's why your tones work now.

Unfortunately I don't see any way to sort them unless you rename all your custom tones with like a's in front of the title so they are sorted at the top (alphabetically).

ok i hope that made sense because i am reallly reallly hung over right now.

I just FINALLY got it working on my Verizon K1m. Here's what I did:

After getting all the drivers installed, as well as Motorola Phone Tools and updates, download and install Motorola Software Update (MSU). You may(will?) need this to get P2k Commander to actually connect to the phone.
Download and install P2k Commander version 3.2.6.
Download and install BitPim. You'll need it for the very last step.
Start up MSU, then plug in your phone. It should have your ESN number pop up and show N/A for the other two options.
Start up P2k Commander, and allow it to connect to the phone. Go to the folder a/motorola/shared/ringtone/ and upload your ringtones. They will show up RIHGT THERE for you, but believe me you're still not done yet.
Open up BitPim, manually set the phone to be a V3C on whatever com port or Motorola USB modem works for you, and delete the TmpTneDB.db and MyTone.db files, otherwise when you try to set your new ringtones to work, the phone will just laugh at you and ignore you. You will have to do this whenever you put new ringtones on your phone.
Reboot the phone and enjoy!

Please note that I also did the E815 Obex seem edit and the K1m -> K1mM seem edit, which may or may not have had a hand in getting this to work. Special thanks to all the info on this forum and http://mark.cdmaforums.com for the info there.

I have used MPT with my friend's V3M without issue (set it as V3cm), but so far have been completely stumped in trying to use it with my parent's K1M...

so has there been any update to getting ringtones on the k1m via MPT? as has been said many times before, using MPT just makes the files go into the Audio folder- and they don't show up on any lists. I can use p2k, and it works. But, for my parents, it's not exactly an easy process in comparison to just using MPT and copying the files to the phone.

I've tried setting the phone as all variations of v3x and k1x, but to no success. has anybody been successful in using MPT to add ringtones to the KRZR?!?!

I think between the Verizon blocks and the need to reset the two files that seem to list the ringtones, using MPT isn't much of an option. Believe me, I tried for a solid week everything that was said on the threads here, and using P2k commander to upload with MSU, BitPim to delete the two files and restarting the phone has been the only thing to work. Yeah, it's a longer process, but why not just take care of it for your folks? Make it a monthly mothers/fathers day present

well, crap.

Doing it for them isn't the problem, it's just that it is a drawn-out process. oh well for now...

I can't manage to get MPT to recongnize my K1m. I did the necessary seem edits and double checked to make sure they saved to the phone. I am using version 4.36c of MPT, which seems to be the version I'm supposed to use. Any suggestions? I would use P2K Commander but I tried for a week to get it to work with my phone to no avail.

EDIT: Ok, actually, I got MPT to recognize it but I'm having the same problem that lots of people are having where I can't get the files into the correct folder on the phone.

MPT won't get it into the correct folder, no matter what you try (or so has been my experience). The best way to do it is to copy directly to the phone through P2k Commander. Try downloading the Motorola Phone Updater, and once you get it running plug your phone in. It should display a serial number of sorts and have two fields with N/A. Once you get that, minimize MPU (DO NOT CLOSE IT) and run P2k Commander. I used version 3.2.6, and got it to work no problem. From there you can copy files into the a/motorola/shared/ringtones folder. The secret I've found is using MPU so that P2k Commander has something to 'piggyback' its connection on, otherwise it won't connect. But, as always, your mileage may vary...
And remember, once you upload the ringtones to the phone, you have to close MPU and P2K Commander and start up BitPim, manually set it to use the Motorola USB Modem com port and set it as a V3c phone, and delete the two files TmpTneDB.db and MyTone.db and then reboot the phone.

you can save a step and just delete the files in p2k. all you have to do it navigate your way back to the root folder and delete the 2 files. click on reboot and you're done.

Okay, my problem is that my motorola motokrzr k1m wont let me make audio i put on it through the computer into ringtones. Not even using the phone tools Melody Studio works even thoguh i thing it says it should. I just want some custom stuff i have, i would buy it if they had it but they dont. Oh by the way i live in canada, and im using Telus.
