MediaMax+8525 or PDA...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

How many of you are going to keep a mediamax plan and use the new 8525 when it gets released, versus how many of you have PDA connect, and how many will upgrade to the PDA plan?
I currently have a 3G phone and am wanting to buy the 8525, but am unsure how long they'll go with letting that work on the mediamax 200 bundle (without tethering, no need).
Everyone's thoughts?
(I know there are discussions regarding this, but none talking about it with regard to the new 3G PDA)

i just had mediamax added to my account (had medianet unlimited before) and saved $5/month. I'm probably getting a CU500 as well besides my 8525/Treo 750 in case anyone at cingular asks

gonna keep the media plan when treo comes out. no need to get pda plan. just spending more money for vary minor differences.

I am wondering the same thing. I know with the 8125 it was still using Edge which all the other phones use. Now that the 8525 will have 3G do you think they will notice that you are using Mediamax because of how fast your connection is and how much data you are using? I plan to use mediamax when I get the 8525 since I already have it on my current phone.

what are those minor differences between mediamax and pda plan besides the cost?

The differences are not so minor. You'll see a major improvement in performance and battery life by using PDAConnect and the ISP.CINGULAR APN if you're planning on using Exchange ActiveSync and DirectPush...

If you're not using DirectPush, you may not see a difference.

Furthermore, the facts that there are no bundled SMS and no access to CingularVideo are both annoying.

It's up to you whether or not you think it's worth the extra 10-20 bucks a month.

I definitely do...

how does using ISP have any affect on battery life? I've used MS Push on wap.cingular.com on my 8125.

On my 8125 I use MediaNet and DirectPush have enjoyed the connectivity very much. I can’t imagine how going to PDA Connect would increase my battery life though. But I can't personally justify the $45.00 a month for unlimited data of the PDA Connect. My average usage is about 28 MB a month over the last 10 months. I would love if Cingular would compromise on this a create a different plan like the “Black Berry Personal” which has unlimited for $35.00 which seems more reasonable for tech savvy private, read non business, users.

There has been testing done by the hacks over at XDA Developers. The problem with MediaNet and WAP.CINGULAR is the fact that you have a constantly changing ip address. More often then not, your ip address will change during the "polling" interval, which will lead to timeout issues, leading to still more polling, and thus reduced battery life -- and delayed delivery of email messages.

As PDAConnect allows the use of ISP.CINGULAR, which maintains a constant ip address, this issue disappears. I can tell you personally that I've seen the difference.

Finally, PDAConnect costs $39.99 as an addon to a phone plan.

I agree with you that there should be some Consumer/PDA-friendly data plans that throw in Video and SMS!

Does anyone remember the specifics of the OLD (read: almost 2yrs old) MediaWorks plan that was going for $19.99? That's the plan I have on my account. I believe it came with 1000 SMS and 250 MMS or something? Someone want to clear up what benefits I'd have from going from MediaWorks to MediaMax or PDA Connect? I'm not sure there is any advantage for me. Thank you.

if you have unlimited data with old plan, then there is no advantage to switching to new mediaworks/max plan. And some will argue, but no need to use pda connect plan.

Cingular data plans are based on the "predicted amount" of data to be used on the device. The 8525 is a 3G handset, so Cingular believes data will be used like crazy if you purchase the device. There are minimal differences between using an old MEdia Works or a MEdia Max versus the PDA Connect, except some page layouts (WAP versus full desktop) and the addition of the isp.cingular APN for push e-mail.

There was an official announcement from Cingular some time ago stating that the only MEdia Works with unlimited internet would no longer be supported on data devices. So, they company is looking to enforce that.

And, just a FYI, a Microsoft Rep at our 3G kick off party said they will be releasing a firmware update within a few months so the 8525 can support CV. woo hoo!

CV? I'd like to keep my old MediaWorks package.. guess I'm going to have to find someone who is willing to sell to me without changing my plan.

CV = Cingular Video

ok, i work for Cingular and see threads like this all the time. i have been an emplyee for almost 5 years and i have never heard of Cingular auditing peoples accounts for media packages and high usage. It may start happening tho because of the new 3G and alll but as of now have never heard of anyone being forced off their media net plan etc.. Infact i know of higher ups who have approved credit for 5k bills due to PDA on a pay per use option and the cusotmer added a media net unlimited and they didnt say nothing.. Until it starts being posted here alot that Cingular is auding people i think your safe. Now if an employee tried to do that we would probably get fired due to the fact that we were "working the system"..

i have an 8125 and i used to have Unlimited MediaNet for $19.99 and 200 Text Messages for $4.99 and a month ago i just switched to the MediaMax 200 Bundle which (Copied From Cingular) Includes 200 Messages (3 cents/additional messages): You have the freedom to message any way to any one - text, picture, video and IM - without worrying what each message costs. That means every message counts the same. You can send and receive ANY combination of messages. Want to send all picture messages? No problem. All IMs? Go ahead and chat away.

Includes UNLIMITED MEdia Net: With MEdia Net, you can browse the web, check your email, get your sports scores, movie times, weather and news right on your mobile phone. Plus, you can download the latest ringtones, games and graphics. Your information - the way you want it.

bascially, saves me 5 bucks a month and i'll be ready for 3G when i get the 8525....i don't use direct push when i want to check my mail i just connect and pull it up manually...for my needs i'm fine with that...i think the 3G service is more for my needs so i don't think i need the PDA connect plan plus Cingular hasn't pushed me to change it either...oh, and even though it says you need a 3G phone to have this bundle its because of all the cingular video and things like that but it will still work on a non-3G phone (ex. my 8125) i just won't be able to access all that until i get the 8525...

If it came with 1k text and 250mms and unlmited wix for 19.99 i would keep that puppy as loooong as possible.. Media max i think is only unl wix and 200 messages. PDA connect dont even include messaging so you have to purchase that seperatly.

Posted by: pcmike

Yes, I believe thats what it is. Is there anyway to tell exactly?

Posted by: stevOh

Old Media Works Package (2004)
1500 SMS
200 MMS
Unlimited Media.Net

Posted by: strikeIII

from what i stated above whatever media max bundle you chose for instance if you get the one that has 1000 messages thats both SMS and MMS they combined them together not separated anymore...

Posted by: sportsfreak2159

if ig et mediamax 200 instead of the pda connect for 39.99 and i use it for personal resaons not buisness will it be different. can i still use IE at 3g speeds? can i still get my pull email from my 8525? or would i have to do it through MEdia net. cuz the cingular rep told em Media max is for phones that dont run windows and its only for weather and scores and IE would nto work?
