I have a 6340i that I have tried painfully hard to keep. Finally got a rep who would let me convert to a family plan and keep the gait option on my phone. I just received my new i-mate jam and called customer service to try and add a data plan. I told them that I wanted to add the plan because I have a SMT 5600 that I would like to use, but still want to have my gait option. They are telling me that this can't be done. Is this true? Anyone else trying this? My wife and kid just got new phones last weekend and they put 64k smartcards in them. This should be compatable with gait options correct? Would it help to sign a new contract and get a phone that they supply?

Yes it can be done. But not with a 3G 64K card, it must be a non 3G 64K card or it won't work.
List the Gait phone as the phone you are using.(with it's corresponding IEMI number - needed to access TDMA)
Make sure the Gait option is on your account.
Add whatever the data option

Now when use the gait phone it will work, and when you use the SMT 5600 it will work with the data plan. I have been doing this for about two years using my Gait Phone and a Nokia 3220.

GAIT is the ability of a phone to support both GSM and AMPS/TDMA, and to switch between the two without turning the phone off. It does not mean the phone call can switch between the two.

The idea developed when GSM was being rolled out by Cingular and AT&T, who both had large installed bases of AMPS/TDMA equipment, as did their roaming partners.

Yeah, I'm wondering why are you trying to keep GAIT?

I agree with these guys - unless you have a reason not obvious to us, there really is no need for TDMA anymore, and it is going away everywhere for Cingular soon.
