Krzr Questions

How big is the hard drive on the Krzr? How many songs does it hold? Can I increase the number with a larger SD card?

Thanks for any help. I'm thinking about selling my iPod and getting a Krzr or Chocolate but just want to know what kind of capacity these 2 phones have.

Also, can I download songs to a Krzr with a USB cable or can I only use VCast?

KRZR doesn't have a hard drive. How many songs it will hold will pretty much depend on what size mem card you put in it.

Who is your carrier? I would assume verizon since you mention vcast? If it is verizon you'll have to use a usb cable and verizon's driver to transfer songs to the phone. Obviously verizon prefers you buy the songs through vcast.

If other than verizon, you should be able to use bluetooth, usb cable, card reader or whatever method you want to put songs on the phone.

Internal memory for the K1m is about 20 megs. Maximum size transflash (microSD) card is 2 gigs. Without the transflash, I was only able to load about 5 songs at 64K resolution, .wma's. I would highly recommend getting a memory card.

Yes, you can transfer music from a computer to the Krzr via USB cable. You connect the phone, enable the "synch music" in the phone menu and use Windows Media Player 10 or 11 to synch the music over. I tried dropping mp3's onto the transflash card using a card reader, but they wouldn't play--after some research on the Verizon site, I found that their copy protection prohibits this. But using WMP works just fine, albeit a bit slow--the 128k mp3's get transcoded to 64k .wma files before transferring.

Ooops. I'm wrong about this. Apparently, Verizon has recently allowed sideloading unprotected mp3's onto the Krzr & Chocolate phones:

"Q. How do I convert my MP3 files to be playable on my V CAST Music phone?
A. Using Music Essentials Manager or Windows Media Player 10 or higher and the appropriate USB cable and software drivers, you can sync your MP3 files to the V CAST Music phone. During the sync process, MP3 files will automatically be transcoded, if necessary, to the WMA format that you can play on your V CAST Music phone. The original MP3 files on your PC will remain in the MP3 format. If you have MP3 files on a phone memory card, simply save them to your PC and then convert them as above.

On V CAST Music phones with Version 01.02.000 or higher software such as the Chocolate by LG, you can "sideload" unprotected MP3 files to the MY_MUSIC folder of your memory card. (To format the memory card, turn on your phone, insert the card into the phone and then remove it. Save your music to the MY_MUSIC folder.) Note: only unprotected MP3 files can be played after being sideloaded. Protected MP3 files must be synced in order to be played on the phone."

Sorry for my confusion.

For the US Cellular KRZR, the internal memory is 32MB (flash shared), so the real memory is significantly less than that. Also, the USCC KRZR can only support up to a 1GB SD.

Yeah, the driver situation with the K1m is a disaster. Motorola should have provided a driver cd with the phone (don't get me started...grrrrrrrrr)

As far as the microSD card: make sure there are only four folders on it: "my_music", "my_flix", "my_pix" and "my_sounds". Make sure all the mp3's or WMA's (I'm assuming you're on Verizon--this is drastically different with each carrier) are "loose" in the "my_music" folder and not encased in any subfolders. Make sure the file names are 49 characters or less and contain only standard letters, numbers and spaces; no punctuation, underlines, international characters, stray periods or anything else.
