P990i: Truly a useless *Phone*

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If you want a gadget PDA then look no further. if you would like to receive calls and get messages when they are actually sent to you, then im afraid this phone isnt for you

Just to make sure that i have some text messages to receive, every few hours i restart the phone, then low and behold i have some messages arriving as soon as the phone starts up again. god only knows how many calls i missed

Sony Ericsson are going to fall fast and hard if this is the quality of phones they are bringing to the market nowadays. their mid range phones work as phones and then fall apart. i have 2 other friends using SE phones, one is a k750i where the joystick doesnt work properly (has no down function anymore) and the other is something on to it with basically the same problem, only when you press down it selects something.

Just to mark how useless a phone this is i will check it every two hours to see if it can receive calls (home phone) and texts (vodafone free webtext) after its been on a whole 2 hours, after all, its not too much to ask for your phone to be able to receive calls and text messages now is it

I would highly doubt this is just a 2 day thing, after owning a P910i im really dissapointed in this device, i dont even think i can bring myself to call it a phone. i just hope i can get my money back

oh brilliant, and now its restarted twice in the past 2 hours for no reason, i just have it lying on my desk and ive been here to witness it restarting for no reason

Slade_X,

Really, it reboots spontaneously? Tell us all something we don't know. You could have looked here to find that out.

It's not a bad phone, it was just released too early. It still kicks butt over my p910a, warts and all.

My p990's build quality is excellent - delicate too as are all electronics, especially as they pack all that stuff in. The T637 I have from 3 years ago is still going strong after being repeatedly dropped, thrown by my kids, and otherwise severely abused. Would I expect a high quality camera phone to have the same ruggedness? Probably not. How do we know you and your friends don't play football with it or the other phones you mention? I'm kidding, of course, but people's handling can vary quite a bit.

It'll come along, just be patient.

Do I have low standards? No, in fact, I think most p990 owners have extremely high standards - that's the only reason we'd spend a lot of money on a phone that's not quite up to snuff yet. We also accept that these are extremely complex devices and even though SE released the phone too early, there will be firmware releases to clean things up. Especially now that they're coming out subsidized on carriers which will increase the number of handsets out there.

Look around - there are clues/hints to get you by until more firmware releases come out.

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonP990i/R100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Symbian OS; 306) Opera 8.60 [en])

mine reboots itself quite often when it runs out of ram. it does get pretty annoying.

texts, calls, mms, push email all arrive within seconds on my P990. not had a problem yet.

upload swiss manager to close all apps when u close the flip.it works great and never have the out of memory issue.im a power user and my phone is what helps me make a living and hasnt failed me once.

Wow this is the first time I've heard of such a problem...maybe this is why they won't release a N.America version?

I hope something is in the works as far as another 850MHz enabled UIQ device...maybe they're just waiting for 3G.

Same problems here. Had to take the battery out twice now in 2 days to reboot cause it crashed for no reason. Than once I rebooted, I got text messages that were sent hours ago. Until they fix the problems it's going back in the drawers. I'll be using my Nokia and Tytn for now.

I haven't been using the P990i as long as most people 'round here -- just got it last week.

Thus far I've had nothing but praise for this device. I updated the firmware w/o issue and all works quite well. In fact, this phone gets better reception in my area (west of Minneapolis, MN) than any phone I've ever owned -- all the Pxxx series phones included.

I hope the OP and everyone else having problems gets them sorted out.

I do have it installed, but the thing is - sometimes I use both the interne browser on the phone and Opera together, all while I'm trying to listen to music. Then boom, it shuts itself. Last time it turned off on me when I was looking for a contact while on speakerphone. I think the firmware itself is a bit unstable.

Have you upgraded the firmware?

@PreFknLude_SiR

Until the firmware can sort out the memory management issue, I don't think you should attempt to multitask with the phone. On the very rare occasion, the phone's crapped out on me, but for the most part, it's been fine. Are you running Swiss Manager Pro? Or the test version?

Is there a new firmware out?? I wasn't aware. I tried to update yesterday and it told me that I have the latest.

If you have R7 then it's the lastest. New firmware week 48 (rumor)

and this is the type of thing that keeps me at bay. At $600 I can't do what I can do with a 200 Sony w300i... browse and play music at the same time.

I know the m600 was a different beast after it's firmware, as were the Nokia N/E series, so it should be good after the tweaking. Hopefully by the time SE gets it together this will be a $500 phone.

@manchuia

I'm with you on that. Rumourmill's talking about all the fascinating stuff the new firmware's going to add to the P990. I really don't care. So long as they fix the memory management problem. Everything I can live with! =)~

but running two browsers, music and then trying to open the messaging i would expect the phone to crash/reboot.
i'm able to listen to music and use the built in browser, just make sure if you want to do anything else you close the web browser.

And exactly when was the original manufacture date, 48 weeks is an entire year to wait for a phone you bought to work properly

No week 48 as in 3 weeks

Posted by: slade_x

After updating to the newer firmware does anyone know how to reflash back to the original as master reset doesnt do it. this is getting ridiculous, after a fresh restart and leaving the phone unused it still randomly restarts, only now when it restarts it displays a message saying it restarted to improve performance

There are a lot more problems with the newer firmware than the original Well done SE

@slade_x

you install swiss manager yet?

its was the first thing i installed when i got the phone.

i woke up this morning to find my phone dead in the cradle. it wouldnt power back up again until i removed and reinserted the battery.

I know, no phone is without its problems but this one is a bit excessive. it really should not have been released. luckily for SE customers they all seem very forgiving. for me, i bought a new phone and i am still using my P910i as a phone

um.. I was able to do this and more not only with S60 (an OOOOOLD 6260)and SE.

For example on the 6260 I would have:
Opera mini
Java Game
music player
messaging
and Papyrus running, with no problem.

on the "dumb" k750i I would have:
opera mini
music player
at least 2 java apps
and I would go through messages or calendar.

The k750i would run slower than the 6260 but still be fine. Both of these phones are under the $300 mark and have about 1/4 of the features, but both worked OUT OF THE BOX this way.

I am all for firmware upgrades, and I know it takes sometime to get it right, but I am not going to act like this phone has a "few" problems when it doesn't operate right as a PDA and seems to be lacking as a phone as well.

@slade_x

Someone else might have a better idea, but I suggest you take it back where you got it from and exchange it for another one, because I'm on about 3 or 4 different P990 forums and I've YET to hear of something as dire as this.

You've upgraded correctly to the new firmware?
You've flashed the phone?
Done a master reset?
Installed swiss manager?

The only other thing I would suggest is try changing a battery. They were afterall Sony batteries that were recalled by Toshiba.....*shrug*. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

k750 can only run one java app on the background...nice story you got there..

Master reset doesn´t solve any problems - people with problems, even after latest firmware, should format internal drive via service menu

I have have r3b01 firmware since September, and my phone doesn´t restart itself...it only does it when i take it to the limits, specially when opera is running...it can multitask, but not too much, and not with some heavy apps (Tom Tom, Opera)

Swiss Manager Pro is a must, and also some discipline using it

I do all i want with my P990: gps with Tom Tom, web browsing via wifi, music via bluetooth stereo, games, Outlook sync, it always get SMSs, calls, etc

Of course, i demand better memory management, no memory leakage, and some other minor bugs to be corrected, but SE history proves these will be worked out with next firmwares

Posted by: artesea

Ares, what GPS receiver do you use my cheap one doesn't get on with the P990 and I'm looking for advice.

Posted by: Ares

I´m using a Holux receiver bought at http://www.nav4all.com
