Guys
I am trying to setup my new TyTN to use Cingular 3G/UMTS .. but for some reason .. it doesnt work .. which is a really breaking my heart because as per the 3G coverage map from Cingular my area (Dulles airport/Reston) has 3G coverage.
The details/settings are:
Device: Stock TyTN, HERM200, HT636 series
SIM: around 2 years old, 64K SIM (no 3G indications on it though)
ROMs: Original HTC ROM (07/22)
Bands: Auto, Auto
After soft-resetting with these settings, when the device comes back up, it shows the fabled "U", but then immediately the signal drops to zero and I am not able use voice or data.
TyTN only works when I set it to GSM, GSM (1900+850) + UMTS(1900+850) band settings, which gets me on the GMS network and gives me Edge speeds only (~130-140K). The signal strength is pretty good (3 to 4 bars)
Any thoughts regarding what might be going?
Thanks in advance for the help!!

you need to have a 3g card to get 3g speeds trust me

switch it at your local store tell you need a 3g card

You don't need a 3G card to use 3G. I promise. I get 700 - 800 kbps speeds using a similar 2G SIM. You may get slightly faster speeds with a 3G SIM (which remains to be seen; I've never read any proof of this), but a 2G SIM works just fine.
Now, the quality of the 3G SIM here in Houston is another story altogether. They still haven't perfected the 2G-to-3G network transition, so I often get dropped calls while transitioning between GSM and UTMS networks. After the first fropped call, I often cannot make another call for minutes afterward.
I had problems similar to your description when I flashed my TyTN with the latest 1.34 Cingular ROM, except my phone would drop the network either about 5 mins after booting the device or immediately when I attempted any sort of data transfer. It took me all of 15 mins to decide to switch back to the default 1.18 HTC ROM. That fixed the problem.

Ok, I'm an idiot. After closer inspection, it would seem that I do in fact have a 3G SIM. Sorry for the confusion. I would edit my previous post, but for some reason that is not an option now.
