Dash Email - Deletes from server if I delete from Dash???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well I searched through the forums and couldn't find this answer anywhere so here's my issue:

I setup my POP3 email on the Dash and everything works okay but if I delete the message on my Dash it also deletes it from my mail server. I used a Treo 650 for 2 years and used Snapper and as long as I had the "leave mail on server" option checked I would always have my email waiting for when I got to my office computer and checked with Outlook even if I deleted the message from Snapper on the Treo. Anyone know of a solution? Also it sucks not being able to "Send Immediately" option for outgoing mail, you have to manually do a Send/Receive to get the message to actually send.

BTW I'm currently working around this by using mail2web but I'd rather not have to if at all possible.
Thanks for any insight!!

ChatterMail, also, had a "Delete only on Treo" option I was fond of as well.

Just get used to it. Consider your POP3 "view" of your server email account's INBOX as being the same on both your server and your SmartPhone POP3 Client. Delete on the phone, it'll be deleted on the server. And visa versa.

Now, what I really miss from SnapperMail & ChatterMail is "AutoBCC" to my self. Of course, this meant I'd see the message I sent received in my INBOX. But that would give me a chance, the next time I log into my mail server, to manually move that copy from my INBOX to my SentMail folder (which normally happens automatically when I send email from the server directly).

BTW, it took me a while to realize how to even type in a BCC (or CC). When you compose a New Message, seemingly only the To:, Subject:, and Body: fields are available to edit - bot notice that you can scroll UP to "above" the To: field - first to the CC: field then on to the BCC: field.

With xt9 enabled, it's not so bad. I just scroll up to BCC and start typing my own email address. xt9 quickly gives me the option to auto-complete it and not have to type the full BCC: address (to myself) in.

Wow, I actually want this feature - delete from the server so I don't have to delete junk mails again and again. Anyway, why not use web2mail? It's free and it realizes your Dash's push feature.

That's exactly what I did, works out great, I paid the extra $1.99 so I can use my real email address when I reply instead of the mail2web address. And for the year it was cheaper than what I paid for Chattermail to get "Push" mail on my Treo 650!

Wait. I'm not sure I understand. Do you have your email forwarded to web2mail which goes to your phone and then have the ability to reply using your web2mail account but it will put in your real email address??

I'll explain my situation since it is probably close to his:

I have a gmail account xxxxxx@gmail.com

I then opened an account with the mail2web service (www.live.mail2web.com), which gave me a new email address of xxxxxx@mail2web.com

Then I set up the mail2web exchange settings on my Dash, which gives you the ability to sync email, contacts, tasks, and calendar.

From there I went to gmail and forwarded all of my email to the xxxxxxx@mail2web.com address.

Now at that point you can stop and all of your email will come to your Dash/Smartphone and all of your data that you have choosen will sync to the mail2web account. However if you choose to reply to emails either from the server or your smartphone your reply to address will be xxxxxxx@mail2web.com. That is because the free version of the service does not allow you to change/spoof the reply to address.

For $1.99 per month you can set up a Personal Exchange account which will allow you to have your own reply to address (in my case xxxxxxx@gmail.com) which can be used from the server as well as your device. It also removes the ads on the program and gives it a much cleaner, realistic Outlook look.

Now again with either option you can still receive email and sync data, but the paid version allows you to make server side changes to suit it to your needs.

More information, including a full how to set up can be found HERE!

Hope that helps

EDIT: I should also add, that all of your email is still saved on the Gmail server and can be placed into a folder or deleted once forwarded, so for those that worry about loosing emails upon deletion, this method will keep you from worrying Again this will work with the free or paid option, just make sure your settings are also correct in Gmail.

I know it is an extra step and probably a hassel in some cases but until Gmail actually "works" this is the best free option to get real time email.

One point about GMAIL. Gmail is ACTUALLY the only true pop3 client I think. At the server level, when one enables pop3 access, there is a setting that is “leave a copy on the server when downloading via pop3”

Which means, this issue of having it downloaded to the DASH, and then deleting it and have the SYNC log show a delete is not relevant. My gmail works GREAT this way, I download to the DASH, and delete, move etc on the DASH, and then I can STILL download to a PC client, or view the information online at GMAIL.com

The MAIL2WEB solution seems nice though, essentially PUSH email to the device, for 2.00$ a month. THAT cannot be beat.

My only question is, if I have a pc client that I typically download all my emails to, will they STILL be on the say, earthlink server for download

I have the mail2web setup and it is working, now doing forwarding YET, but most likely will.

how does the directpush work, to the phone? how does the server KNOW how to reach the phone without the phone information? I don't know where that information gets setup? Does it get setup on mail2web somewhere?

I thought the point was that a direct ping hit the phone as a message, alerting the phone to download, and then it was essentially realtime.

Did you click the link I posted to the full tutorial? All of the set up instructions are located within it.

Yes, I clicked the link, but the section to input phone numbers is not found on my device. I wonder if the DASH just doesn't have it.

What phone number part? You do not need the Push email part at the bottom of the tutorial if that is what you mean. Your phone number is not part of the mail2web set up.

Posted by: nikepaq

but the, how to reach the phone with the sms trigger, should be part of some setup, no? It is listed in the instructions at the bottom of the PUSH setup section. Basically, it is phonenumber@privodor name.com

Thanks for the great tips! I have it all set up...but cannot figure out how to change my mail2web reply address to my yahoo account. Is it the "change display name?" Thanks again for all of your help!

No that is not part of the set up and is not needed with an Exchange account. The set up is the server address, user id and password and that is about it.

You can not change your reply to address on the free mail2web account. You must subscribe to a personal exchange account which is $1.99/month. It also removes the ads on the program as well.

Do mail2web, or other push services, do Spam filtering?

jerry

Most if not all of them do. Mail2web does and has an adjustable spam filter setting.

Thanks.

A couple of other question from Mail2Web customers. I have an email account (and domain) on an ISP that I want to have pushed to my smartphone. But I also want to retrieve the email from Outlook on my PC when I get back to my home. Can I do this?

Second, if I reply to one of these pushed emails from my Smartphone will it have my domain as the address. That is, I want to make sure the address reads me@mydomain.com, not me@mail2web.com

Thanks,

jerry

I've got a $1.99/month mail2web account that I'm trying to use with Yahoo mail. Do I need to forward my yahoo mail to my mail2web account to get my email directly to my phone in "real-time" or is there another option? I would rather use POP3 so I can access the email either on my phone or at the yahoo site. The mail2web email aggregator says it only collects POP3 once per hour. Am I missing something?

1. Not sure

2. Yes you can have that but you will have to pay $1.99/month for a Personal exchange account with Mail2web.

You will have to foward your yahoo email to your mail2web account in order to get "real time" email. Like you said pop 3 does not collect fast enough for most people.

This is what I have been doing. I forward all of my Yahoo mail to mail2web so I get it in realtime on my Dash. I switched from a blackberry and didn't realize that I wouldn't get my email in realtime. I am still working out the kinks. Yahoo is my primary email client and prefer that all of my email stay on yahoo.com. By forwarding the mail, it is no longer on yahoo.com and so I don't have all of my email centralized. What I have been doing is once a week halting the forwarding from Yahoo, forwarding all of the mail out of mail2web to yahoo then filing it in my folders-then restarting the forwarding. It is a colallasal pain the rear- but until Yahoo allows users to keep a copy of the mail on the server, this is how it has to be.

btw- you can go to your user control panel with the 1.99 /mo service and allow outgoing mail to read me@mydomain.com instead of me@mail2web.com.
