Samsung SYNC A707 - Can external JAVA apps be copied to the phone and used?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all,

I am considering getting the Samsung SYNC for the HSDPA data and was wondering if anyone has tried copying JAVA applets to the phone and whether they work. It seems like the Samsung Z560 is pretty much the same phone, and I would imagine that any applet that is compatible with that phone would work on the SYNC. However, I'm worried that Cingular has somehow crippled or limited the ability to run JAVA apps that are not bought from Cingular's own Media Mall.

Also, this is probably essentially the same question, but can I buy games from someplace like www.themobilegamer.co.uk that are compatible with the Z560 and sent to my phone and have them work fine?

Thanks for any info!

I already have put at least 10 different Java apps on mine. Opera Mini, mail readers, etc etc.

The annoying thing is that I can't link them to the buttons for reading mail and web browsing, you can only link to built-in apps.

Cingular crippled the Java runtime environment on my ZX20. Java apps that haven't been signed with Cingular's dev kit can't open non-http sockets. The only way I can use the open source midpssh J2ME client is to go through an http proxy. I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same thing to the A707.

If 3G wasn't so new, I would have gone with an unbranded phone. I got a branded one because nobody was selling unbranded 850/1900 HSDPA phones.

Ah, that's good to know. Regarding your annoyance, I assume then that you have to navigate to the app through the UI to run it?

Thanks for the info!

Hmm, that's a shame. I'm with you though, I would gladly shell out the money to buy an unlocked A707 to get the flexibility. I wonder if Samsung has an exclusive agreement with Cingular that will not allow them to sell a version of the A707/Z560 with 850/1900 HSDPA. This North American carrier situation kinda stinks for consumers.

Thanks for the info though

so are you saying that we can install stuff like opera mini and they will have access to the internet and work properly?? i used to have a tmobile branded samsung t809 and it would not allow any access, through tzones or unlimited access. but i now have unlimited medianet with cingular and opera mini works on my nokia. i just wanted to make sure its not crippled on the branded cingular samsungs as well. can anyone definitley say for sure it will work before i get it? thanks.

ok great thanks. and what about google maps too. it should work as well right?

yes google maps works very well.

you guys might want to check out the beta 3 release of mini opera as well. I've run into none of the issue I had with 2.0

Have you guys figured out if you can install new Java apps to the memory card?

on 2.0, using the A707, it would just stop working randomly. i'd have to exit out, and restart it.

loading beta 3 worked like a charm. beta 3 works great on my A707. thanks!

2.0 had several issues for me, although they where while using it with my v3i.

out of memory errors, loss of bookmarks and failing to remember text input method.

I didn't even try 2.0 with the a707, I just went right to beta 3.0

screw opera mini...err i mean, it's primary use has now become transport to http://mycast.orb.com

holy ***t. streaming mp3, photo, video, all from my winxp at home. free. so stoked i got that unlim data plan now. video qual is satisfactory, loadtime is quick, and the stream is pretty consistent (decent fps). i say again, holy ***t.

orb is a "peercast" type program. i.e. load an app onto a winxp machine with inet, let it run in the background, designate shares (folders, files, etc). create user/pass. browse to mycast.orb.com, enter user/pass. select share folder, select file (audio, video, pic, etc). enjoy.

anyone know how to load a .jar file onto the phone with the data cable? i've tried to upload it to the net and having the phone download it, but i think the file may be too large. its just under 5mb

I’m confused. You say you’ve loaded many java apps onto the A707, but everywhere else I look on the internet there are users who can’t get anything to work. Did you do something special that no one else has tried?
