ipaq 6925 pre release thread

so how long before it gets to everybody else...2 weeks?

Posted by: christian15213

If they sell one of these phones I want to google earth the persons house and conduct a special documentary of the trulest dumbest person on the planet.

Seriously they won't sell not ONE SINGLE PHONE.

Posted by: jrsmooth

Released to Premier for $409, new or upgrade.

Posted by: txschafers

On our premier site with no contract we can get it for $359.00

Why do you think no one will buy this phone? Other then not being 3G it looks pretty solid.

Posted by: maevro

Its not on Cingular's actual website yet huh? I was thinking of getting this phone with the upgrade I am due for and getting rid of this E62.

Posted by: aaadock

will this have the issue with the battery cover also .. man that was a headache.

Then get ready for a trip to the Caribbean, because I'll be buying this puppy in a couple of weeks. Some of us can't care less about 3G and will buy the phone for its form factor, built-in Wi-Fi , GPS and/other features that matter to us.

The built in GPS is pretty compelling. Plus the 750 does not have a good wifi solution.

Posted by: mej5s

What is this battery cover mentioned above?

Posted by: Omega2008

Ack its 750 bucks on premier! wow to rich for my blood.

YIKES!!! $350 on my premier site. In the past this phone has actually been priced a little higher then any of the Treo's and 8125's.

Posted by: maevro

What is the difference between this & the previous iPAQ? I heard the keyboard is much brighter in the dark but what else. I am not on the premier site so ill have to wait.

Posted by: mm42

In the now closed " iPAQ hw6925 (approved)" thread, a question was asked about showing / not showing SIM entries along with Outlook entries in "Contacts".

This is controlled via the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone\ShowSIM

0 = do not show SIM entries
1 = show SIM entries

This phone will ONLY be available through Premiere site or business group.

Or you could order the 6945 direct from HP for $599...

Linky

I don't know what the difference is between the 6925 and 6945, though the specs look the same. Very nifty PDA phone though. It's too bad us normal peons can't get the 6925 from Cingular though.

6945 is unlocked and the 25 is not. also I believe the 45 comes with a craqdle and the 25 with a sync cable.

It kind of makes sense tom only offer to the business route versus having to distribute them to retail chains. the guy at the local store here said he sold one 6500 series since it was launched. Probably not an average user buying this type of phone.

Yeah it does. I had a customer come in with 6 yesterday. Six brand new activations & 6 UNL PDA connects :-)

Posted by: txschafers

I have been debating whether to order this phone or wait for the 8525 or Treo 750. with the recent activity on the 8525 thread I may hold off for a couple of more days.

Posted by: maevro

I went into 3 cingular stores here in NYC today and they all said they should have this phone in the store within 2 weeks.

Posted by: maevro

Also, HP's website sells the unlocked version, but they also sell Cingular's branded version.

Posted by: FallN

I have a 6945 (and have had it for some time now). It is the SAME EXACT PHONE as the 6920/5 EXCEPT it is unlocked and unbranded by any carrier. all the phones in the 6900 series are identical in specs, OS, innards and "outards", except some are simply sold locked with carrier branding. The 6920/5 is the Cingular locked and branded version. My 6945 is the unlocked, unbranded version of the same device. I hope that clears that up.

As for the "battery cover problem", I also own an unlocked, unbranded 6515 and I have NEVER, EVER had any problems with the battery cover. Not one. The battery cover has no cracks and is solid when in place. It doesn't creak or rattle. It's perfect on both of my devices. But God forbid something should happen to it, HP will replace it free of charge.

I have had too much bad luck with TREO's. Went through 3 Treo 600's and one 650 before giving up and moving to a BB. Build quality was terrible. Had hardware issues with all 4. Finally gave up when the 650 refused to synch.

Posted by: DubDub

What data plan is needed for email and Internet service for the 69xx? Is it just MediaNet?

Ouch. I feel for you.

I had a Treo for a little while and quickly switched back to Windows Mobile. I just can't deal with Palm OS anymore. And I didn't like the severly cramped keys on the Treo. I need a little more space to type with my thumbs, hence one more reason why I choose the 6900 series. I get a static thumb keyboard with FLAT, well spaced keys without the need to deal with a thick slide out keyboard.

