AllAboutSymbian reports that there is a new firmware v. 6.27. Notable improvements are:

A big question is: where can one go to get it? The improvements sound interesting, but not earth-shattering. Does anyone know if Nokia stores in Chicago or NYC do fimware upgrades?

Posted by: manchuia

iunlock.com offers to do the firmware upgrade. I think it's hit or miss if any of the nokia stores/experiences will actually do a firmware upgrade for you.

So any updates on the reliability of the NEW firmware?

Posted by: manchuia

I went to iunlock's sit and read the testimonials and it seems like a good idea if you already have a 9500/9300i. I was thinking of picking up this phone, but I know it's successor will be announced in a week or so.

I had the 9300-b upgraded to 6.27 a few months ago. The browser improvement was my main motivation.(huge improvement) However, now I find I can`t seem to get nokia pc suite to recognize my phone. Since I use other phones also, I didn`t notice this for awhile. I lost bbc also and can`t get it back. I was wondering if anyone else with this newer f/w has had any such issues?

i just sent it in to iunlock a couple of days ago, and im just waitin for it to come back...=D

I am sorry I can't help on the bbc / pc suite issue.

Can you give us a bit more of an idea of the overall improvement though?

I sure would like to hear your experience with using pc suite when you get your phone back. Also bbc if your using it. As I stated I have not been able to do that. I`m beginning to wonder if this new f/w is some off brand(non nokia) or something. I can`t begin to check all the listed improvements that were posted in another thread, but I am just pleased with the improved browser functions.

I haven`t checked much in the above list as I don`t use all that stuff that much. I have noticed tho:1. Much improved browser function (big deal for me).My Main reason for doing upgrade.
2. Already had email notification icon when I was using bbc
3. Already had alert tone for new email before upgrade.
4. Telephone: I never had a problem answering phone call when in browsing mode. Never missed one. Came right over speaker. Hangup and right back to where my browser left off. This didn`t change anything.
5. Calendar highlighting is new I think, not sure.
Sorry I`m not more help, but there is no way I will ever check on all those listed improvements as they really don`t apply to my usage.

thanks for the information. Basically I am a little mad at the e90 pricing and was wondering if the 9500/9300 with upgrade was more usable compared to modern phones with the upgrade or if it really wasn't such a big deal.

I`m with you on the pricing issue. It is really getting ridiculous. If I were going to keep this as my main phone and hadn`t already done so, re: the upgrade ,I would definitly get it. Just beware of the bbc issue and the pc suite issue. Both these issues kind of suck. I have other phones I use so I`m not that pissed about it.
As much as I would love the e90, I may hold off (if I can) till t-mo releases 3g devices. It`s supposed to be this year sometime. I would hate to spend the big bucks for an e90 and have t-mo`s 3g not work on it.
Would maybe sell my 9300 for about $200 free and clear for me. Any takers?
(i have tooo many devices)

Just installed 4smartphone email service on my 9300. Got it up and running and works great.Needs roadsync for the exchange to work. This works as good if not better than bbc, and since that was lost I needed something. I'm in the free trial period, I really like the mini-laptop form factor of this device. The build quality is one of the best IMO. Think I'll be keeping it awhile longer When the e mail trial runs out I'll have to decide to pay the $$ or not.

yeah .. the reviews on the new e90 are a bit misleading. I loved the keyboard on the 9500 / 9300 to death (over anything HTC has made, and even over the e61/62), and despite the lack of backlighting I think is pretty much perfect.

I am in the debating phase right now if I can really do $1K for a phone... a PHONE!!!... part of me is also dissapointed in the S60 implementation on the phone. I understand that it gives the platform more software, easier to work on, etc. etc., but the screen shots just don't make great use of the real estate, and I figure, if I can find old S80 apps that do the trick, I an just downgrade and still be good to go.

I also love the form factor and keyboard. I've been doing some app installs just to keep it interesting. I ordered a mmc card off ebay as i couldn't find one anywhere locally. The $ they want for the e90 is way too much if it won't work on tmo 3g.

That part is currently up for debate... Yeah if it turns out that Tmo is launching its 3G with a US variant of the e90, then I will buy it. I doubt it as Tmobile knows its best position is the "lower" cost alternative to Cingular and as such doesn't offer a ton of high end phones (8801 being an exception). This could be one of those deals like the N91 where it's not sold through tmobile but a third party but exclusively for tmobile.

I digress.

Has anyone done the firmware upgrade for the 9500? Tempted to get one of those and do the upgrade and then just get a smaller SE camera phone (or maybe an 8801?!?) as the everyday phone.

So before I do this upgrade which I plan on doing because I too can not see my self spending $1000.00 on a phone. This upgrade defiantly will cause the phone not to synch with my comp ??? That is an huge deal for me if so. Yea I do have several other phones however I like the sync feature and use to insure all my data is on each. Has anyone here gotten there sync to work on this unit with an update??? I truly think nokia needs to make a ported s60 for this device all together. It should be fully cable judging the processor speed and etc. (not much different from other s60's of course excluding the high end ones). I think everyone here will be guaranteed to buy the E90 for the features however without that ridiculous introductory price. If anyone is with me do you think it can be ported to an S60 device?

