freeware problems

It sems as if my XV6700 won't recognize any software/freeware that i download from the internet or receive from friends. When I attempt to open a file to install, the Pocket PC keeps giving me the message that "______ is not valid Pocket PC application." Is this because Verizon locks the PDA from any non-Verizon sources? If so, is there any way to bypass this?

Thanks

the thing with pocket pc software is you have to make sure that it is compatible with the type of processor in the PPC. also have to make sure that the software also works with the PPC's OS, like if you downloaded some windows CE 3 software and try to put it on a WM5 it won't work, though sometime they do, but not all the way. I would see if that software is compatible with your current OS and processor.

also for verizon and the VX6700, they really don't lock down the device like they do with the regular phones, only thing they did with this phone is add some programs and some small customizations, which can all be removed.

That error message usually means that it's an "exe" file that has to be installed using ActiveSync on your computer. - sheureka

To echo sheureka, many pocket pc programs are installed from your desktop....that is, you activate an .exe file that triggers an install onto your device (via activesync). If it is a .cab file, however, you can move that program to your device and install it from there.

It normally wants you to conenct via active sync and run the install on the desktop. Personally I do not like to do that - if you run the exe (w/o the 6700 connected) the install will usually error out or you can just kill it at the end. Then look in \program files or \program files\microsoft activesync folders and the install folder will be there with the cab file (that's what you need) in it. Just send it to the phone (or copy onto a card) and install from the phone...