Man, I really don't know if I should dump this E62 and Get this phone....Ugh.

This is my first post I think in a while, But I just had to note I had the nokia e62 and sold it. I needed something faster and I needed camera. I just ordered this phone thru premier web and it was 359 with unlimited data connect. I should recieve it on thursday

Posted by: maevro

See, I dont have a premier account. If I did, I would be all over the phone and I would sell my e62 to my cousin in a second. The camera I dont need - the browser is amazing, but no java apps show up and that makes it worthless to me.

How can I get into the premier site?

Posted by: jimalaiyah

The battery cover problem has nothing to do with cracking or rattling...
When you remove the battery cover, the unit powers down. Or something to that effect.

Either via your work address if you company has that setup or via school if your university has a setup which UTA does, which is one of the few good things about this Universtiy....

Posted by: maevro

My work address did get accepted into the business but im registering my dads company and using his tax id to get the phone.

I think HP thought of it as a feature because the only reason you'd take off the back cover, normally, is to take out the battery or take out the SIM-- which requires removing the battery. They might be concerned about a shorting out of the battery when ripped out while the unit is still powered on, who knows but that "issue" (if you think it's an issue) isn't present with the 6900 series.

Posted by: WaterDawg

$599, no sales tax , and reasonable shipping charges. I ordered last Friday night about 8 pm PDT, and had phone next day (Saturday) before 2 pm. Total cost < $620.

(I've been using PC Connection for more than 15 years - VERY reputable IMHO).

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who succeeds in programming their Cingular-branded 6925 (or for that matter any 69x5 that they use on Cingular's net). By programming, I mean as in writing a C++/C# program, compiling with the Studio, and uploading to the phone. I know there are some certification issues with WM5.0, and I'm curious to know what the status of the restrictions for user-written code is. Thanks.

I'll be looking into that shortly, but there are alot of books out there for programming for mobile PC's. It may be tough to find one that talks about WM5, but they're out there.

I can program the rascal; I'm just curious what security certificate profile / requirements Cingular put on the devices. Previous branded WM phones have disallowed execution of unsigned code; I don't wanna spend almost as much as a new notebook to get a tiny little box I can't at least write some code for! Thanks; let me know if you find out anything... I was stoked about the 6925 and excited when it [finally ] came out, but I think I'll wait for the 8525.

I figure I needed a phone so why not try this out and see how I like it. That'll give me some time to get some user reviews on the 8525 before I make my decision (provided it comes out soon).

Posted by: txschafers

Is there anyone who has received this phone that could provide a review of their first impressions? I have never owned an iPaq and am sick and tired of waiting for the 8525 and 750 to drop.

My unit should arrive tomorrow. I will be beta testing WM as an addition to a very large Enterprise BES deployment with Blackberrys. While we are on the subject...Have any of you deployed this in a large existing BES environment? I am very happy with my BB 8700, so there is a high bar for a WM device during the evaluation.

Any thoughts on must have additional software in this environment? I'm looking for business centric additions only. Any clients that will duplicate the BB ability to alert the user to an email from a "VIP" sender?

OK....well I received my 6925 on Friday. This is my first pda/smartphone, and I'm not used to some nuances, so take my frustration with a grain of salt. I'm not at all happy with the phone, but I will say that I'm not at all used to it yet.

Likes
- Bright screen that is adjustable
- Fast menu response
- Beautiful appearance
- Easy to use QWERTY keyboard
- Lots of features and extras

Dislikes
- First and foremost, the wifi function is horrible. There are 4 networks within range of this thing, and obviously I want to use mine. Well...everytime it detects a network, it pops up a stupid freakin message to connect to the other networks because they were just found. It appears there's no way to make this use only a specified network. It's really really annoying.
- The camera is tooooo slow. When you click to take a picture it waits a second and a half before actually doing it.
- This thing sucks down battery faster than anything I've ever seen. (minor use of IE (non-WiFi), and a few short phone calls, and this thing was at 75% battery by 10AM....(it was at 100% at 7AM)
- Ringers and notifications are not too great
- I haven't found the keyguard yet...if it exists! Everytime I make a phone call, I go to end it, and my ear apparently opened a variety of programs and settings. So it's rather annoying.
- While in my pocket, the back battery cover is constantly falling off, becaus the button to remove the cover is too easy to press accidentally.

