ic502 (and ic902?) Ringtone Directions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

For the few....and the proud couple people out there with a ic series phone out there. Here is how to convert your music files so the can be ringtones on your phone. First we need to make a *.wav format file then convert it to the native ringtone format on these ic phones called *.qcp (Purevoice).

First make a wav ringtone as you would for any other iden falcon phone (i730, i860, i870 ect.) Directions on that are Here.

After you have the file you want in *.wav format you need to convert it to *.qcp so the phone can read the file. To do this download This program. Its called "Purevoice Converter" and all you do is drag and drop the *wav file directly onto the file "pvconv.exe" in the zipped file. This will create a *.qcp file with the same name in the folder with "pvconv.exe".

You now have your ringtone ready to be uploaded!

Use MPT4 (Motorola Phone Tools) and select V323 under CDMA as your phone. The ic502 is basicly this phone with a few add ons....like iDEN Wakie-Talkie. With these settings you can upload pictures and the ringtone(s) you just created to your ic502. Don't ask me where to get MPT from....you have to find that on your own, but it is out there.

Hope this helps somone.

Credit for the purevoice converter goes to FunForMobile.com

Pictures and ringtones uploaded to the ic502 do not go into the "my content" tab in the menu. They end up under the menu in "Settings". Sound for ringtones and display for pictures. They are loaded with MPT4 as a "stock" ringtone or wallpaper that came with your phone. You can choose them to be loaded as a ringer or wallpaper like any other file that was on the phone before.

How come the ringtone sounds like crap that I put on it? You can hear the vocals, but not melody.

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

because its .*wav....lol they all sound like poo. I'm looking into finding other supported formats later this week

Posted by: mashenbu

The sound quality on my ic502 is very good. The only thing is I can't see the ring tones in MPT4 that I download into the phone in *.qcp format. The ring tones work in that format but cant be seenby MPT4. Therfore I can't do anything to them once they are on the phone. So I have to make sure I dont put a messed up ringtone or I'm stuck with it.
(I have one already that doesn't play)

Anyone find any other format thats playable yet?

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

MPT4 automaticly puts those ringtones you upload in the phones root folder. Just go back untill yu see the files you uploaded and you can remove them.

In the next few days i'll try some testing with diffrent formats and freqencys and see if i can find any ones that work.

Hows the ic502 working out for you so far?

-ZeRO

Posted by: mashenbu

I found out that my auto update was turned off on MPT.... after turning it on and receiving the updates It worked as you described. Thank you.

So everyone make sure you have the most updated version lol

the ic502 is working out good .... except for at my desk lol one of the only places my 860 worked ok at lol. I was told that I should get a software update at a sprint store by customer care. The phone keeps saying that a new software is available but It wont download to the phone. she said that the download should help. I like the alarm and calender. and dont miss the camera since I really didnt use it. I do miss the assign ringtone to contact feature though alot!! The funny thing is I get dropped calls at (my desk)still but always when I speak to Customer care....hmmm or are they hanging up on me? lol

did you get the update? did it mess with the Ringtones or wallpaper?

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

mine alwaqys tells me to update also but never goes any farther when i select yes. I havent seen any updates for this phone on the moto site yet so i'm not sure if there is one out yet.

As for assining ringtones to individual people....you can do that :-)

Just go to contacts, select the person and hit options. Go to edit and hit right so you go over to the little "ID: looking icon. The first option is to set a picture for that person, I uploaded all my CID pics from my i870 to this and used them after editing the size down a bit in photoshop. The second option is the ringtone for that person.

Hope that helps.

Posted by: mashenbu

THanks for the info I got to assign ringers . I'll be uploading the pics from my 860 later. Also I should make it to the sprint store later today . I'll let you know if there really is an update.

Posted by: Gomer03

Ok....I used MPT 4 and put the standard .wav ringer onto it....works like a charm...no conversion needed.

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

will the phone play it tho? you can upload a mp3 ringer too but the phone just wont play it. If so whats the format you have the file in. what kbs and khz

Posted by: Gomer03

Doh...nvm...it doesn't work....

Posted by: billm261

I am receiving an error message #1012 while trying to update the phone. It states that it can not prepare vision services. I have Vision and it works fine.
Any Ideas?

