Suggestions for a phone to use just for making calls needed!!

Ok, first off, I'd like to say hello and I am new to the forums.

I have a V551 now, and I need to get a new phone w/ cingular. I use the bluetooth for file transfer, and occasionally the camera.
Believe it or not, I use my phone mainly for calling people! Haha!

I really like the SYNC (A707) however the cingular store said I need to add a $20 data package to my plan. Which I will NEVER use. I dont need cingular video, any data, internet, AIM, etc. I dont even use text messaging.

It looks like I can buy the phone on cingulars website the cheapest, extending my contract 2 years. I know the A707 is MUCH more phone than I need but I like the screen, the size, the feel in my hand, and the menu layouts.

Here's basically what I need in the phone:
Good reception. (Charlotte, NC area)
Decent battery life (not great, but ok)
Alarm clock
Good loud speaker so I can hear what people are saying to me

Is there any way to disable the cingular video or any of that other stuff so nobody can press the buttons and start charging up all kinds of data charges?

Thanks everyone
-Shawn

I don't think you need the MediaNet package, unless you plan on using it data. I know when I purchased the LG CU500 it was required only for the rebate, but otherwise I didn't need it (and I canceled it when I received my rebate card). You can also have Cingular block access to the data.

Ah yeah, I dont want them to reject the rebate.

I have the NATION 1000 Rollover plan, and I want to keep it, and not add a media package. When I go to checkout at cingular.com it works without adding anything. I wonder if I wont get the rebate then.

Thats good to know that Cingular can block access to data!!

First, for the A707, no data plan is needed for the rebate!

If you upgrade online, they will not make you take a data plan. I started my upgrade online but because of some problems, had to finish in a corporate store. The salesman said they normally make you take a data plan but he wasn't going to make me take it.

I think it is negotiable and not mandatory.

the $20 data plan is only required insofar as it is necessary to get the $50 instant rebate. afaik, it is completely unrelated to the $100 mir.

Thank you for the reply. The guys at the store wouldn't budge. I couldn't believe they would lose a sale on a phone I want becuase I don't use the data. Ugh. I am going to call cingular and see what they offer over the phone too.

I see. I don't think there is even that 50 instant online, just the 100 mir.

They call it an online discount of $50, not an instant rebate. So when I add the phone to my cart it says I pay $149 + $18. Then get a 100 mir.

Ok I just found out by using my old college email address I qualified on Premier.

So I got the A707 for $0.00!! Just the $18 upgrade + tax, so I am getting this phone for under $20, and free shipping!

Corprorate store salesman make almost nothing on these phones (especially the C500 anf 707 for $69). They make it on the service plan and accessories.

Not, almost nothing ... try NOTHING! You could sell phones all day long and not make a buck.
