bad x507 or bad service?

I received a Samsung x507 a few weeks ago from Cingular Premier for work - a few other people have the same phone... I've had Kyocera and LG phones from Verizon for about 6 years - and the call quality has always been excellent.

It is impossible for me to go through a call on this Samsung phone with Cingular without asking people to repeat themselves at least three or four times if I'm outside. I was talking to someone else about this and we both talked about how we had to press the phone to our ears with the volume on high to hear if we are standing outside.

Inside the quality is ok - nowhere near what my verizon phone was... but at least I could hear what the people are saying... but there are short cutoffs that are about a half a second long every few minutes...

Do you think that the x507 is just a bad phone - or am I just not used to what seems to be a huge difference in call quality between Verizon and Cingular??

Samsung GSM phones are just terrible when it comes to reception. Terrible. No other way to put it. You may get lucky once in awhile and find one that performs mediocre but I gave up on them after the D807. Its like they know how to put everything in the phone but a decent internal antenna to catch a signal.

Every problem you descibe above is 100% Cingular's fault!
Cingular is supposed to have a quality testing department. I agree that many Cingular branded phones have weak call volumes. They can tell the manufacture to turn the volume up. The gaps, voids and dropout in audio is a major problem with the Cingular network. I have owned almost every brand of phone with Cingular and they all have call quality issues. If I call someone who has T-mobile the call is crisp and clear with NO dropouts. If I call anyone with Cingular the call quality is HORRIBLE
