iDEN to GSM mod

Forgive my ignorance, I just started developing for mobile devices but I would like to know if anyone has successfully modified an iDEN handset to operate on GSM. I have heard that it is possible by switching radio modules but it seems that this would be rather complicated.

I want to have some of the chipsets available on Motorola iDEN (namely the stand-alone GPS stack) but I need it to work on GSM for when I travel. Any ideas?

Also, does anyone know exactly which models have stand-alone GPS (not A-GPS or other network-assisted location services)? I checked the documentation and phonescoop, but am still not totally clear. I'm trying to identify the perfect handset for my application.

Thanks.

Isn't iDEN a CDMA technology?

No. iDen is its own technology. Here in the U.S, Nextel, it is owned by a CDMA Carrier, Sprint. Unless of course you have SoutherLinc...

Good to know. So basically an iDEN phone can only work on an iDEN network? Or is it interchangeable with CDMA?

iDEN ... is for iDEN towers.

The commands are probably totally different from CDMA, GSM, TDMA, MONKEYDMA whatever.

It's not going to happen.

iDEN phone works on iDEN network (towers) just as much as a TDMA phone works on TDMA towers, and a GSM phone works on GSM Towers.

I know it wont happen, but the gsm carriers should start using iden/gsm phones and offer ptt (much like sprint getting the ic series phones which are iden/cdma) and they are not the same, iden is iden. I have searched for countless hours and examined every bit of the gsm programming, and it is not a software thing , it is a hardware issue. as far as the towers t-mo and att use 1900 bandwidth, much like my i855 uses 1900 bandwidth. and the ptt on an iden phone uses satalites which is why sometimes u can use ptt and not phone and vice versa

i dont like cdma but MDMA isnt bad

Iden uses a satellite? To the best of my knowledge Iden is the same as all other cell phone service in that it depends on towers for transmission. Maybe communication between tower sites is handled via satellite but satalites are not directly communicating to your phone. Phones that communicate to satalites are available but they're expensive and the cost of service is outrageous