Give me a couple more days to play around with this thing, and I'll let you know if my first impressions have changed.

When you received the unbranded version, was there any "setup" you needed to do? e.g. MMS, GPRS/EDGE, etc?
-Was the setup easy?
-Was there an automated tool needed?

Thanks!

Just sold my 6515. Will receive my 6925 tommorow. This one should hold me over until the Treo 750 comes out. After that it will be dedicated to AGILE Messenger around the House and Tom Tom on the road! I hope Tom Tom 6 works a little bit better on this one. Of course I was trying to make my 6515 do things Tom Tom or HP hadnever had in mind. How many IPAQCHOICE points are bundled with the phone?

For the keyguard, go to Settings -> Buttons -> Lock and you will find 2 checkboxes of use.

The back cover thing is not normal. I have trouble removing mine on purpose, and I carry it in my pocket constantly without it ever coming off accidentally.

I am a little uncertain as to what you what exactly you want to know.

However, I received my 6925 last Friday. It comes with PocketStreets preloaded and a trial version of the HP Navigation System on CD. I loaded the HP Navigation system on the iPAQ and maps for California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona on my 2GB mini SD card. The navigation system works great even though I just have the iPAQ sitting in the cup holder of my center console. (I haven't bought a cradle for the car yet.) It works great and I was able to find most of my destinations by name without having to type in the address. I was planning on buying Tom Tom 6 when it came out, but am thinking of just buying the full version of the HP program now instead.

It quickly finds the satellites and the voice commands are very clear and accurate.

I love this thing. I glad I waited the eternity for it to be released.

Oh, 1 more thing. Do not forget to plug in the car adapter (not supplied) when using the GPS and do not forget it at home. I did and it went from a 75% charge to 30% in a matter of minutes.

Try this:

http://www.map24.com/

It requires a continuous internet connection, but appears to be free.

Posted by: MrGOLF

I think I'm just going to run iGuidance. I've heard it's great. Nothing in life is free right? By the way to all who are interested in the 6925, I think it's a great device, aside from the display and the battery life. The smartphone technology is lacking in screen display. I know there are other devices out there with a better dot pitch and better resolution than we're getting in these smartphones. I'm rather disappointed that we're not seeing 640x480 on these smartphones. Oh, the other thing I don't like is that it's not easy to make a phone call. Everything works a bit slow...from button clicks to dialing. The only thing that's going to get me to keep this phone is the GPS feature, which I still don't have working because I haven't yet purchased iGuidance. I'll keep y'all informed.

Posted by: iridium130

Eesh...if this had been available on Premier even a month ago, I would have gotten it. Now, with the release of the 8525 and 750 coming very soon, I'm torn

Posted by: FallN

Wirelessly posted (HP iPaq hw6945: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1))

I just don't get why some of you are having slow down issues with your 6925 phone reaction times yet my 6945 is snappy and resposive... Could it be the extra tweaks due to Cingular customization???

The back battery cover has NEVER accidentaly come off on either my 6945 or my 6515. Why your'e comes off is anybody's guess. What do you carry in your pocket with your phone? Are you positive to clicked the cover into place properly?

There is a built-in keylock that you can activate if you*d like. It's listed clearly in the manual, btw.

HP is one of the few PPC/PPC Phone makers that includes a removable flip cover to protect the screen and protect from mistaken screen presses while using the phone held to your ear. I highlt suggest you use it or simply don't hold the phone to your face to closely. Also use the included headset or a bt headset so you never have to hold a phone to your head again.

Posted by: Supacat

so far so good. I actually like the device better then the 8125. Getting TomTom to work with the GPS was a little bumpy, needed a registry edit to detect it. Smells like a Cingular customization to me Now it's working perfect on the GPS side of things.