Posted by: hmattyj

So nicely put, anyone should be able to do it!
THANK YOU!! I had been plagued with preloaded tones on my ic502 until I was tipped about this thread.
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! By the way... MPT 4 is awesome!! I purchased it outright, WELL worth it.. Lots of updates!! I think it's now ver. 4.26
Anyway.. You've made me very happy.
Thanks again.

No problem lol. Glad it helped a couple people so far. Hope it helps more as these phones are seen by more and more people. MPT is a really good product too and as you said if you like it you should buy it to support the authors so they can make more updates

Posted by: Skippy169

So I followed all of your information. I even purchased MPT4 outright. I loaded one ringtone onto my phone which i can hear perfectly when i go to the ringtone selector screen and click "listen". However, after designating this ringtone for use, i get silence when calling the phone. No ringer at all. When i use any of the default ringers i'm fine, but the one that i loaded won't play. Any ideas?

Posted by: rootdkj

This worked pretty well for me. I was able to load a few mp3's into the ic502. Then I got real excited and in my haste I transferred a bunch of wav's over. The phone recognizes that it's a ringtone and even shows it in the list but won't play it. MPT doesn't show it on the phone at all and to make matters worse I can't figure out how to delete it. I even went as far as trying to delete the audio path, but MPT wouldn't let me.

Any suggestions?

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

make sure you have the latest version of MPT, connect to the phone and go to the phones root folder, press the up arrow until you can't go any farther. This is where all the files sent to the phone go. When your there and you can see your files, select them and delete.

Hope that helps

Posted by: shelllie

hi I have the Ic502 -and I havetried to put on ringtones with MPT4 - I can listen but my phone does not ring with the asigned ringer - what do i need to do i tranferred them as WAV any info would be helpful

Posted by: oscar123

I can't seem to get the *wav. to convert into *qcp. I click and drag the *wav into the qcp exe. and all it does is move the *wav. into the zipped folder it doesn't convert any help would be appriciated.

Posted by: rootdkj

I got it now. I'm using MPT 4.36. Works great! The ic502 plays mp3's w/o a problem!!! Thanks.

I have purchased the MPT4 to download wav. was easy except when I made them ringers they don't work - I was able to delete them now could somene PLEASE help me with Pure Voice

Thanks

Posted by: hmattyj

Well, everything was working slicker than snailpoo for me....
Now, when I load a tone to my 502, somehow, MPT4 seems to convert my wav back to an mp3, then the phone refuses to play it. The phone sees it just fine, but think's it's 0 seconds long.
A little frustrating. Any suggestions?
Again, this has been a great learning experience.
Thank you very much.
Matt

Posted by: hmattyj

I just went to the File Transfer Studio, instead of using the melody Studio to transfer the file..... DOH!!!
I'm all set now.. Loading like a madman!!
Thanks Again!!! This is awesome.
Custom tones are the SHIZZZZ!!

Matt

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

lol everyone seems to figure out the problems after a few tries, so if your reading this....keep trying it will work after you try some things diffrent.

thanks for the nagitve comments pefore before yafigured this stuff out....

Posted by: hmattyj

The people who complain usually are the same people who demand answers.
That REALLY makes you want to help.... NOT!! haha
Everything is going very well for me. Again, the MPT4 program is absolutely
awesome.
Thanks again!

What resolution and file format are you using for wall papers?

I have tried .gif and .jpg, at 160 X 220 (i think, what ever the screen size is) and 150dpi and the black back ground looks crappy, fades out on the edges.

Posted by: deadlybatman

after you make your ringtone or wallpaper this is a good way to upload it.

http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/

it will text the link to you.
you just go to options and click on go to "link".
a warning will come on saying this file is not supported by sprint or something like that.
hit continue and it will download the file onto your phone then you can set it as a ringtone or wallpaper.

you have to use vision to dl so if you don't have a plan for it you'll get charged for using it.

oh ok i didnt even see that sorry. to me its easier than tryin to figure out the other stuff.

