New Gmail Java App

I installed this new app for direct access to gmail on my Nokia 6630 and it works really good. I then tried to install it on my palm and found that I had to get the IBM VM. Once I did I was able to run it and it works well.

Point the palm browser to www.gmail.com/app.

I heard this is causing alot of crashes on 650/700p.

I haven't been using it a lot on my 650 but I did go through all the functions and it didn't crash on me. I'm using it on my other phone more since it actually looks better. The app is not optimized for the larger resolution on the Treo.

I downloaded it to my memory card. How do I install it?

You need to have the IBM Java VM installed. Once you have that you download the .jad file again and Blazer should ask you if you want to open it with that instead of telling you it's an unrecognized file. I had to reboot my Treo in order for that to happen after installing the VM.

beware if using on 700p this will create more lag.

I tried it and deleted it after 5 minutes. If they actually make a version *for* the Treo, maybe I'll give it another shot.

I agree... it's OK for Java... but a prc file would be best.

I think google will do the right thing and produce a prc much like Google Maps

Hey guys, I've been getting owned by school and work and haven't had a chance to try this out for myself.

I'm really curious though to know if it has spell check. Anyone know?

No spell check

It's not the greatest.

It prompts you if you want to use data minutes every time you use it, kind of annoying.

I just keep my blazer browser at m.gmail.com

It's not perfect, but I'd say it's a lot easier and more user friendly then the app.

I will continue to hold my breath for the prc.

It does not cause more lag on the 700P, as it is not capable of being run on its own. As for crashes, none at all on my 700p. As for prompting you about using data, install j9secpol.prc and that should be that.

That isn't because of the Gmail app; that problem is inherent in all J2ME apps on the Palm. However, you can download a patched file that will remove that nag from all J2ME apps over at treocentral.com

Unzip the attached file to the device's main memory and that should take care of the prompt. Ben

Thanks for posting this; I hadn't the time to do it myself
