S46/Adapter & Nokia Headset Plug?

Silly question of the week!
I have now bought 2 different adapters for my S46 one from USA (S46, C25, C35, S25, S35, SL45). Phone recognizes the headset & changes profile.
& one from UK (A50/MT50/S45/ME45/SL42/M35/S35/C35/S25/C25). I was assured it would work. Phone recognizes the headset & changes profile.
Can't get either to work with my Nokia headset (Answer/end button) or Nokia headset basic.
Jack plug has 3 black bands. Can't see this as a problem, but can't get the headset to work. I don't want to buy more headsets, unless can make them work. Has anyone been successful with the adapters?

I also need headset for S40, the generic one I bought is very poor, sound & speak, useless. Any ideas, for reasonable priced deal.
