Uploading Java Apps to VM phone???

I searched this one, and I didn find anyting which leads me to makeing this post.
I come from Verizon, and we have locked up brew, where the only way to get an application, is to download it. As far as I've heard, read, on phones with Java, such as my VM Slice, you can upload your own apps free of charge. I searched google for a good half hour on this one, and I havent really found a good tutorial on how to do this. If anyone can help me out a bit, I would appreciate this.