Posted by: ZeRO OF ALL

This is for people who don't have a vison data plan. Without that plan uploading files and having the phone download them will give you a BIG bill.....trust me i know.

but if you have unlimted data go for that its much easyer

Posted by: i870pimp

sent you a pm zero

Posted by: slowkarts

on my ic502 i actually do it this way i converted full .mp3 to .wav then wav to .qcp and the end .qcp size is 490kps

i convert the .mp3 to wav at
frequency 22050
bits 16
channels mono

i loaded them on my phone with MPT4 it was really easy

so far i put 2 full songs on this way, it works when people call and txt it sounds alright

i'm having the same problem, anyone have a suggestion. they sound real nice when you listen to them on the phone but it's dead silence when someone trys to call me. i followed the directions in terms of converting the files..etc

i can get the .qcp to work as a ringer but it sounds terrible which is why i would love to figure out how to get the .wav working when people call

Motorola phone tools doesn't detect my ic502 :"( Plugged in using a USB data cable. Any help out there for this? Thanks

How much space does this phone have?

Posted by: Ebonixx

I figured it out. but i have a question. What format should the ringtones be in? For my i836 its 8000kz, 8kps mono. Are there the same restrictions with this phone?

Posted by: guy2626c

Ok First off you need MPT4 obviously.
Second it's quite easy to put custom ringtones on this new ic502.
I had the same issue where i could listen just fine but when it would ring i would hear nothing.
This phone DOES play normal MP3's.
You need a program to edit your MP3 music files to cut them down to length.

I use Soundforge 8.0. but any MP3 editing program will work.
Then you use the Multimedia Studio/Moble Explorer tool, then just upload the ringtones to your phone.
They appear in the settings/sounds/ringtones area like the factory ones. They play and work when somebody is calling you.
However one peice of advice. If your song your using is very bassy or loud you might want to edit it a little so it doesn't sound like crap.

Posted by: beerdrink

what encoding did you use in terms of the mp3? can't get mine to play

Posted by: guy2626c

48kbps, 22050hz, mono

Posted by: beerdrink

i ended up just using a mp3 cutting program and took a normal mp3 and cut a section out, and it actually works when someone calls. sounds nice too

Posted by: t-roy23

Ok, i cut the time down to less than 30 sec. The ringer shows up on my phone, where it should, but when i try to play it, it says a handler is needed. Any ideas on what im doing wrong?

Posted by: t-roy23

Ok scratch my question, i got my ringers working. I used motorola phone tools deluxe, and you can cut them using this program. I have 16 bit 48000mhz stereo mp3 ringers on my phone and they work fine! The only prob is they are extremely loud, even with the vol on level 1. Does anyone know how to turn this down, or will i just have to use a mp3 editor?

Posted by: guy2626c

i think your gonna have to use an audio editor to reduce the volume. I had to do the same thing.

Posted by: xxw0lfxx

I've connected my phone to the pc via the cable, and loaded up MPT4. but it says it cannot find the phone on the list or something? What do i do

Posted by: bw83

im having the same problem i just got my usb cable in the mail today ordered it off ebay and it came with the mpt4 cd but it wont detect the phone when trying to install i got the ic502 is there a driver or something i need to download somewhere?

Posted by: bw83

i also went ahead and tried http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ that link and when i downloaded the file it said i needed a handler to play them any idea what that would be or where to get one?

Posted by: J-Bone

Like it said in the very first post...

Tell it your phone is a V323.

Posted by: Sick SRT4

I have had very good luck and high quality sound by uploading straight mp3 audio. It sounds better then almost any other phone I've had. I have tested a few ringtones up to about a minute long. Havent tried anything longer yet. I have tried with some WAV files and they didnt play when someone called.

MP3 FTW!

Posted by: xxxfeind

If you want ringtones that sound almost the same as if you were playing them with your mp3 player then follow these steps:

Open an mp3 in CEP 2,
Cut the song down to the part you want to use,
Convert the sample to:
44100 Hz
mono
16 bit
Then fix the sound by going into effects, amplitude, amplify:
cut the sound by -6db
Then save a copy as:
whatever.wav
file type Windows PCM (*.wav)
Exit CEP 2.

Plug in your phone and connect to MPT
open multimedia studio,
open melody studio,
open file you created,
click transfer to phone: This will convert the file on the fly to an mp3 file that sounds great on your ic502.

I hope this helps, if it isn't clear please feel free to re-write this tutorial.

wow!
thanks bro!
It sounds way better than I had them before.
The only thing is...it is a bit loud at certain parts of the song. I guess we could lower the db to under -6?

I'm gonna go to -9 and try it... it is really all on preference though. I'd just like to have it at a normal volume level.

Follow xxxfiends formula, and if you use motorola phone tools it will convert them to the proper format and load them on your phone.