Reception is great, phone works where others dont. I work in Midtown Manhattan and we just moved into a new building and this thing picks up a signal 3 levels underground. I should be steril by Friday

One beef is device is super picky when it comes to MiniSD manufacturer. I have a 2GB Adata and the device loses the SD card constantly. This was driving me crazy and I thought the device was faulty until I found posts on the Cingualr forum that state the same thing and people actually bought Sandisk or Kingston cards and the problem went away. I just bought a Kingston and will let you guys know once I get it.

***Million Dollar Question***
Does anyone know if you can flash these 6925s with a 6945 non Cingular branded rom? I have looked everywhere and where the 8125 had a large custom rom cummunity, I have found nothing on the HW6900 series, not even a certified 6945 rom off HPs site?

Posted by: maevro

I have always used Kingston cards and have never had any problems with them.

Posted by: txschafers

Can someone tell me if you can set time zones for appointments? I am not sure of this is a 6925 limitation or a WM5 one.

I have been using the same Adata that I had in my 6515 , no problems. Did you get your Tom Tom to remeber Persoanl settings?

The back cover hasn't fallen off in about a week. I guess it was just coincidence that it happened 3 times in the first two days. I didn't open the user's manual because I actually planned on returning it. I may keep it now. The screen cover that comes with it is extremely "gay", but I suppose it does serve a good purpose, I may try that soon too. It would be better if you could flip the protective screen all the way over so it was flush with the back of the phone. Then I wouldn't mind it so much.

How many more days until Cingular actually releases it to their consumer based site?

One of the Corporate stores told me yesterday that it wasn't going to be released on the consumer side. I figured he was blowing smoke. Guess we will have to wait and see, It is usually about 2 weeks to go from Premiere to consumer side.

,is there a lot more apps for the 6925 than there were for the 6515 when it first came out.i like to customize my home screen, can this be done on the 6925.thanks

I heard the exact same thing. I'm about to resign myself to getting the Treo 750, praying that a good Mini-SD Wi-Fi card comes out for it.

I've heard several different sources say that the 6925 will not be released to the standard consumer groups. That being said, I think they'll do it eventually. Why limit your sales market, especially if they have excess of the devices.

It's been on backorder from HP direct for over a week now and Cingular isn't showing any signs of life for the Consumer side. Auctions on ebay are ridiculous price wise. $699+$29 shipping?

I've lost faith in Cingular and HP.

I've given up. I'll just get a UMPC and call it year.

$599 open box or $599 still wrapped in the box? Hmm...

Hey, supply and demand.

Posted by: MrGOLF

You know...I had planned on trading this 6925 in to get an 8525 when it came out, but now, I think I'll keep this one. I would very much like the 3g, and even moreso I would like the larger screen, but the idea of a slideout keyboard is just unacceptable to me. Plus the built in GPS receiver is fantastic.

BTW, I'm using the same Kingston MiniSD card in my 6945 that I used in my 6515. Not a hiccup.

How has your battery life been? I barely get a full day with push email use only.

with the unit OC'ed to 502, i find the battery drain to be about 25% faster. i leave mine charged all day and when i'm in class, i use what i had for my H5550 which happens to charge and sync up with the hw6965 perfectly.

i end up with about 68% power playing MP3's on the way into class (about an hour commute) and a few phone calls and texts. i have yet to underclock this unit to see how much power it'll save but i'll do it next week sometime.

I have license for Pockethackmaster around somewhere. I think it's time for me to try it as well.

I figure, with both of those upgrades. It would be more of a PocketPC workstation than just a Communications device.

I also seen on a Singapore or Taiwanese forum that someone was able to get Crossbow beta installed on it.Not sure how far it went as far as development is concerned.

i agree.

currently i'm constantly watching what i can and cannot install on my ipaq. i just bought a 4 gig (yeah... 4) miniSD card so i can hold all the navigation maps and programs on there (well, most of them... some i would perfer to hold on the system). the biggest problem i have is when i do email, it takes up some room even if i ask for my attachements to be stored in the SD.

you going ot pull the trigger first or what?

Posted by: Remedy1

Well, whether or not the memory upgrade will be a benefit to the performance of the device left to be seen. A simple firmware upgrade could quite possibly introduce a spin on performance as seen in the past iPAQ series or other handheld products.

I would rather do it on a device that did NOT belong to my company. So, I'm searching for an unlocked device currently to test on.