I could not get my 9300 with new firmware to be recognized by pc suite. As I stated before if anyone can get this to work please post how. I am not an expert, Perhaps there is a work around. BBC also does not work. The only version I could find (bbc)was for f/w 5...? something. New firmware is 6.27. Old f/w on my 9300 was 6.03 I think, how come bbc worked on it? So many questions and not enough answers. I`m pretty sure I`m missing something. I don`t care much about getting bbc to work anyway, but I would like to be able to sync my 9300 to my pc. Depending how important this is to you , you might want to wait on the update untill someone offers the solution. Trouble is there are not enough 9300 users out there, so it might be a long wait. I`d do it again tho in a new york minute just for the improved browser function..I wouldn`t hold my breath waiting for nokia to come up with a solution , they`re too busy getting the E90 out there.......... My .02

Do you think it is possible to port an 9300 to s60? or even have an emulator which would emulate the s60 series enabling us to to run s60 programs?? I too want the new E90 but for the price I can wait until than I wanna be able to use the phone for all wut it can do during the hold up period. I wanna do the update badly however if you can't sync the phone anymore whats the point. I wanna be able to sync my calendar, contacts, and etc..... not to mention installing software which is a must!!!!!!!!! I know we lack 9300 users however there has to be work around for this somewhere. The programs being installed can be solved simply buy transfering via mmc card but is a pain (imo). I will continue to look for the answers however will need help from the rest.....

I have never heard of doing such a thing as your talking about. s60 -> s80. It certainly would open a whole new world of possibilities. So far I have downloaded all my apps directly to my phone with no trouble. I`m not that app happy ....yet. I have a few good ones. Power desk , I really like. I would like to find a memmaid type cleaner for s80 but I think that one is windows mobile specific.
As far as the price for the E90, It is what it is. We takes it or we leaves it. It wasn`t long ago that the 8801 came out for $650. I can`t believe I paid that for it, especially for what ya got. People said the iphone will not sell because it costs $499. That`s nothing. If it`s worth it to someone, then they will find a way. I would def buy the E90 for use on t-mo 3g. If that won`t work then I will wait to see their 3g offerings. But a grand for a s60 communicator is a bit much I think with no 3g access. Just have to wait and see. I switch between my E70-2 , wm5 TyTN and my 9300-b. I have a hard time choosing because I love using all of them. Still would like to hear from other 9300 users tho , about their upgrade, bbc, and pc suite experiences with their phone post upgrade....carry on..............

Posted by: aktopshooter

Hey quick question for you cbr did you loose your info on your unit inorder for them to install the new firmware? Or was everything left normal just with your experiencing all the new features....

Posted by: cbreze

Yes, I lost everything, right back to factory settings is where all my f/w upgrades have always taken me. That's pretty much a given. I've never had a problem before tho re-installing them back. I really don't miss bbc as much as I thought I would. I would like to have syncing to my pc back tho. I do thouroughly love this device tho. I'm waiting for my mmc chip to arrive from ebay seller, so I can start loading some more apps. Back to pc suite, I've tried every version I can get my hands on and my 9300 selection is always greyed out as un selectable. it's still a great device tho. You might not want to take the plunge and risk losing it.

Posted by: aktopshooter

is it possible to perform a register like action inorder to memic the internet browser on the updated firmware? Myself as stated before do not wish to lose the sync function. However after experiencing the Treo 750 speed My nokia sits in the drawer. If I could get a little more speed out of it, it would deffently see more sunlight lol. Just a thought; I know its an old unit however I love the format until I can afford the e90

Posted by: e133th4x0r

Yeah, I havent been to these forums for a bit, but I am pretty satisfied with the firmware update. It is a complete loss for me as i cannot get programs on to my phone...unless i am a complete idiot and dont know how to install progs using anything other than pc suite. Is there a way to install the file using the mmc card or somethin? and also what are good wap sites that you guys use to get some other progs from? thanks!

Posted by: e133th4x0r

oh, also i was wondering what program anyone uses to convert video files to run on the realplayer on the 9300. I've been using Roxio to convert some of my files but the viewing size is pretty small once it gets converted and played on my phone. Any ideas/suggestions?

I would use smartmovie, but, like earlier, i cannot get a program to install on my phone without using the pc suite =(

Posted by: aktopshooter

hey you can still load programs to your phone however all has to be done using the mmc card. You have to download the .sis file to your mmc using an memory card reader. I created a file similar to the windows original format my documents and under there I have my downloads which is where I load my sis files. Once you have the .sis files loaded simply just use the the file explorer to navigate to them and click on them and follow the on screen directions

Posted by: e133th4x0r

where would i get .sis files though?