Ok I must be dumb but I did this and MPT just keeps saying initializing...please wait and says my phone isn't connected. What am I doing wrong.

Posted by: TaZeNuTz

when you plug your phone in and the new hardware thing pops up install everything it says before you open phone tools. if that doesn't work then i don't know

Posted by: RyanAviar

Ok, i have the file ready, i have MPT4 ready, i have my data cable pluged in and the phone on, but my PC will not recognize the phone. I know the connection is there cause the phone will charge from the USB cable, but i dont even get the Windows beep when i plug it in. I have tried everything and searched high and low for a cure, but i cannot find anything. Is there a driver out there that i need or somthing. When i pull up MPT4 the picture of the phone comes up and just scrolls "Initializing....Please Wait" and then times out. What gives?

PS. I am going to try it on another PC tonight, but every other USB product i have ever tried on this PC works fine. I load stuff on my i850 all the time with no problems.

this thread has been more than helpful, i have an ic502. i see people saying they are getting clear mp3's to play. everytime i get a get handler error. as of now im converting my mp3 to wavs at 22050 freq, 16bit and mono and then converting it to .qcp and i upload them via funformobile or http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/upload.php everything is dandy im just seeing what the specs are to have the mp3 ringtones play on my phone just to be a bit clearer. thanks guys

Do i need 2 Download any other programs besides dBpowerAMP, and do i need a data cable?

Wierd...

Within the last couple of weeks, my ic502 stopped playing the ringtones I made when people call. If I go through the menus and play the files, they sound fine, but when people call - nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

are they still assigned?
Did you reset your phone?
did you bring it to repair and did they reset your phone?
Make sure they are still set to the contact/ringer??

Posted by: J-Bone

Yep, still assigned.
Tried switching them to one of the stock ones and back to reset the assignments.
Rebooted the phone, not sure if that's what you mean by reset; I don't have a manual, Operations Dept. at work just calls us in and hands 'em to us when it's time for a new phone, and then we're on our own.
Didn't bring it to a store yet.

Posted by: heatstar

The best way to get your ringtones on your phone is by using motorola phone tools and transferring them through there. I am able to use my mp3's as ringtones and all that good stuff. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!

I second that as much as i really dont like sprint phones (Which the ic902 really is ) i go to a site which i can be PM'd for. To send ringers directly to my phone thru text... Not all the ones i want but they are HQ ringers and Free

what is motorola phone tools

Posted by: santoro05

Well I got the ic902 this week. No matter what you do the ringtones don't sound half as good as the ones Sprint have. There has to be a way around this. Has anyone figured out the animated wallpapers yet?

Posted by: Kulrevon

I don't know about you but my ringers sound amazing on my ic902. Convert your trimmed MP3 to 64kb/s, 44,100 khz, mono.

and transfer it onto the phone.

Posted by: Kulrevon

actually I just realized that on the ic902 you don't need to convert or trim the mp3s at all. They play fine.

I loaded a couple of ringtones into the root of my ic902 is there any way to delete them now?

Posted by: ReniLyn

Anyone figure out how to add games & apps to the hybrid phones?

I've been able to delete a few, the ones that I WAS able to delete, I had to play with the media player, then push the right soft key "options" and then delete is a option from within there. It doesn't work for all of em though for some reason...Still tryin to figure out how to delete the others that I uploaded and don't want.

Posted by: codee

Figured it out. To delete Ringers you uploaded, goto Menu--->My Content--->Ringers Then highlight the one you want to delete, then push the right softkey (options) then delete. This worked for all the ones I loaded myself.

I'm on a macbook, anybody know where I can find these conversion programs that operate on Mac OS

My Ringtones Are Carrying To Much Bass After I Load Them. Anybody Know A Fix For This? I Tried Twerking The Freq. That Still Was Not The Fix.

Posted by: arvandm

Hey I used rumkin to upload a ringtone, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any fee or anything. I tried to click on the question link in the FAQ that addressed this issue but nothing happened, and all the other question links worked. My friend uses bluetooth to transfer his ringtones, does that work with ic902?

Posted by: Ricoch3T

I've tried everything with my datacable, doesn't seem like it will work for me.
Seems like I can get the file onto the phone, but it does not give me the assign option for anything I put on there.
So far i've tried to just upload mp3's, converted mp3's 64k 44100, 32k 44100, 32k 23(whatever the lower hz is).
Also tried the .gc .gcd file.
Converted to .qcp (i think thats it)
nothing seems to work.

