wait for the S60 Communicator...

wats the s60 communicator?

in theory to unify the "smart" phones they are going to move the communicator line to S60 v3 with the rest of the N/E series. This makes it a lot easier on software development, firmware development, and cuts costs down for Nokia.

There are not definate plans for this yet, so in the interim you could pick up another 9500, or p990 (I have heard very little good about this device), or one of the many Windows mobile devices (they suck but they have a faster proccessor and run a bit better ).

I kind of miss my 9500. It was the last phone I got really excited about. The new nokias are "ok" but that just solved all my problems (keyboard, cam, phone first, wifi, edge, expandable memory, smartphone OS).... man... I think I might get one again ...

I was thinking abot getting it again.. but i dont know anymore!! seems like a lot of money for me right now.. maybe once i go back to my homeland i might get it from there.

Because when you use it anyone looking wants to know what it is. Plus I was able to easily travel overseas and not miss my laptop for a minute.

All that and Business men want to be you and women want to be with you. It's just that great of a phone.

dont start an arguement over this please i really dont want to hear it as far as im concerned my 8125 is twice as fast at my E61 ever was

to provide a little background.. I HATE WINDOWS MOBILE!!!!... enough said... I am not a winmo fanboy in here to start arguments. I loved my 9500 more than any windows phone I have ever owned.

That being said. the 9500 is almost two years old (from specs/creation to first retail) it's impossible to think the latest rounds of windows mobile devices (with a newer OS) are not faster than the 9500. Multitasking / web surfing is a lot quicker on these devices.

Now, when/if Nokia moves the communicator over to S60 and gives it a better processor we can then say "ok now the communicator has caught up/gone beyond" the HTC devices, but I am not that much of a 9500 fanboy to even think that is possible now.

..now THAT being said I am seriously debating giving up my MDA for the 9500 because I loved the keyboard and OS on the 9500 a lot better than Windows Mobile. It is a lot of money still for old tech.

The 9500 is really a classy device. It is still a superb phone/mini computer. I have spent many hours on many airplanes working on it. I have gotten all sorts of work done that I never would have done if I had my laptop. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the top 5 or 10 phones ever created. Now it's a senior citizen but in it's hayday it was totaly revolutionary.

I am being lazy, so feel free to yell at me, but how much does the firmware upgrade improve the functionality of the phone. I see there is a new firmware (Iunlock.com) and with all this talk about the phone, I might give it another go if the performance is increased.

Posted by: Levent

and when do you think the successor of 9500 will come out with newer/better specifications? I'm kind of indecesive of buying 9500. If the newer version will come out anytime soon i better hold myself

Posted by: manchuia

if the long time between the 9210 and the 9500/9300 is any indication then a successor will not be coming for at least another year if not longer (The e61 kind of fills in the qwerty/business niche right now).

Posted by: brown2pac

what is the difference between these two devices, if i am not mistaken the 9500 only has a camera and is bigger, but is there anything more because i am thinking of getting one of these two models -9500 or 9300i, which is better and why?

Posted by: onlySE

the 9500 has been discontinued and has been replaced by the 9300i as i have heard, so basically they made the phone smaller with the same features but personally i stil like the brick feeling of th 9500

I have yet to see anyone with a Windows Mobile phone use it for longer than 10-15 minutes. Typically, the person will pick it up, poke around it a little with a stylus, then put it back in the pocket/bag. In contrast, I find it easy to use my phone for as long as 1 hour, alternating between typing-intensive activities and passive activities like web browsing. I don't get bored and my fingers do not get tired of thumb-typing either.

What would be cool: to have a phone of the same form factor that would be x86-compatible, and would run ANY version of Windows and some kind of Linux. The Communicators have 150 or 175 MHz processors; Windows 98 could easily run on a Pentium with this frequency. The point would be that, because of binary compatibility (same x86 architecture), we would be able to run so many more programs. I could do many more things with a Pentium-166 desktop than I can do with this phone. Too bad, no one has made such a device yet, and it doesn't seem likely to happen.

ok i just had my 9500 today and think it's a mini-computer.I got connected to internet by wireless very fast. This machine is fast but sometimes waits up for 2-3 seconds while switching between the menu items. The battery fully got charged very fast (like an hour) and i used the phone for 3 hours straight (most of the functions) and not even a bar dropped down from the battery.Yes, it's a bit bulky on hand but it is not a phone, just a mini-comp.I like it and give 9/10 for now.I may let you know later about the rest if anyone curious.Greetings.

Hello again!

It's been four days since i bought my 9500 and let me share my observations about it.

Internet connection: I don't know how but it's internet connection is faster than my laptop I tried a couple of times while connected to my adsl, 9500 downloading and sometimes opening the pages were faster

Battery consumption: The battery really amazed me.It's got li-1300.Call me crazy but i spent almost 15 hours on messing with the phone including taking pictures, listening songs, playing games and trying out some other things, around 10 hours wi-fi on,stayed connected to internet connections at a mall and at my apartment (at least 6 hours straight) afterwards, installing programs and games and uninstalling them.It consumed only two battery power bars out of seven all day long.

Documents: It's opening of acrobat and word documents may not be as fast as pocket pcs.It took 5-10 seconds to open 250-500kb pdf documents.Excel is organized beautifully and easy use,but again if the .xls file is around 500kb-1MB then it takes 30sec-2min. The thing i liked about the excel in 9500 is all the formulas have been included and easy to access each (even pocket pcs don't include all formulas -for exp: HP ipaq and for exp:lookup function). Same conditions for powerpoint. All type of files can be viewed full screen and this makes reading much easier and enjoyable.

Games&Applications: It's been really difficult to find free games for symbian 80 series. I found some from my-symbian and all about symbian but most of them are shareware.Installed doom for 9210 (which also works for 9300) didnt fully functioned on my 9500 (no sound, half the screen,etc.). Pretty much same for the applications. There are tons of games and apps. for series 60 but not 80 i guess. If anyone who has games and/or applications to share with me i'd really appreciate it.

Reception, display, wi-fi speed are the first things i noticed that are very good. It is also nice to take notes on desktop like post-it.

Sound is loud enough but i've been using e398 for two years and 9500 sounds weak (like most of the other phones in the market) after e398 normally. No vibration and i don't think you'd want one for this big phone The cam. is vga and this is not the reason i bought my communicator. It really depends on your priorities when buying a phone. Otherwise, i'd possibly buy a pocket pc and n73 or n93 as a phone but both would cost me more than 1 grand while i paid my 9500 250 bucks only (it's brand new, original and has two years warranty). I love e398 and 9500, both are unique.

I'm sure it is brand new and i paid us$.I bought it from a store that they were trying to finish their symbian 80 series and this wast last one. I was darn lucky i could say It's been 5 days i bought it and already dropped it twice (once the x-press cover and numpad fell apart), installed&uninstalled so many things and can't access to my documents folder directly but everything else I also need the newer firmwares cuz this 9500 came with OS 4.5 and i read that firmware 6.27's been out already. To mention, this device makes an addiction.

Posted by: manchuia

yeah .. the device is a brute.. and I miss it.. I lusted after it when it was announced and paid $600 to get it new (way back when). The 9300i isn't a successor to the 9500 as it still lacks a cam. The cam may be VGA but it was still great to just snap off a few pics when the main cam wasn't around.

Levent, if you get the software upgrade, please write a before/after review. I would defiantly appreciate it

Posted by: Levent

OK sure.I will take the phone to its service if i can't find the firmware online, but definetely need it cuz i messed with some of the files and can't get into the "my documents" folder.Besides i can't add mp3s as ringtones and the alarm stopped working.
