Some one please clarify this wi-fi issue........

I spoke to Verizon today and they informed me that if I got rid of my data package, I would still be charged for data sent (per kb) while using my wi-fi at home. I even have a text/flix/pics package on my phone but they said that it would not cover pics sent to and from my 6700. What the Fuc* is the point of having built in wi-fi if you cant receive and send date for free when using yore home account or a hot spot? Why do I even have a pic/txt/flix package while I have a data package? Every verizon rep I talk to tells me something different? ANYONE KNOW THE TRUTH??????????

If the Rep is telling you that either he is an Idiot that has no idea what he is talking about and should be out of the business or a lying SOB that is just trying to ensure you continue to pay for services you don't want and still should be out of the business.

WiFi has nothing to do with Verizon's systems and as a result of that Verizon has no way of knowing when you connect via WiFi. Therefore they have no way of measuring your WiFi usage so there is no way for them to charge you for that usage.

As I and others have said before there are basically 5 ways to connect your phone to the Internet or other devices.

Cellular connections such as the phone, 1X and EVDO - These all connect using the carrier's cell towers so they can measure usage and charge for them.

WiFi - this uses a 'local' transmitter/receiver withing 100 meters (open space less in a structure) and has nothing to do with the cell carriers equipment and as such the usage can not be measured or charged for.

Blue-tooth - kinda like the WiFi only weaker (about 3 meters vs 100) Again nothing to do with Carrier equipment

IR - like Blue-tooth but uses infrared (light) to do a "line of sight" connection. This means device A has to be able to 'see' device B. Again nothing to do with Carrier Equipment.

and Lastly

USB Cable - Again nothing to do with Carrier Equipment.

As you can see the only way a cell carrier can tell if you are using your phone to connect to something else is if it uses their equipment at some point to connect. If the connection never uses their equipment they can never measure that connection and can't charge for its usage.

If I was you I would file a complaint with the Store Manager about this "Agent" and his ditributing of false information.

Verizon reps lie and claim you need a data plan when you really don't. They will only bill you for data sent through their data network. You can get the phone to stop connecting or you can have them put a block on your account, or both.

Sanford, Thanks for the info. I agree with you but this ******* kept saying I was wrong. I even said, wtf is the benefeit of buying a wi-fi capable phone if you get charged for the data which is exchanged between the phone while using wi-fi. He said that the only thing the built in wi-fi could be used for is that if you were like in a hotel and they had wi-fi and you were not getting a good siganl from Verizon, then you could switch over and use your wi-fi. I told him, rep at the store, and the Verizon rep. on the phone, that was so fcn ridiculous...I told them that I was not happy but they said sorry. I even asked to speak with a data tech. instead of a customer service rep. and she said, "sorry I can't transfer you to them b/c I anwswered your question. " I was so fcn pissed. Anyways, thanks again......I hate Verizon more and more , as a gready company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SAnford, anyone.....

This is what I want to do, please let me know what is the best way to go about it. I want to be able to send/receive tex/pics/video from phone to phone. I want to sync my email with my phone when I am in a hot spot or when I am home so I can sync my outlook. I wont be using the net when I am not in a hotspot.

Heres what I have currently: I have unlimited in txt/pics/flix+500...Currently have their unlimited data package but I want to get rid of it. I am using the vx 6700.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

The truth is simple, you don't need a data plan to connect via WiFi Hotspot. The Rep was correct that if you were using the hotspot and the signal failed then your phone would try to switch to their data service but that can be disabled by removing the 'dial' number in the data setup.

If you are positive you will never use or need their service then try removing the "dial' number by going to start => settings =>connections => Connections => advanced => Select Networks and under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet ..." Select the entry for Verizon and tap edit twice, then select next record the info there and replace it with all zeros. Select next and delete both entries here. This won't prevent your phone from attempting to access the Internet via 'cell' it will just prevent it from ever connecting to Verizon.

If this works for the next month then tell Verizon to cancel you data option. document the name, time, date etc of who you talk to in the event the crop office tried to automatically put it back. Also inform that agent that if it isn't removed then yo will deduct it from you bill each month and note that the "fee is in dispute". If it reappears call Customer Service and inform them that you will be "disputing the data fee" and filing a complaint with you state Corp Commission. Again document all the call info.

I know this stuff is fact as I am a Telcom/Network Consultant and do this stuff for a living. I just don't use Verizon so they may have some special software on their version of the 6700 that disables all Internet access if the phone can't connect to their data service periodically.

Let me know if that works or you need more help.

Or you can simply click the icon at the bottom right that looks somewhat like a bullseye and shut off the phone-features while you're browsing via wifi.

and how the hell would verizon know that you're using wi fi lol. even when you setup Wap they dont know its data.