Anyone know whats going on?

does anyone know how to delete mp3s? i tried using the my content method and the media player method but it delete isn't a option. i even tried a full reset and the ringtones were still there

Does anyone know how to access the native ringtones on an ic502 using MPT?

I can upload new tones just fine, but there are none others listed in any directory using File Transfer Studio. I want to download a couple of the native ones onto my PC, but they just don't show up.

Thanks..

Posted by: Radelon

These are the steps I take to do my ringtones.

1. Open my mp3 in MP3Cutter and select the part of the song I want.
2. Save the cut song as an mp3
3. Open CEP2 and deamplify the song.
4. Save the volume fixed file as an mp3
5. Change the extension to .qcp
6. Open File Transfer Studio in MPT
7. Upload the file to the Ringtones/downloaded folder on the phone.

Ringtones work great, perfect quality.

Posted by: Gizmo_04

I don't convert my MP3s at all and they play fine. This is what I do:

1. Select MP3(s) that I want to use for ringtones (can even be full length)
2. Rename the .MP3 to .QCP
3. Copy the .QCP to the /MEDIA/voicerecords folder on SD Card
4. Select the ringtone from External Memory in Settings/Sounds...

They play great, and sound great. I've used files in excess of 4MB so far with no issues.

The best part is that I don't have to copy them to my phone using MPT or any other tool. Why use up the "In Phone" memory when I can store and assign them from the SD Card?

Posted by: akm1user

when you rename your files from mp3 to qcp do you is it still an mp3 file?
I have so far done two files and only one works.. the other wont work on the voicemail.. help please wat do i do?

Posted by: Radelon

Yes technically it's still an mp3, but the phone recognizes it as a .qcp. I actually found that if you trim the mp3 with CEP and then change the amplitude, save as mp3, those files work also.

bits 16
channels mono

i loaded them on my phone with MPT4 it was really easy

so far i put 2 full songs on this way, it works when people call and txt it sounds alright

What program are you using to convert MP3 to .WAV?

Thanks, I did rename the files.. now i just have to recopy them. they didn't work the first time because the files were ringtone.qcp.mp3 (i didn't actually rename the extension) so now they are ringtone.qcp.
thanks I will let you know if this works.

.mp3's work fine....

I got 24khz mono mp3's to play just fine on my ic502 today just so people know cause its a ton easier then converting to qcp

I was able to upload small mp3 to ic 602 phone and it plays but not a larger file??

Posted by: Lox Wrecks

i found this a little challenging but in the end i prevailed....

the problem with the first file i uploaded to my wifes ic602... it was mp3... wouldnt work, kinda uploading in haste looking at the tutorials from harrythompson helps alot, but if you are missing one thing it will throw you completely off....

finally i decided to use the over the air uploader since i have the simply everything plan on both phones... and i realized after looking at the phone specs it said use qcp....

i used cool edit pro/adobe audition (dont ask me why i have it, i rap and it has options to record and convert sound files) anyways, i did a simple mp3 to wav conversion, then i used the recommended 8000/16/mono for the conversion from wav to qcp using the wav converter recommended by the secondary website provided by harry thompson, then resent the text message.... and it worked like a charm, clarity was ok, not like the clarity on my 880 (cus i really pushed the envelope with my conversions and file sizes and damn near got mp3 quality.... simply because its my phone, and not hers!)

I keep getting a "phone not supported " message on my ic 902 using MPT v5.05. My cpu recognizes the phone fine and even charges it via the usb cable, but after numerous tries, reboots, etc, MPT will NOT recognize the phone. Just says it's incompatible. Anyone else run into this problem using a ic902? I have a copy of MPT v4, but I have to burn the image I have to a disc. Will this help or should I just try renaming my mp3's on my memory card to qcp and see if that works?

Posted by: nightmarenyc

Well, I renamed the mp3 I wanted to qcp and copied it to my voicerecord folder on my memory card and worked like a charm. and this song was 4MB! Many thanks to Gizmo 04 as this is definately the easiest way to upload your own ringtones.

Posted by: sas7271

Could someone please tell me how to delete the preloaded ringtones on the ic502/ic602.
